Feedback for the new Group Events feature - Clubs

Today we launched the latest improvement for clubs - Group Events. Clubs can now create and share group rides and runs with club members.

Clubs admins can begin to make use of this new feature right away by adding group rides and runs to their club pages. Events can be one-time or recurring, can have a route associated with them, and are easily shared with others on Strava, as well as via Twitter, Facebook, and email.

This is just the beginning - there are many ways that we can expand on the events feature in the future and we’d love to hear your ideas.  If you have questions, comments or feedback, please post them here!

Even though we might not acknowledge every comment, our product team will be checking in on the feedback posted here and responding when we can. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

  • Event only appears from clicking on the notification. Does not show on/from the main page. At a minimum an 'Events' link or a view of events from the main club page would be nice.

    Thanks!

  • @Shaun, the Event should show on the Club page - if not can you start a direct support ticket so that someone on our team can look into this?

@Petyr - I would also recommend starting a support ticket. This seems to be a challenging problem to figure out, and it's much easier to troubleshoot through a direct support ticket! Thanks!

  • Elle--

I would like to use the Group Event feature to supplant the email I now send out for our club (please see email attached for this Saturday's Ride).  But I cannot add all of the email content to the Club Event.

Its important on a Group Event that the listing authoritatively answer every inevitable question, otherwise these must be addressed outside of the listing, which defeats the purpose.

So, my request is that the Group Event have fields for everything that is in our email.

    Thanks,

    Will von Kaenel

  • Elle--

Okay, here's a problem.   One our our team members created a Route.

    http://app.strava.com/routes/220564

I want to add his Route to our Group Event.

    http://app.strava.com/clubs/265/group_events/1580

But the only choices I have to add are my routes.   There doesn't seem to be a way I can copy anyone else's Route (or Ride) to My Routes.

There needs to be a way to add other members Routes and Rides into the 'Select a Route' field.

    Thanks,

    Will von Kaenel

  • Hi Ellen,

Could be the problem to save my route with some parts in manual mode on?

  • @William, try clicking the 'star' icon on the route that you did not create. That Starred Routes feature should add the route to your route page. Let us know if that works.

@Petyr - I'm not quite sure what you are referring to. Can you send an example or more specifics?

  • Elle-

The super-subtle star icon did add the route, just as you said.  Thank goodness for Strava Customer Support and Elle, because the star isn't especially prominent in the Strava webpage firmament, nor is it intuitive that clicking on the star will do anything in particular.  But, I guess that solves the problem, so great!

  • I'm actually using Group Events weekly for our Club, so as I encounter things I am going to post them here.  That's good, right?

I created a Group Event for March 29

    http://www.strava.com/clubs/265/group_events/1975

But on our Club page, the March 29th event is the Upcoming Event for March 29 is our past event from March 22.

  • --Actually, the wrong event is listed here:  http://www.strava.com/clubs/265

--I quickly made a route using Popularity, and initially routed us up a popular dirt trail in Forest of Nicene Marks, instead of Eureka Canyon as I intended.   It would be helpful if Heat Maps differentiated road from dirt.  What would be especially helpful is a system of colors that provided road/trail surface indication.  Smooth road, rough road, gravel trail, dirt, single track, etc. (But that is not a Group Event feature, so should go to a different thread).

--I've already received an email regarding the weather this Saturday (20% chance of rain).    The Group Event page should icnlude a weather box linked to the start location, and a drop down as for options regarding weather.

  • It is common with a Group Event to have two rides, such as an A or B ride, 100k or 100 mile option, etc.,  or an alternative ride (such as in case of weather).    Thus it would be helpful to have within Group Events the ability to post and label more than one route.  This is where Strava Group Events could be quite helpful, as the format of the Group Events would help explain these options, which can be a source of confusion in an email.

