Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Elle, I would love records and best times, best pace and speed during pool laps, challenges to complete amd compete based in distance just like in running but in swimming pools.

  • @Elle:

Like I said before, it would be great if a swim activity counted as a black block on the Strava mini-calendar at the top of an Athlete's Profile page. Also, it makes no sense for the average pace to count rest time (elapsed time). It should be treated like running/ cycling and show the average pace for "Moving Time". Would be nice to also somehow see drills in the activity summary. Thanks for taking action on gathering this info from us Elle! Really looking forward to seeing these changes to Strava Swimming. Hopefully soon ;)

    - Add monthly challenges.
    - Segments are not overly possible for swimming. Whoever, It would be good to collate a list of Swimming pool locations and the pool lengths that location has. When a pool swim is uploaded it would be good to select the pool. This would be great to compare against other swimmers that use the same pool.
These results could then be additionally filtered by lap time, set distances, stroke type, etc...
I believe this could be achieved in a similar way with shoes in running. Athletes could add their favourite swimming locations to a set list making it easier to select the pool used after uploading.

  • I'd like to see things like longest swim, best efforts for 400 m, 1 k, 5 k etc.

  • My Garmin Swim was uploaded to Strava but I can only view it by clicking on the message icon "Your activity swim is ready."  However, it doesn't appear in the Dashboard activities nor on my profile.  I do not have it set up as private.  Why is it not transferring to the activity list as my Garmin 810 does with cycling?

  • Hello to everyone and to the Strava Team!

I am new to the community, only having posted my training this past week. Kudos to the Strava Team, I love the work that you have done!

As I am training for a triathlon, I too am looking forward to the swim updates. I would like to see swims recognized as a separate sport when viewing Total Activities under the "Last 4 Weeks" section of the athlete profile.

    best,

    Todd

  • What I would like is for Swimming to become first class citizen in Strava, just like Running and Cycling, accross the whole platform, add a special tab for stats like Running and Cycling have, add challenges, basically eveything Running and Cycling have, mentioning n it on your apps, all of it. There's no reason why Swimming should be a second (or third) class citizen as it is now.

  • This has been asked here before but: Please add swimming to the weekly goals/totals?

Also asked but: as it is not possible to manually input laps into the devices available right now please give (maybe a one time to avoid fraud) an edit option for total time and distance covered.

  • SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Err, yes but pointless if it doesn't show up in Activity Feed!

Is there something we are missing because it is only available by clicking on message icon. Does not appear as an activity in Training Log or in the Dashboard anywhere i can see?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • +1 request here for swim data: Strava is a great app and beats all the competition out there hands down at the moment. That said, there is a real opportunity for them to improve the granularity of swim data from Garmin Connect -  (eg. Average speed, lengths, SWOLF score, intervals, calories etc). Would be fantastic if even this basic level of data were made available to Strava members. Clearly this has been a topical issue amongst users for some time, hopefully we wills see something in the works shortly....

  • Chris, I'm not holding my breath on this. It's been like an echo chamber in here with periodic assurances made by Strava but no progress on even the most basic change requests (like reporting distance in meters or yards rather than miles, I mean c'mon what were they thinking in the first place and how hard could it be to change it?)

Right now Strava sucks for swimming which means it's also worthless to triathletes.

Too bad because just a little effort on their part could totally change that.

  • It's nice to see that Strava has added a swim tab and weekly swim goals but it would be great if Garmin Swim is supported and can be seen in the activities feed. Also, it would be very nice to see that on swim days, there's a nice black box on the mini calendar in the athlete's profile section. Swimming should be just as important as running and cycling.

  • We are all missing the point here, we are unwanted guests demanding things in a house that doesn't really want us there. Strava is meant for runners and cyclers alone, not for triathletes, swimmers or any other sport. It is meant only for those two as those are GPS based and can even be tracked with the app alone.
Strava (regardless of what the representatives say) has no desire to support anything else, no need for it as it is content with its runners cyclists user base and they are happy with it too.
We are really outthought get it by now and move on, there are other platforms.
I for one will simply uninstall Strava and forget about it as I'm not a cyclist, I only run and swim so Strava doesn't suit my needs and trying to change it is pointless, is like being in a relationship with someone only to change that person.

