Add support for ANT+ with Strava Android App

Has anyone tried using an ANT USB adaptor (such as the one Garmin sells) to receive ANT sensors on an Android phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean (4.2). It seems that if I install the ANT Radio Service and the ANT USB Service (both free from the Google Play store) I might be able to get ANT to work with my phone and hopefully the Strava app.  The description for the ANT Radio Service app lists compatible apps but Strava is not listed

  • Well, I must say I was a bit surprised when my new phone came with ANT+ and Strava doesn't support it. Time to review the roadmap. Maybe where you exepcted to go 2 years ago isn;t where you should be going now. Blind loyalty to old plans ans ignoring now information is the kind of thing that helps organizations get to obsolete really really fast.

  • Have just purchased a Sony Xperia wtih Ant+ capability. I thought this might expand my options as I look for a new computer (with speed/ cadence sensor) for my bike to link with my Strava. I guess I'll need to go Bluetooth if I want to link in.

In your post of 15 October 2014 Elle Anderson you mentioned it wasn't a big project but needed prioritisation. I would think opening up the capability of the app rather than limiting it would be a priority. I along with everyone else here (plus I am sure many others) would like to see Ant+ as an option on Strava. When you have Cateye and other manufacturer using Ant+ rather than Bluetooth then it would make sense to include them as part of the user groups possible to use Strava.

  • That's very frustrating but sounds typical for an Android / Java developer - if it's outside their sphere of knowledge they're not interested. Bluetooth support is there. If the correct design patterns had been adopted (say, bridge for example) it would be as simple as adding an extra implementation for connecting to ANT devices as well as bluetooth. Or is it a vendor lock-in issue?

The "answer" is very frustrating though. Makes me happy not to be a premium user.

  • Who does support Ant+ that is Strava like, might look at switching. Probably also useful for anyone doing a Google search, so they too know who to switch to.

It doesn't take too much to be replaced, just ask the guys are MySpace

  • Ok, given it more thought. Firstly, the iPhone app supports ANT+ so (I think) it cannot be a business issue related to some confounded loyalty with bluetooth, devs must have simply chosen it because it's easy. It's part of the core systems, so no hassle. However with ANT+ there is a dependency on the ANT+ library but this can be obtained easily anyway.

So really from a business point of view if you are trying to make money from this app by getting people onto premium services then it would be very important that power meter support would be included, to some anyway, especially to the cashed up folk with power meters.

So, I did a quick tally thanks to the Internet, on the available power meter brands that support the different technologies.

Power Meter brands that support ANT+ (courtesy of http://www.thisisant.com/directory/)

    Factor
    Garmin
    Pioneer
    PowerTap / CycleOps
    Quarq
    ROTOR Bike Component...
    Saxonar power2max
    SRAM
    SRM
    Stages Cycling
    Verve Cycling

Power meter brands that support BTLE/BLE (courtesy of http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/09/buyers-guide2014-edition.html)

    Stages
    PowerTap
    Polar/Look

So, 11 power meter brands choose ANT+ over bluetooth, including newcomers such as pioneer and factor, and the very well established players like SRM and SRAM/Quarq.  Then in the bluetooth court there's only 3, PowerTap probably being the most established, with Stages and Polar/Look having niche markets, more or less.

I would suggest maybe having business look over those figures and then put them onto the dev team. Hell, if you total up the number of posts here and then multiply that by $50 you might even make a profit from the change.

  • I have just cancelled my Premium subscription with the following reason given:

I am protesting your lack of support for ANT+ on Android.
    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/22821681
Elle Anderson "There are no plans to pursue ANT+ in the future for our mobile (Android) app."

I hope other can leave a similar message if you decide to leave. This may give them some idea of revenue they are loosing. (Although I think the real figure would be much higher!)

  • C'mon Strava, don't let your lazy developers dictate your business, limiting your apps capabilities is also limiting your profits and evolution. Ant+ is going to get more and more popular, and will likely surpass bluetooth for these types of fitness applications. so be proactive and give the people and more so your patrons what they want, we're obviously asking for it so we don't have to leave, if that doesn't show loyalty then i don't know what does, and the fact you won't put ANT+ in your app realy makes you look like you don't care about your customers needs.  Which is why everyone is now looking elsewhere. Ant+ is better than BLE in so many ways, but most importantly, it uses between 25% and 50% less power than bluetooth which is a resource hog and a battery killer.

  • And for what it's worth, contrary to Stava's claim, there are now 64 devices just between Sony Motorola and Samasung alone that use ANT+, and ANT+ is in ALL of these manufacturers flagship devices too btw. So lets get proactive Strava developers, lets get on with it, ANT+ is here to stay and better than your beloved BLE...

if you don't belive me about these manuafacturers using ANT+, then plese check out this list..
    http://www.thisisant.com/directory/filter/2316/~/~/
    (you can filter by brand/manufacturer)

Keep downplaying your customers needs and we'll all go away eventually.

