Direct Messages on Strava

I think that Strava needs more social function in its system in order to increase its attractivity and its expansion.

Some of my suggestions are :

1. A personal message system

2. An event scheduler which permits athletes to plan a group event

I think both features would help to develop the commuity

  • Please can we get direct message feature going soon, mention in comments is cool but I don't want to be sharing my personal contact details publicly and also don't want to search on social media for a person, would just like to message them directly on Strava as it will be convenient.

  • +1 for PM.  Its maddeningly hard to reach out to like minded people right now...

  • Yes. Please. Private messaging. And @mentions on the website as well.

  • I too would like the message system.  If somebody I follow has not been out for a while, being able to message them to encourage them to come out for a ride would be useful.

  • One of the main uses of Strava is the community and social aspect yet a fundamental means of communication such as private messaging is missing! How Strava has not yet implemented this is an increase shock and disappointment.

As mentioned by many others, this really should be an essential feature and the comments section on rides isn't suitable for ongoing communication. Its also currently impossible to pass personal contact information without anyone who follows or in groups is able to see. Ironically, if Strava had a private messaging feature you wouldn't have to send this information!

  • agree w Brian ... I moved to a new area and I'm trying to meet runners who run a similar pace and routes, but don't want to give my cell or email to everyone.   PM please ...

  • Why is Strava taking so long like (a year) to resolve this issue? Till date we are unable to private message even though we are premium members. Quick quick, you guys (strava) need to move uour asses!!!

  • Any updates on this feature? Sure would be great to contact some for ride? I have a small group that uses another messenger, but Strava needs to implement this already...

  • Thank you Todd. As someone directly involved in Bereda's functionality and growth, I was very pleased to see you mention Bereda as a powerful tool for you and your training goals. If you have any questions feel free to reach out. tyler(at)beredatraining.com

  • This is the primary reason I have used Strava less and less, and it seems many of my strava friends are doing the same. The thing that differentiate Strava from a regular training log is the social aspect, and then they seems to have taken a hard stand against letting users interact directly. Preventing people to interact on a social platform is kind of a strange decision. If I need a training log only, I'll use the one that comes with my sports watch.

I saw the link about www.beredatraining.com , which seems to be all about communication. I hope it is not only focused on progress and coaching , but also about letting friends communicate and plan rides just for fun. People like me that are over 45 don't necessary strive to improve above a certain level, I just like to stay in shape and have fun.

Come on, Strava! Time to provide private messaging capability.

  • Yeah, PM seems like a highly desirable (and common sense) feature.  I just connected with a local rider who's interested in similar rides to me, and I have no way to privately share my contact information with them.  If for whatever reason that's too hard to implement, a simple "share contact info" option would suffice.  It seems like that is what a lot of the comments here are trying to accomplish.

  • It's been almost 7 years in total chief (december 2012).  I'm kinda thinking the PM system is not going to ever happen.  Shame on you Strava for not listening to your users.  But, keep adding useless things in.

  • This is the reason I have not renewed membership.

Complacency to the 9th degree, not even a comment to the discussion !

ignore paying customers at your peril !

All those 2 cents must have amounted to some-thing by now ?

  • Adding my name to the list of those requesting PM capability to Strava.

Sometimes, you need to ask a rider friend for email but doesn't want the email to be seen by everyone.

  • David Silcox, having a PM system would be nothing at all like twitter social media, they could easily switch it off by default so people don't get spammed. Pros would obviously get spammed, so having safeguards in place would be important, but at the same time there should be some sort of options for communication for those who want it.

  • I’ve been following this thread for six years.

My views of how the PM feature should work remain the same as articulated in my 18 January 2014 comment in this thread.

Glad to hear things are starting to get moving!

  • What would you say if Strava rolled out the messaging function but made it available only to SUMMIT members?  What if Strava actually lowered the cost of SUMMIT by 30% to encourage growth of the platform and the use of messaging?  How would you react if as a condition lowering the cost of SUMMIT by 30% and making messaging available only to SUMMIT members you had to authorize Strava to allow targeted advertising (which of course would be according to your search history).

  • Ideally, it would not be limited to Summit only. As a paying customer I'm opposed to ad placement.
