Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Happy to have support for 910xt swim data.  But when hand entering swim data please add a drop-down box to allow us to specify the units.  Who keeps track of their swims in miles, except maybe Diana Nyad?  We swimmers count laps, which are either yards or meters.   I have to get out a calculator every time I enter a swim, which is a pain in the neck.  This should be so easy to add that someone can do it before their first cup of coffee.  I'll buy them that cup of coffee!

  • Hello Strave,

Please improve  the swimming function in your app!

Do not forget: If you ignore your customer, they will go to a competitor. Happens to AOL, Nokia, Yahoo just to name some!

And not even responding here is so poor! Really a shame and just shows some kind of arrogance...

  • Hi Kapudan

I've had direct contact with Strava recently over this issue.  I have to say they're customer support was excellent and they were keen to find out what it was they could do to improve the Strava experience for swimmers.  I am left confident that they are working hard to do just that.  So whilst they may not be responding here, they are responsive.  I'm sure they'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

    All the best

    Mark

  • I had sent the following to Strava.  They told me to post it here.

Garmin 910XT support laps and stroke identification for swimming, as well as stroke count and other metrics.

Please at least include the laps within the activity view so that if we've lapped the timer, it shows.
    Example: http://app.strava.com/activities/108925585
    It's a 2000yd swim (yeah, I know Garmin added an extra 25yd).
However, the workout was 100yd breast - 100yd free... repeated 20 times. So the workout itself contains 20-21 laps within the file.
Please make it so that these appear in the workout information. All the better if you can parse some of the other content and incorporate it!

  • I have a Garmin Swim, the upload works but the data supplied is virtually useless compared to Garmin Connect. Strava would be the perfect product if this was improved. Interval data/time is terrible in comparison. Please improve it if you can! Thanks.

  • Please can you add average speed to the activities list for swim activities, it would be a useful addition for cycling and running too.

  • I Wrote to Strava (Feb11) to try and get some feed back. My post was as follows

"A lot of frustration is starting to develop in the Swim data request thread on the support forum due to the lack of strava support, development and feedback. (link to this thread)
It was great in the beginning last year when Elle (Strava Support) was providing feed back and assisted in the development to upload directly from the Garmin devices. Since April 2013 we have no longer heard any feedback nor seen any improvements for the swim functionality. Could we please get some feedback from Strava.

I have also attached a screen grab and highlighted ideas that many users would like to see.

    Thanks for the support,
    Tim Rowe"

    "Hello-

Sorry for the delay. We're aware that the Swim experience could definitely use some love - and we're hoping to improve it in the future. However, I don't have any specifics that I could give you at this point; please bear with us and hopefully we can improve this experience soon.

    Thanks for your patience.

  • Forgot to include my attatchment, I don't know if it will work but I attached it to this comment. Its a screen capture from my profile with some Microsoft paint edits to highlight areas needing improvement.

  • Tim, what you provided is clearly what we (triathletes) want to see in a near version of Strava :o)

It's not a complex functionality to implement, but It seems like a business model problem or strategic thinkings on their side...

  • Perhaps Strava may consider adding a monthly challenge for swimming, as they do for running and cycling.

That way embarrassment may force Strava into action on this!

I am not a swimmer but have been waiting for this feature since Dec 2012!

  • Tim, +1

I've started running and will add swimming and cycling soon. So I fill frustrated without having swim data in the Activity Summary...

  • Looks like swimming stats have been improved - now shows a better pace graph and laps (I'm pretty sure these weren't there before). But...

This is still nowhere near as good as all the stuff you get from a 910XT on Garmin connect - the swim stats on there are very extensive. Strava can definitely learn a few things from there.

However, one very quick and useful "fix" would be to add swimming as an Activity Type on an athlete's profile. Right now it just has Cycling and Running Activity Types.

Would be great to have Swimming added to Weekly Progress goals too.

Both of these are surely simple quick fixes that give useful visibility to all our hard swimming efforts. And for us triathletes on here would be great to have.

