Include other Activity Types in Profile Stats besides Cycling/Running

I went for a back country ski. I would like to have it show up as part or my exercise and workout  schedule because its motivating to see it there and I can compare winter and summer routines. My heart rate was at a training rate - up to 170 bpm - and we went as hard as we might on a ride or a run. It 'doesn't count' toward my fitness motivational charts as is. This is a request to allow us to determine if we want a workout to count toward our training. As it is only rides and runs count. I think it would be as easy as a box to check - self determination of 'workout' status. I would then include SUP, backcountry ski trips, hikes and other intense physical activities.

  • Agree...the user should be able to distinguish/select ANY/ALL activities to show up in dashboard/training log.  I like to look at my weekly break-downs in hours and often like to include other activities in addition to running/biking & swimming!

  • Support to add all activities in the training log, and should be easy to filter for running, biking or any activity if needed.

  • Yep, would love t be able to wear my HRM on the squash court and use Strava to track the activity (GPS doesn't work inside, otherwise tracking how far I ran would be awesome too :)

  • Strava: Silly of you, IMO, to try so hard to make all these fancy bells and whistles on your site to make it more attractive, when you haven't sorted out this very basic need for us users yet(!) Living in the northern hemisphere there is a long, snowy winter every year, - that we use for different endurance activities (witch you include in labels...) It honestly feels like an insult to have a hard XC-skiing session being ignored in the Training Log as "Rest".... Jesus! Have you ever done any XC skiing? Since you incude the category-option in the first place, please fix this. Otherwise I suggest you scrap the option all together. Even if it's small, I dare to say, XC-Skiing endurance athletes have world class stamina, compared to ANY Endurance sport. Just saying...

  • The easiest thing to do would be to put in a category "Other" where we could put XC skiing, the inline skating, the walking - all these sports mentioned in this thread. You could then choose if you want it MPH like biking or Minute Miles like running. But looks like no one is doing anything about it.

I will continue to put my inline skates down as "runs" but its crazy because I hate the "minute mile" and also that I get all the CRs - because skating is always faster than running. Then I have to flag myself to get the record back to the rightful owner.

As mentioned here these sports are not REST by any means and should add to our totals.

This thread is now a year old and no one at Strava seems to give a flying *&^% about doing anything about it. Boo.

  • yep - hyper annoying not being able to record x-country skiing in my log. I thought it was just me, but I see so many others are voicing their opinions about this. Please do something about this Strava!

  • I would also love this.  The information provided by Strava is great, very useful details and mapping, plus looking at other peoples routes for cross country skiing is fascinating.  It even has pistes and lifts marked on the map.

So Strava, even if it's just initially marked as 'XT' on the log, can we have it added?  Ideally have an 'Other' category which we can select what activities to include.

  • Couldn't agree more with the above, please include all activities in the training log! Switzerland, like most of Middle-northern Europe is a bad place to do running/cycling/swimming in the winter!...cheers to all skiers, xc skiers, backcountry skiers out there!!!

  • I really, really need this! I need to be able to differentiate between normal MTB rides and bikejor (MTB helped by dog pulling). Bikejor is my primary activity but I need to be able to record this properly. surely adding a few more of these categories to the software would be simple for Strava to do...just a dropdown box!

  • I plan on buying some XC skis soon and would expect Strava to be able to do this.

  • Is it possible to add the Back Country ski to the list of sport types when creating a new Club?

At this moment only Cycling, Running, Triathlon and Other are available as Sport type.

If I choose Other, then I see in the Club: Run, Bike and Swim sessions...

I'd like to have a Club that contains only the Back Country ski sessions...

  • I primarily ride my mountain bike, but after some serious injury and some troubles in my life and family i've just got fat, so i started walking on days when i can't effort ride bike (which are my working days as i work on 12hrs shifts). And i think walking by over 6km per hour with my almost 120kg body :D is pretty hard walking so i would like to see my walks in Training Log and activities summary, not only in Calendar.

Please add walking to actual run, swim and bike activities!

    Thanks!

  • Cibrut, what you should do to get around it, is call your Walks RUNS. Then it will calculate.

The solution is VERY Simple here. There needs to be a category called "Other Sport" that counts your workout  that is not a bike, run, or swim in the total hours. This would be for hiking, skating, XC skiing and all the sports mentioned here.

