Manually add Distance for an Indoor/Stationary Activity

When uploading indoor activities like indoor cycling or treadmill, no distance appears. Only HR. Would be useful to activate a field in wich we can type in the distance

  • Hi,

Adding my voice to this.  It really does not make sense to have a platform like Strava where threadmill (or spinning without connected distance meter) cannot accuretely reflect distance.

Things happen: sensors run out of battery, apps fail, people travel and go to a hotel gym, etc.  Why would these activities have to be recorded without distance information?

Plus, note this other comment from Strava Support: "Please note that at this point, the Strava mobile app can't record indoor or stationary activities, although this is something we hope to support in the future." (from https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216919417-Stationary-Treadmill-Activities)

    Hope you reconsider your position.

  • It would be really helpful to be able to add in distance manually for indoor training sessions for those of us who don't have cadence sensors connected to apps on spinning bikes

  • This is a HUGE shortcoming of Strava.  When you do 50 miles on an indoor trainer, Strava records it as 0.  SOOO  FRUSTRATING!!  Strava, you need to change this!!

  • Strava has no intention of adding this requested feature. And it isn't their fault, it's ours. There are a select few among us that feel the need to cheat on their indoor activities. Last week at the gym I saw a "runner" riding his bike on the third treadmill from the right. Now, I know I don't own any particular treadmill at the gym but I do own the KOM for a 5 mile segment on this treadmill at a time of 43 minutes and 38 seconds. And this douche was clearly trying to upset my segment and steal my KOM on his friggin' bike!. In retaliation I'm planning to borrow a treadmill and place it in the back of a Uhaul truck that my buddy will drive at a steady 20mph while I run on the 'mill at my fastest 7:40 pace. Now, I haven't done up the math but I'm sure these combined speeds will certainly put my segment time ahead of the stationary treadmill-bike-riding jackwagon. So let's keep our indoor activities pure and don't put bike trainers in the back of your pickup or mount wheels on your treadmill to ride it down a hill and maybe Strava will one day allow us to edit or indoor times.

  • You´re absolutely right, but cheating is always possible...

So to make it fair, we should have KOMs for solo-cycling and group-cycling because you can never beat a KOM which results from cycling uphill in a large group if it isn't too steep.

But -back on the point- what really is the fault with indoor-activities with no distance is that you can not sync them to other platforms (e.G. Dropbox via tapiriik or Sporttracks) - they do not exist. Bad for training-analysis in winter!

  • Piling on another comment: this year I PR'd my half marathon, but my watch only logged 13.0 miles, therefore Strava doesn't recognize my a) half marathon, b) my PR.  As a Premium subscriber, I expect a bit better.

  • This is the type of thing that keeps me from going Premium!  If I run on a treadmill for an hour and my garmin only says .5 miles I want to be able to adjust the millage.  The solution according to Strava is manually enter the run.  Then I loose all of my HR data.  It just makes a mess of my workout log.  This forces me to use another app to log my workout.  So now if I want to go Premium I have to pay Strava and another company for my other workout log.  So why go premium?  At this point the only reason to be on Strava is because of the large community.  Make it so that I can adjust my workout log and I will drop my other app and switch to Strava Premium.

  • Yet another person pointing out how tone def, or just defiantly stupid, Strava is being on this issue. My Garmin watch is horrendous at measuring distance on a treadmill (approximately .3 miles counted per mile covered) and it would be much easier to edit the info on Strava than to edit the running file, reupload to Garmin, and then delete the first file transferred here each time.

Start paying attention to your customers instead of adding things nobody is asking for.

  • This has gone on for so long and with no possible explanation other than Strava is the worst customer support company in the fitness business. For this reason I would never consider paying them for Premium even if they did fix this glaring omission.

  • Treadmill activities really need this Edit feature to allow manual entry of distance. There is clearly a demand for it.

I wear a Garmin Fenix 3 and it tries unsuccessfully to judge my treadmill distance by using the built in sensors etc on the HR strap and watch. Its really annoying that this data can't be corrected on Strava. Inserting a manual activity seems to be crazy when you are then losing your HR data etc. Really poor from Strava not to give people what they want here!

  • 2 years and still no change..........it's a small thing to add to satisfy a lot of customers.

    Sort this out Strava!