  • Throwing in my tuppence as well.  Just bought an industry standard Garmin ANT+ HRM that also works with my industry standard ANT+ cycle computer (non-GPS) and expected it to work since the iOS app supports ANT+ via a dongle.  Really disappointed given the great new features coming out around HR in Strava.  Please de-prio the new HR-dependent features and prioritize data capture first!  I'm hoping to hear a prioritized target date by EoY or I may start taking my premium membership and looking at some of the other competing apps.

  • And here's a message from ANT+ to developers (taken from the google play website)

"Attention Developers! Using the ANT+ plugins in your app to communicate with ANT+ devices is quick, easy, and free and uses a simplified API that doesn't require referencing technical documents or learning new protocols. Visit the ANT Android Developer page http://www.thisisant.com/developer/ant/ant-in-android/ for more info and to download the SDK containing the source code for this open source application."

So whats the hold up?? lets go!! it's FREE, unlike Bluetooth... so there is no reason not to include other than you just don't feel like it. :P

  • Just upgraded my tech to engage in the Premium features. Now I realise Strava doesn't support the most common and free protocol. Hence the demand for ANT+ lasts for years I'll consider alternatives.

  • The reason I bought Garmin premium HRM was because it shown in Strava's shop page, so I thought it would work, I missed their statement about "ANT+ not supported on Strava's android app..."

  • Yep, I upgraded to Premium about 6 months ago and have been waiting for the ANT+ support on Android since then.  I have no other use for the Premium service.  I've submitted an update request - if there is no specific date now then I will downgrade to the free Strava and wait it out.

  • If you want to fully use the ANT + technology on Android, settle Ipbike on your mobile.
Set it and then automatically loads the data of the ride on Strava.
Until Strava not support ANT +.

  • Add me to the upset premium Strava subscribers who is upset with your company's decision to not support ANT+ for Android. Get it together, ANT+ is a very common protocol.

  • My Samsung Galaxy S5 handles ANT+ just fine with no extra dongles - just not in Strava.  I'm a premium member and hate to switch but MapMyRide synchs right up with my Garmin ANT+ HRM and Strava does not.  This means there's a whole separate GPS device I do not need to carry with my on my rides any more.
Please Strava, add in support for ANT+ - quick!!

Along with the HRM I'd love to see support for other ANT+ devices such as temperature and cadence sensors.

  • Add me to the list of people asking for Ant+ support in the Android app. I just signed up for Strava premium, but will very likely cancel my subscription if the Ant+ deficiency isn't addressed.

  • I asked Strata for an update and have just been informed by Support: "Sorry we have no plans to add ANT+ support for the Android Strava App.". I still love the App but see no benefit to maintaining the Premium service now. How do I cancel it?

  • There really is no reason anymore for Strava to purposely omit ANT+,  it's free, has no licensing fee's like Bluetooth does, and can be easily implemented, so it really makes no sense. Considering that there are so many people asking for it in this forum means there are many, many more who feel the same way. It just doesn't make any sense anymore, it just seems lazy in some ways. The won't even offer us a good reason why they choose not to, its almost like they are telling us that they don't want our business, as they surely are aware that there are many services that have ANT+ support and offer the same service Strava does...

as they say in Marketing, ignore your customers needs and patronage and they'll go away.

  • Somewhere along the line someone high up in the organization made a decision.  They are high enough in the organization that no one dares tell them it was the wrong decision and so it stands.  This is the kind of thinking that tends to sink IT projects.  The VP of Product Development (or whatever fool made this decision) has it in his or her head that Ant+ is dying and that BTLE is the future. They are wrong but until someone can talk some sense into them, things won't change. In the meantime, customers are either canceling their subscriptions or deciding not to subscribe to premium.  If it were not for the social networking aspect, I'd have dropped them altogether, and until they reverse course on this, they get not one red cent from me.

  • The social networking feature, or more precisely the ubiquitous adoption of it by most of my cycling buddies, is why I'm stuck with Strava.

  • Luckily mapmyride.com and mygarmin.com have the same or better features so as long as there is no ant+ support, there will be no premium upgrades on my Strava account, the free version will do until then.

  • no ANT+ support by anyway? bad... bad... baaaaaad... I've got a HRM and a Cadence sensor form ebay just at a 54€ and it seems not too much releated the quality (quite impressive!)

With endomondo i've got to search and pair once.... With Google MyTracks got to do ... ehm... NOTHING :D and they works like a charm!

Whit Strava what to do? Ah, yes: sleep and dream .... "Dream my friend and you will see... the dream is my reality... (Cit. Metallica, Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"

  • +1 for ant+ support. Would rather not buy a Garmon or Suunto when I already have an ant enabled phone. Duh. Still have $2k "invested" in ant+ power meters so won't be switching to Be anytime soon.

  • I bought a Stages power meter that has both bluetooth and ANT+ but unfortunately the bluetooth cadence doesn't work with Strava's Android app, yet (power does, though - woot!).  However, the Stages meter works even better and with longer range for ANT+ and my phone is ANT+ capable but obviously that hasn't been implemented, yet, either.  I've been waiting years for this!  Please update, Strava!!

  • Any chance we can have Ant+ for Android yet please? I am sure there are some tech boffins who use Strava who will sort it for free.
    Thanks