    THANKS! Paul

  • Hi Elle,

I must say that the swim data is not showing laps. It is only showing intervals (recognizes where you have paused your device (stop/start). I use a Garmin Swim which contains lap information and this is not being shown on Strava.

As all the triathletes out there, would be great to have:

    - Swim stats in your profile just like running and cycling

    - laps

    - Stroke rate

    - a Swim icon that it is not a bullet point :)

Looking forward to those improvements. It's been a long wait. Would be great to know if there are more features being worked on right now or it is a maybe -future" chance.

    Thanks!

  • +1 for adding more detailed swim data.

I like that I can now upload my swim data from my 910xt to strava however it only shows the most basic information.

I'd like to see more data like efficiency, swolf, avg strokes etc

  • Please add the ability to enter swim distance in yards or meters.  Most pool workouts will be in those formats, not miles or kilometers.  Thank you.

  • @Sandee McKinney - try changing the activity type either first.  or change it away then change it back after you save.  All of my swims show in yards once they are assigned as "Swims" for the activity.  It then also calculates your average 100yd (or 100m) pace.

... though Strava still doesn't recognize when the laps within the file.

  • Strava's support for Swimming is virtually non-existent. I recommend using using trainingpeaks.com or connect.garmin.com - they have been supporting this much better and for longer while Strava seems to have no plans to improve things.

I've spent the better portion of the evening trying to get my swim data to import. My watch records laps as well as my heart rate throughout the swim - this is difficult to enter manually and is part of the TCX data. I know the total distance yet there is no way to input this info into the swim after the TCX file is uploaded.

    Useless.

  • Hi Strava,

This thread was started Oct 2012.  It is now Apr 2014.

There are a lot of great suggestions here which have zero feedback or action.  This is frustrating and disappointing as Strava is great for cycling and running.  I'm sure you could do better and do it a little more quickly.

  • Elle

When you say you hope to " chip away at some more improvements soon", are you able to offer anything more specific? e.g. suggest a feature that might be delivered by a certain date?  Strava is fantastic for cycling (particularly since so much is free) but the pace of progress on swimming is not great at all and there seems to be no published "plan"? If you offered better compatibility with swim watches and rich data, I'd definitely sign up for premium

Would be good to know when you expect the next improvement to be made?

Thanks again for a great site

  • Hi Strava,

i recently uploaded some swim data to my account to check if there is any useful progress.  Unfortunately I don't see any improvements for swimming! All the things the people wrote above this post are completely valid and shows a great demand for supporting swimming in Strava.

Here are some suggestions from my side!

    • Rethink your premium membership and offer some kind of packaging. So people can choose and buy the functions the need.
    • Discuss with your CEO etc what Strava wants to be in the future! How to compete with others in the market of self tracking.
    • Promote swimming to the third official supported page!
    • Create swimming as a premium package so people who wants these feature can buy it and support you!
    • Just create an account in Garmin Connect and check the data they are providing! Think about it and start to implement it on your swim activity detail page.
    • Add your Challenges for swimming (outdoor/indoor)
    • Add your Segments for outdoor swimming! (Gosh, crazy people swimming segments in shark infested regions :P)
    • Create some additional UI-Elements for Swimming! (Icons, Update Summary Pages etc)
    • Fix the Android/iPhone Apps to reflect these changes!

I know, that plenty of people use the free version (including me) and i should not demand stuff when I am not paying for! But honestly, plenty of premium features i just don't need! And the stuff i would like to use (eg swimming) and pay for is not available!

    Kind regards

  • Edmundo - I have no such issues.  As soon as the ANT+ agent is finished copying from my Garmin to my local machine, Strava can see it.  Please know that Strava (or any other website for that matter) does actually "see" your device... they "see" the activities folder your device has created under your app data on your computer.  As an example, on mine what it actually sees is whatever exists under C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Devices\{device id}\Activities
