Add support for ANT+ with Strava Android App

Has anyone tried using an ANT USB adaptor (such as the one Garmin sells) to receive ANT sensors on an Android phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean (4.2). It seems that if I install the ANT Radio Service and the ANT USB Service (both free from the Google Play store) I might be able to get ANT to work with my phone and hopefully the Strava app.  The description for the ANT Radio Service app lists compatible apps but Strava is not listed

  • This is just sad. Strava will no longer be my go-to app. IPBike, Endo and Garmin FTW!

  • I can't believe Strava haven't fixed this yet. I bougth myself an ANT+ android phone and didn't even check if Strava supported it, cause it was so obvious it should. And guess what? Strava made me a Endomundo user.

I basically can't believe the answer Mat Gordon (Strava) gave Sigmund Ås Feb 13 (see earlier comment). You've been hot for a while Strava. Don't blow it.

  • What's worse is Strava has supported ANT+ on iPhone for over a year now. iPhone doesn't natively support ANT+ you have to use the Wahoo dongle. At the same time a handful of Android phones natively supported ANT+ and all new phones supported ANT+ through an OTG USB cable. They've had plenty of time to implement this feature. Just an other example of Strava treating Android users as second class citizens. By the way, IpBike will also have Bluetooth LE very soon. it's currently in public beta testing. IpBike is created by a single person. Why is it that a larger organization like Strava can't keep up? Heck, IpBike will even use my phone's (GS3) barometric sensor for elevation! Maybe Strava needs to give Ifor Powell a crap load of cash to recode the guts of their app for them.

  • @Derek, Wahoo is exclusively iPhone oriented, so no surprise, this aligns perfectly with the iPhone focus at Strava. Do not expect anything anytime soon from Strava to benefit Android users. ANT+ is not on their roadmap for Android, and it doesn't seem that they have any intention of providing the same level of performance and support for Android users.

  • Like so many companies out there, Strava is about to find out why backing Apple doesn't pay in the long run. They've had more than 2 years to see that Android was taking over just as Windows did with the Mac. All these companies who thought they were going to ride Apple's coat-tails into the sunset are in for a rude awakening if they aren't supporting Android equally (or first).

  • I'm very sad to ear that... Ant+ was one of the pros to make me buy Strava Premium... I think I'lll revert to ipbike...

  • Oh! But now they are "more social", you can share pictures, and they have real-time voice updates! Does Strava think they're Apple?! Nobody cares about 2-year old features, especially when core functionality (accessory support) is virtually non-existent. Strava, what are you guys thinking? Clearly not about getting a loyal user base made up of real athletes.

  • Bummer, my VDO computer for running/biking finally died, so I started researching new fitness computers -  having a hard time stomaching $300+ (one for each the hubby and myself) for a decent model and really not wanting to buy more gadgets when cell phones are mini computers that records/stores all sorts of info in one place. I learned a lot in 60 minutes, like that my phone (Samsung Galaxy 4 4.3 Jelly Bean) is ANT+ capable and that there are many other apps, (like Garmin) that support ANT+ with my phone...   After reading Strava's info to see how/if I could get my current HRM strap work with my phone and its apps and learned I could not, BUT could buy an unreliable Bluetooth device from only one supported manufacturer for $80 on Amazon.com on top of the $59/subscription/person. What I hope Strava learned was they just voluntarily lost TWO new yearly subscriptions (one for myself and one for the hubby) just because they will not support ANT+ for Android.  I guess you lose out when you only tie yourself into one brand.  Bad business if you ask me and to think I LOVE Strava.  Boo on you Strava :(

  • This is the reason I don't have a premium membership, as I do not see the benefit if i have to use a different app to connect to my Heart Rate Monitor & Cadence Sensor. Google My Tracks does and i can then export the route to any site. This is disappointing Strava as ta the moment 38 Android devises have ANT+ built in, currently 60 million handsets according to thisisant.com

  • Strava, what are you guys waiting for? Please add ANT+ support already! This is the only thing stopping me from going premium and I really would like that.