  • I use a Garmin VivoActive HR and a WaterRower, the rowing stats recorded are fine, import to Garmin Connect (great app by the way;) but when imported to Strava the distance is missing but most other things are there. Without the distance the activity is next to useless.

I agree with others, there is no way I would currently pay for premium Stava, they just don't seem to fix the obvious things and rely on segments to keep people interested. I have to say I've been really impressed with the Garmin Connect site/app/devices.

  • Yeah this is really the one reason why I canceled my premium membership. I will not sign up again unless they fix this problem. For now, Strava is an incomplete solution for me. I need to use it in conjunction with other tools to meet my needs.

From a dev's perspective, this is NOT that hard.

  • For me Garmin Connect has become far too cluttered. Too many clicks and annoying navigation, when you get to where you want its good but not always simple to get there.

I see Strava as being like the 'whatsapp' of the sports tracking world, any user of any device can meet up there and share activities. Its in a position to dominate the market quite easily but like others have said they seem far too reliant on segments to gain interest. Sadly theres a lot of competition doing different things right (and different things wrong) instead of one go to provider of a good service.

  • C'mon Henro! You are unfair to the Strava support team!

If you look closely you will notice that almost year ago (in March) they posted response to this thread!

  • The issue with treadmills and spin bikes, etc, is that the distance and effort varies wildly and is in no way an accurate estimation of effort.

When on a training machine, the only accurate measurements of effort are those recorded directly from your body (such as heart rate and respiration) rather than what the clocks tell you.  Strava records these.  If you want to take note of the machines settings and/or the distance then just add them to the description.  Same for weight lifting, etc.

  • Surely the same can be said for GPS, HR and other numbers that we collect from training?

Yes, there is a risk of people cheating but that;s their issue if they have an ego that needs inflating but faking training values. Strava need to listen to their client base and add in a relatively simple option in order to retain its customer base

  • Dylan Thomas, the same could be said with trail running (mountain biking) vs road running (road biking). I can run faster at a lower effort on the road than I can on the trails. My 10k trail time and 10k road time are pretty different. When I run 10 miles on a treadmill I'd like to add this distance to my weekly mileage since I "ran" 10 miles. I still haven't heard a reason to exclude this feature from Strava. And as such, I'll never be a paid member and I encourage others to not pay the premium membership price.

  • I just noticed someone I follow using Zwift, and it sure seems to work automatically for him (distance, elevation, heart rate, power).  Now I'm thinking Strava wants to monetize stationary activities by forcing you to use their products/partnerships to do so.  Which is fine, but just come out and say so.

  • Personally I couldn't care less about cheating because I'm not using my WaterRower to compete with anyone. If someone wants to put false numbers in, fine, there issue. I just want to be able to row, use my Garmin VivoActiver HR to record all the stats, put the distance in that the WaterRow says I've done and then I have a record of the row, the 500M splits, the heart rate, the recovery rate ...........

People cheat all the time on the mountain bikes, so what is the issue with indoor stuff. I could ride a electic bike down my local trail and blitz the KOM. If people are that self absorbed about that kind of stuff I recommend a life, you only have one.

  • From what I understand modifying .fit files and adding distance is not as simple as adding a single number for distance but rather requires all the GPS points that create that distance.  This might be why Strava hasn't taken on this work and why they suggest adding the workout manually. I'm guessing they don't create a .fit file in that case.  I use Zwift for my indoor workouts which creates proper .fit files, supports cycling and running and can upload directly to Strava.

  • Strava documented their ignorance and arrogance of this issue here a year ago: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208835547/comments/213553377

VOTE with your wallet and realize that to PAY for a service who remains completely unresponsive to a basic NEED - a NEED which is within the most fundamental mission of this service (Run/Cycle), no one should need a headline! Strava only cares about revenue. Period. Leave them in your rearview mirror like the bad social habit they are.

    Still nothing happened.

Strava, could you please give a Feedback on this? Why not doing this change? Too difficult?

Hey Strava, stop being a douche.

  • I started using this app because it links to the polar app and I have more friends on this app.... The polar app is much more complete and allows you to edit your workouts but you have to own a polar device to utilize this.  but seeing as this has been a problem for a long time and hasn't been resolved I don't see this changing any time soon so I will be uninstalling this app.

  • Decided to cancel my Premium trial membership due to this. Can't believe the thread was started in 2014 with no solution. Really thought Strava were on the side of their users but apparently not.