  • @Daniel Roa I understand your comment out of frustration, but it really doesn't make sense.

If Strava is not for your needs, then why are you here?

And also, where did you get that Strava is "a house that doesn't really want us there"? If that were true, then why did Elle Anderson, a Strava employee, post in this thread that:

    • "We're in the process of fixing some bugs with Swim activities on Strava, and have other multi-sport and swim features and functionalities planned! We will keep this thread informed. "
    • "Pass along your feedback here, and we'll work it into our ongoing project. "

  • Because planning a feature and actually implementing it are two entirely different things. While the former might give one hope it doesn't help anyone until it actually comes to fruition.

As a programmer, I have some sense of the level of effort some of these mods would require and it is not extensive and some are very trivial yet would result in a significant improvement for the swimming user base.

So, look at the timeline of these requests along with how long it's been since anything has been done and since there's been an update on any progress and you'll get an idea as to why this all seems to be false hope of any improvement to the swim functionality of Strava.

  • @Rodrigo V. this thread is over three years old. Three years, Carl! I mean, Rodrigo. It took Strava two years to add the Garmin Swim support Tom Smudlers asked for — but you did it and people immediately thought like "Yes! Strava's going to become my one-stop sports tracker now!" Well, looks like putting that sync to a good use will take two years more =) Does anyone in Strava team even swim with a tracker, heh?

  • The negativity here is so silly. It's not just about the programming it takes, these things don't happen overnight (obviously) - there's always a whole other insane and intricate world behind the curtain, especially with company's as big as Strava is now.

Yes they started out as a bike/run gps site but they wouldn't have over TWENTY-FIVE extra activities besides biking and running if they weren't planning on absorbing every area of fitness.

I mean what the hell kind of business plan is it when you stop at just biking and running? It's pretty clear that Strava is up to much bigger things and plans to be the facebook of fitness, which it pretty much already is. All in good time!

  • Swim heart rate data and calories burned are readily available on my Garmin Connect uploads but Strava does not display the information.

Same goes for weight lifting, indoor running, indoor cycling, pretty much anything besides running or cycling.

I'm using Strava to track my workouts, but what's the point if the only thing it will display is the amount of time I worked out!

definitely not paying for premium service again unless these sensible features are implemented.

  • Support for Fenix2 would be awesome.

Swimming used to work well with my Garmin Swim, but with the Fenix it is buggy. It shows total distance, but the time of the first interval only and no laps.

If you upload a TCX it shows elapsed time as total time, and the intervals are way, way off.

Training peaks, sporttracks both read the files which auto sync from garmin connect fine.

  • How does Strava get the Swim data from a Garmin Swim watch?

    0
    评论操作 固定链接
  • My list of swim feature requests:

    • PR for swims (Fastest Length/Fastest 100m/Farthest Swim would be a great start)
    • When the Garmin Swim uploads workouts, Strava creates a Lap for each set (or "Interval" as Garmin would call it). This means one is unable to see more granularly what ones fastest length is, or how one slowed down over time. Surely there are better ways to depict this data?
    • Ability to edit swimming after uploading - eg, if I accidentally recorded 1 length after swimming 2 actual lengths then I'd like to add a new "Lap" (which is what the file calls this) and modify times accordingly. This is quite a common problem since many sports watches make mistakes.
    • The graph of distance on the Athlete page are sometimes scaled strangely, eg the graph could be out of 6km where the max the user has done in a day is 2km, so there is all this space that's not being used.
    • Another issue with the graphs is the inability to split them into Cycle/Run/Swim. Obviously one typically cycles further than one swims, so this can skew the information.
    • Challenges for swims, eg "Longest Distance in April". I'm not sure one could validate these though.

I'm happy to answer any questions about any of the above points. I hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Given the age of this topic and the lack of effort over the 4 years on Strava's part, it should be clear to everyone by now that if swimming data is _really_ important to you, you should be using a service like Training Peaks and giving up on Strava.

  • I'd  like to say thanks for recently fixing the issue of average pace for swims.. I no longer need to be embarrassed by swims that look much slower than they actually were! It works great now

  • @David Gunter - Agree. I loved a lot of the cycling and running features but as a triathlete swimming is 33% as important. I did not renew my Premium this year and moved over to TP.