  • I wonder if Strava continues to drag it's feet on connectivity like Ant+ if it will go the way of MySpace?

    I guess time will tell.

  • I'm new to Strava, been trialling the Premium membership but as an android user disappointed at the lack of Ant+ support. Will likely move to Endomondo after all :(

  • Strava, please quit working on BTLE, the general hardware support is not there yet. ANT+ will get you immediate financial rewards while BTLE will get you support headaches and pain. In a year, or two, add BTLE, but for now go with ANT+.  You have a better chance of convincing existing owners of various ANT+ equipment to stick with or switch to Strava by embracing the existing standards. BTLE is great, but the hardware and software are still maturing and won't be mainstream for at least a year.

  • Forget about Strava's Android app. Get IpBike. It will upload to Strava most excellently. IpBike supports ANT+ and BTLE. Even if Strava finally goes out and hires some developers with the right skills, the problem is that ANT+ isn't on their "map" and they don't give a rats rear end about giving their Android users what they really need and want. Just install IpBike and be happy with an excellent app that does all the things you need. All Strava really cares about are iPhones anyway. I get the impression that Android is more an irritation to them than anything else.

  • I already use Google Tracks and Endomondo. IpBike is fine too. Too bad https://tapiriik.com/ doesn't support those, since I'm not a user of trainingpeaks, runkeeper or sporttracks.

I was hoping to keep things very civil (and naive) but it is somewhat apparent that Strava is being politically cagey with their app. I suspect they were hoping to drive revenue to themselves with BLE products, hoping to cut out Garmin and Polar. Then they didn't get their product to market quickly enough and the dual-use BLE/ant+ products are coming out already along with the real-time uploading Garmin 510/810/1000. Now they seem to be suffering from the sunk-costs fallacy.  The existing BLE labs app has tons of problems still. They need to go ahead and switch to supporting ant+ immediately, and then add BLE when it is easier and the technology catches up.

  • Stan Muse: THanks for bringing that up. I'm actually a paid user of IpBike and didn't realize they do that. I haven't tried but I suspect IpBike (and IpSensorMan) could be used fairly appropriately for running to. If so, this is an interesting idea but then again Endomondo works well and has a MUCH more finished UI than IpBike (that and the way they handle BT are my only complaints).

Strava appears to be going the way of so many other dodo-bird companies that can't help but make themselves extinct (at least compared to what they should be) because they fail to accept that the market demands what it wants and won't be ignored. Given the number of people commenting here, any idiot could see that Strava is seriously failing in this respect, but then again, they only provide 3rd party logs through FaceBook (ignoring Google) which tells me that the willfull ignorance goes deep through the whole company. What's more sad is that companies like this (The "Apple types") are so dead-set on doing things their way (rather than the smart way, which makes more money), that they ruin their own chances to thrive. Too bad too since they had one hell of a lead and a decent service in general.

  • I'miss cancelling my premium subscription due to this.
Just got a Samsung s5. Really happy to see it has ant+ built in. Great I thought I can start using my Garmon heart strap with strava. Stupid you're not even considering ant+.
Hope the money zephyr are paying you is enough to make up for annoying loyal users by not adding support for the most used protocol.

  • 1+ for ANT+! Sportstracklive has it, for all ANT+ applications (HR, power, cadence) and it's great.

  • Yeah, premium only seems fine to me. It is only usable if you've spent money on ANT+ devices so you're semi-committed to sport tracking already.  There are free apps to verify that the ANT+ devices are working.

  • Just like to add my support, with the Samsung S5 now with Ant+ built in, are we getting any closer to the required critical mass to get this on the Strava roadmap? Fair play and well done on the progress made with BLE. Many thanks Mark

  • Hey Strava, BLE is not the way to go. We need ANT+. There are many that have power meters and etc that are ANT+ devices. BLE devices are not reliable and cost more that ANT+ since there are more ANT+ devices. Just look at http://www.thisisant.com/
