Import GPX files as a Strava Route

Lots of routes built on the sites, would like to import to route builder section and not recreate them all.

  • The lack of this is the reason I am uninstalling this from my iphone.

This needs to be a priority

  • You can import GPX routes into Strava, though it takes a few steps.

    1) Upload the GPX file manually (as if it was a ride you've done)

    2) Select private when saving

    3) Open the ride, on the "spanner" menu select "Create Route" this will load the route into the route editor.

    4) Save the route

    5) Job done,  you can now delete the imported ride so it won't appear in your ride history

I'm a premium member so I've not been able to check if this works with the free accounts.

  • @Rick Harris, And now try that with a trail route. Fail. Been there, done that, tried the manual mode to no avail. Job done? YMMV.

  • @Alexandre P    The Strava route planner does not support trial routes very well,  that's a different issue to importing.

  • I use Strava for all my activities and would prefer to use it over MapMyRide.  However, whether we like it or not, MapMyRide has been in existence for a long time and offers a boundless number of existing routes.  It would be truly great if I could export a .gpx file from MapMyRide and import it to Strava as a route, but right now I can't do that.  After reading the above I think I understand why.   I also understand why time data would be required in order to create an activity, but I do not understand why time data is necessary to create a route.   To me, a route is essentially just a map, where time is irrelevant.  Am I missing something?

For now I can use a combination of Strava and MapMyRide, but it would be nice to keep everything in Strava.  I think you'd definitely pick up some more users by offering the ability to import .gpx routes from MMR, and you'd make your existing users happier!

  • This is a really frustrating and fundamental omission.  I'm stunned that it's not considered core functionality.

    +1

I have a race route I want to load into Strava but as it includes 'non-road' sections it garbles it

Please do add this feature as a priority

At the moment I'll keep on using Garmin for this purpose

  • This would be very valuable feature to have. There are many existing routes as GPX files, and redoing them manually in Strava's Route Creator is unnecessary, manual and error-prone work.

  • As many may agree, the MapMyRide route creator is still much better than the Strava one which is of course still in Beta so no worries there.

However, Strava has been around long enough and has a large enough pull of cyclists and CHARGES ENOUGH for it's premium that it should be able to accept just a few coordinates?!?!?!

And since I will continue to use the MMR route builder for its superiority and clarity of hill classifications etc. and many people here have made clear that they have other reasons for importing GPX files without time data like others' maps, race routes and Garmin compatibility, I imagine this is one of the most important and sought after omissions from the service.

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not a paying customer...................

  • Need this feature as well as I have plenty of routes on other sites like gpsies.com, which I'd like to transfer to Strava.

  • I have given up on using Strava for when I want to track routes - importing the GPS data is a pain and when you can do it, the route builder then screws it up anyway. It may work well for roads but it is useless for any off-road (i.e. trail running / mountain biking) routes!

  • Upload GPX with (virtual) time stamps, then create route. afterwards delete fictitious activity again!

  • Use GPSBabel to add time stamps to a gps file.

  • Use "GPS Track Editor" http://www.gpstrackeditor.com/ . When the gpx file is loaded, it will ask to generate  time stamps. Save the gpx from "GPS Track Editor" which can then be uploaded into strava and a route created.

  • Installed both GPSbabel and track editor and neither of them added the time stamps ...

  • There are so many beautiful detailled routes professionally made, this routes should be updateable, so Cyclisti can ride the same routes easely, have navigation and can compare there efforts excactly. Thanks in advance!

  • Thanks Sean! GPS Track Editor worked perfectly.

@Duncan- try again mate, track editor did the job in one go. The file uploaded fine. Though agree that this should be a stock feature in Strava,

  • @ Nilay ... Found that GPSBabel needs command line input to make it work. Could not get GPS Track editor to work at all. Unless it needs a CLI too. When I discovered that, it made it much easier to plan the route. I planned the ride with cycleroutes.co.uk Downloaded the GPX file Added time stamps with GPSBabel. Uploaded it to Strava Then rode it. It is an awful lot of messing around and three bits of software. Why? Plus, I had to have experience of command line to execute the GPSBabel software, because the GUI didn't work.

  • channeling your GPX files through bikeroutetoaster also works in assigning the timestamps.

Then you can import it as a ride and make it into a route on strava if you wish.

Additional bonus of using bike route toaster (strange name for a site, I know) is that you can fine-tune estimated speed on flats/climbs, making up a realistic "virtual partner", or giving you an estimate of rate of completion of your route; as well as auto-created cue-sheet that may be helpful to randoneurs or others, especially those using Garmin 500/510, rather than 800, as it gives "3.4 miles to next turn, Right turn" type cue sheet info on the screen.

  • for people saying how desperately they need it - please read through comments, you can do this TODAY, just import GPX as a ride and then make into a route. If GPX is from mapmyride or other service that has no time stamps, run it through another site, like bikeroutetoaster.com, and you are all set.

  • @Oleg - As said previously that doesn't work for gpx files that include trail / single track sections as when you create a route from an activity it recalculates it to go along roads completely breaking the route. This recalculation on creation can't be turned off :(.

I just signed up to strava assuming it could do this (what I thought would be simple a) task. As I don't really ride for times more for finding new routes / places, I guess I'm not the target audience.

  • Hello folks!

We're are working on some very exciting new features and improvements, but the ability to upload a GPX file (without time data) directly as a Strava Route isn't among them. We appreciate your feedback, but please understand that we simply do not have the bandwidth to incorporate each and every user suggestion into our product. This feature idea will still exist in the "product backlog" where they can be prioritized at some later time when development allows.

  • C'mon now Elle.  =)  I'm an IT guy and I have trouble with this being a bandwidth issue. The size of these gpx files is itty-bitty (thats tech-speak for really little) even for a ride with several hundred waypoints. If every Strava user in existence elected to upload a gpx file at the same moment, I could believe there may be a short term bandwidth issue (for the few minutes it would take to clear the queue). But seriously. I've been a premium member for a year, and a die-hard strava fan. But even I am considering cancelling for other options. Let your development crew know that without this functionality, premium isn't all that premium. Users = customers and this feature is a big one to use to help drive premium membership.  Hope to hear of a change in plans for adding this soon.

  • I agree it would be a useful feature.   I have several routes others have built and I would like to import their rides and modify them to my needs.  Garmin has nothing like this either and Strava adding it would be another nail in their coffin.  Strava has a good thing going for the most part, but does lack simple basic features that all premium members should be able to access.

  • I got tired of waiting for Strava. They are promising to add the GPX import functionality for months and there is nothing still. I have switched to the Runtastic application (www.runtastic.com), I can import a GPX easily from www.runtastic.com and sync it with my iPhone. In addition, I can pair my Garmin's accessories (I have a Garmin Edge 500 but I can have the Runtastic Road Bike app to get the heart rate data directly from the strap and even the cadence sensor. It also works with other Bluetooth sensors, it's brilliant since I don't have to pay monthly (the app cost $4.95 in the App Store). The app also give voice directions and you can export your workout to Strava!! (they also have a monthly plan in runtastic.com in case you like paying a subscription). Moreover, you can use the map in offline mode (you will see the map but not the GPS navigation of course) thus saving a lot go battery.