Those of you that walk, just call in a run, and problem solved. Right now I call my inline skating "runs". Then since I get all the Course Records cause Im skating and not running, I flag myself! It's a really a great system (not)

  • The problem is not solved Lisa. If we call our walks 'Runs', how do we differentiate them from our running workouts? The problem is with Strava and will only be solved when they get off their butts and do something about it.

  • considering dropping strava because of this.  Yea, its petty but I like the affirmation that comes from looking at weekly training volumes (especially when the weather seems to have other plans for me).  Nowadays, since I'm mainly backcountry skiing, Strava is telling me that I'm doing zero-hour weeks.  I keep another log, but would like to consolidate.

  • El Lobo: considering to drop Strava? Me too :). I just moved to Endomondo, it will take some time to get used with it, but it looks good, tons of different activities and you can see them all in your training/log etc.

I think i will be fine with Endomondo as i am using my activities tracking only for personal use - i mean i am doing my own challenges, i don't need get hyped by friends etc., i found being satisfied with beating my own record rather than someone's else :).

    Goodbye Strava.

  • Alistair- my suggestion was to Cibrut, my comment was addressed to him:

Cibrut, what you should do to get around it, is call your Walks RUNS. Then it will calculate.

He said he mountain bikes and walks, and the walks don't calculate. Obviously if you run and walk, calling a walk a run, won't work if you are trying to keep a running log separate. But if you do biking and any other activity besides running, like I do inline skating, you can call it a RUN to get around the problem. if you do 2 sports-  If you bike and walk, or bike and X- country ski, you can call the other activity a run to get it to count.

Like I said in my several posts here, the best and easy solution is to add another category called "other sport" which can be used for any other sport.

  • Lisa: thanks, i forgot to reply to your suggestion before. Agree, this workaround works and i used it until now, but i am starting to be fine with Endomondo, no workarounds needed :).

  • I too would like to see more options of self-propelled aktivities do be added to Strava WITH (!) yearly/monthly stats, PR's, KOM's/CR's (where applicable) etc. My personal vote goes for cross country skiing and kayaking but there are certainly many more that others may like. The current XT list is useless.

  • I wish Strava would catch up to other apps and include the other activities they have given us to tag with into the activity calendar. Unless you do cycling or running your activity doesn't count! There at least needs to be a walking category as well as other activity category!

  • I CAN''T add a long 20 mile walk and have it show up like I can for a bike ride, run or swim! Come on, seriously? That's ridiculous.

Have Strava made a comment on this situation anywhere?

  • Support also steered me to post here. I have three main sports, running, cycling and inline skating. I'd like to track personal bests on all three, but strava limits me to two. As such I'm using Endomondo which meets my needs better overall.

  • There are over 3,000 skateparks in the U.S. used by young teens through middle age users. And the number is growing rapidly. Lots of calories being burned, and wattage churned. Of the 6.3-million skateboarders nationwide, about 25% are women, and many skaters are using the activity for regular transportation, just as we all use bike to commute. Adding skateboarding to the options on Strava would open the app up to an entirely new audience, and a generally younger one, too. Imagine independent study or home-school kids getting PE credits for logging time at the skatepark, with a coach or administrator validation the activity via Strava. Plus all us older skaters getting "credit" for shredding, just as we do for cycling. Don't know how to manage "PR"s, but I'm sure there's a way (longest continuous run through a skatepark without stopping, maybe). So, Strava Skateboarding--let's see it!

  • Miki, love the idea of schools holding Strava competitions!  This would help make Strava a 'cool' social app amongst kids and encourage them to be more active.  I'm sure come will cheat, but that's fine, it stills creates some healthy competition and encouragment.

  • Thanks Ellie, appreciate the update! I hope it makes it back one day in the category of 'making Strava the coolest' and I understand how priorities like getting the largest market share take precedence. I'll look for suggestions to make this work for us. Calling activities 'runs' temporarily works though it gives some really fast mile times and king of the mountain's that should not be. Thanks again!

  • I'd also like to see this.

My guess is that Strava doesn't have the financial resources & is awaiting a buy-out. If that doesn't happen though, Strava will bottom out on its select userbase as sites/apps like Endomondo create a wholistic experience and media ecology like Facebook that is inclusive of all outdoor/indoor fitness and activities. Good luck, Strava. You're on the way to becoming the MySpace of tracking apps unless your BOD gets what needs to be done here.
