Direct Messages on Strava

I think that Strava needs more social function in its system in order to increase its attractivity and its expansion.

Some of my suggestions are :

1. A personal message system

2. An event scheduler which permits athletes to plan a group event

I think both features would help to develop the commuity

  • Hello Strava,

I was involved in managing the aftermath of a nasty crash on the weekend.

I did not want to broadcast to the world about what happened but needed to contact some involved (in private). I did not have the email address or phone contact details of all involved, so ended up writing in "code" on some of the rides.

A PM system would have made this contact straight forward and efficient.

    Such a valuable tool.

  • Yep, PM is needed.  There are folks I only know thru Strava and need better ways to communicate than using comments, at least till I get to know them better.  Although, since many of us are on Strava so often, especially after epic group rides, then PM would still be the most convenient avenue.  keep up the good work!

  • A message system is essential nowadays. Obviously the obligatory PM system. An "open to all followers" message system whereby you could post a message saying, for example "going for a ride tomorrow 8am, anyone interested?" and it pops up on the dashboard of all those following you with a facility to reply, etc. Another possibility is - without wanting to copy the likes of facebook too much - a sharing facility where you could post a message that your followers are able to "share" and their followers etc etc. first thought that comes to mind is for stolen bikes being spotted amongst the strava community. Could also be used for promoting local events and things...

  • You have to be careful about what type of information you post online and it's already borderline posting GPS info with times and places you often ride to/from, especially for those who don't set up a privacy zone and allow everyone to see their activities, but also forcing users to post email addresses and phone numbers in publicly visible comments? I can see wanting to keep people posting public comments to encourage activity and foster a sense of community but not allowing for a way to contact others directly is a pretty big privacy concern.

    Suggestions:

    - Optimal. Implement a private messaging system similar to every forum software package out there. Offer options to allow messages from administrators only, all members, members following you or in the same club, only messages from club admins, or disable receipt of all PMs.

    - Workable. A contact web form on your profile page that sends messages from other users to your email. Offer ability to allow from all members, allow from followers only, allow from followers and members in the same clubs, or disable/do not allow.

    - Bare minimum. Ability to display or access contact information for a user in a manner not visible to search engines/web crawlers (e.g. pop-up display on profile page showing contact info and requires a user to be logged in to access). Offer ability to share information to all members, share with followers/club members, or disable/do not share.

  • Private message system is essential - I am surprised it hasn't been done already!

  • This needs to exist.

  • It turns out that the people I'm in contact with on Strava is people that I don't have in other Social Networks, so my other options to send messages to them are limited. Now, this is handled by either commenting on random activity they have, or giving out a phone number and using SMS. A private messaging system is really lacking, just for the kind of "Send me a note when you are going out riding, and I might tag along!" kind of messages. It really doesn't have to be something fancy.

  • An easy solution would we a button "contact by email" available for people you follow.

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks for the continued discussion and suggestions about a private messaging system. We're always trying to improve the ability for our athletes to network and stay motivated, and I think this is a great idea.

To this end, did you notice the new Group Event RSVP system that was recently rolled out? It's a neat way for clubs to create events, and it allows everyone in the club to know who's planning on coming ahead of time. Let us know what you think!

  • That met about half the requirements listed on the page - those around arranging group rides. So far it doesn't address any of the requirements around contacting individuals. There are tons of good ideas in this thread, and great reasons for implementing them. I've heard Strava called 'Facebook for athletes', but it isn't there yet.

  • +1 to original concept and expansions noted above. Both the PM and Ride Calendar features are vital to the continued growth of the Strava experience. As it is many of my riding buddies on Strava have to resort to a hodgepodge of approaches to invite people out to ride. Some use a group text, group emails, email list, and / or FB calendar invite oh and I forgot the Team Cowboy application. (Hey that works pretty well so Strava admins check that out or integrate the FB calendar system although that will limit the invite to people who are on both Strava and FB.)

You really need a 'native' PM feature.

  • Private messaging - surely a must!

  • Laurent, the Group Event RSVP System is a way for Strava Clubs/Shops to organize and promote community-based events like shop rides. To access this feature, go to a Club/Shop page, then click the Orange "Add Group Event" button and you'll be prompted to enter information about the event.

Justin, we've received a lot of feedback to expand Strava's social media features, and the Product Team is looking closely at all options. The challenge is creating new features that fall directly inline with Strava's core mission to motivate people to get out and ride or run. I think a private messaging system is a great idea, and the support for this feature certainly hasn't fallen on deaf ears on this end.

Thanks everyone for your support and discussion on this issue!

  • Yes definitely, PM system and schedule for group rides and events for clubs and social groups, friends and the like would be an excellent feature. Would probably convince me to renew my subscription next year again!!

    Thanks Strava.

  • It's rather mind boggling that after a year and a half that there isn't a PM system yet. That's a pretty basic feature to be omitting.

  • Here is a perfect example of the frustration no messaging can have:  Travel to an unknown area for work, vaction, whatever and seeing a lot of riders in the area you are going and not being able to contact anyone for potential rides.  It is unbelieveable a social riders site like Strava has no messaging for riders to contact one another.

  • A private message system would be awesome! My buddies and I currently plan rides using previous ride comments, which is awkward (but still a little better than trying to organize everyone under another social media platform).

  • I was shocked when I found out this didn't already exist and I had to go and find a ride the person I was trying to contact was on and comment on their ride.

  • Another vote for a PM system here!

I had a nice chat with another commuter yesterday.  We're now following each other on here, and I was going to ping him a message to see if he fancied an MTB outing, but will have to do that on an existing ride of his, which feels a bit strange and stalkerish!

  • It's been almost 2 years since this suggestion was posted and it evidently has a lot of support. I'd like to think Strava are listening and are in the process of implementing this now.