  • Having drawn a 62 mile route,  ( www.strava.com/routes/229348 )  I want to offer a shorter distance alternative.   So, I want this alternative to turn back at Capitola, and go back up the way we came rather than continuing on the Eureka Canyon.  So, I bring up my route to 62 mile route to Edit, if I Undo to pare back the 63 mile route back to Capitola, everything disappears, and I have to redo the whole thing. I could try to corral the Eureka Canyon part graphically and wrangle it back to go up SJ-Soquel, but that trick never works.  If I Edit the route, and try to save it as a new Route with a new name, retaining the old route, again I am stymied.  The option is only 'Save', with no 'Save As'.  So, even if I want to change only a small part of the route to provide an alternative I have no election except to start entirely from scratch.   Oh, I could download the .gpx and then upload the ,gpx as a work-around.  However, I can't do that either.  A lot of this relates to the Routes rather than Group Events I know, however, I figure, Elle, you might know someone in the Department of Routes.  Moreover, Routes and Group Events are so intertwined that they cannot be cleanly separated.

  • The Meet Up address is very important, as it can be a disastrous source of group event confusion if entered incorrectly..  It would be best to enter an address that is recognized as in a database such as Google Maps, with a link to the location in a mapping program.  If it is at an establishment (e.g. a coffee shop), then it would be good to be able to offer a maps listing for that establishment.

Where the Meet Up location is at a geographic feature without a clear associated address (intersection, park, parking lot, etc), it would be especially helpful to provide guidance as to finding that feature's street address, or the nearest valid street address.  Participants want to get into their car and enter into their car or phone's GPS a street address for GPS guidance, and only with street address can this be done easily.

  • is there any way to get a feed export to all of the upcoming group events we create? we have a intranet community page for our biking group, but by/large I'm trying to do everything in strava--would be great if i could pull that feed in much like the "Club Activities" widget.

    thanks!

  • It would be cool to be able to propose a few different routes and then have the members vote on which route they want to do at the next event.

  • I have added a group event before and it worked fine but now for some reason I just get a pop-up box that stays blank?

I think it is a fantastic feature and would like to see it enhanced with many of the suggestions above. More than that, would like it to work again!

  • Our weekly ride is sent out as an email.  It would be great to have a feed export as Marko B mentions that could be sent along with the system we have now.  If a ride is posted on the Club site, that depends on the audience having to go to the site, which won't happen.   The email could be sent with the link to the site, but then the audience still has to go to the link, and the email is not sufficient onto itself.    The feed export should be available in several different forms.  One could be in a race flyer ,pdf format.   Any bike race will have a one page race flyer, and so having the ride in that format will be familiar, and have a pro look.    Example of race flyer:  http://www.ridepikespeak.com/usa-cycling-race-flyer.html

  • I'm in Australia, so dd/mm/yyyy. I've found that I have to enter the date as dd/mm/yyyy even though that means it has my ride listed as 4th August. It looks wrong, but at least when I do that, it shows up in the group home page as a ride that is upcoming (except it still says 4th August).

Then, once I edit it, it has changed to 08/05/2014 and not stayed at 08/04/2014.

  • I thought I'd gather together a little summary of what we've seen above for feedback for the Club Events feature. That way it will be easy to add and comment further without having to read through every comment! Please continue to add to this list by commenting below:

    • Group Attendance: This can be said may ways, "Join", "Accept/Decline" button, +1 button, RSVP, "I'm in" button, etc. The gist is to add a button for folks to indicate whether they will participate in the group event, and to show a list of who can make the event. (This is first on our list of features to add!)
    • Notifications: Strava notification or email to remind those who wish to join the Group Event, either 12 or 24 hours in advance.
    • Weather Widget: Add a weather widget with local data to the Events page
    • "Upcoming Events" widget to be used on external sites: Similar to our Club Feed or Athlete Feed widget, a way to bring information about Group Events in your club to other sites such as the Club site.
    • Add a "Meeting Time" field: This would be different from "Start Time" as an option to specify when the Group meets versus when the Group leaves the meeting place.
    • Custom field for "Level/Event Type": Allow for other Event tags besides Casual (no drop), Tempo, and Hammerfest. This would solve the Dutch translation issue with "Tempo" and allow for an entry like "Moderate pace, no waiting".
    • Link to Map for "Meet up Spot": If an address or point of interest is added as the Meet up Spot, this should link to a map of the location
    • Add a Comments section: Separate from a general Club discussion, Group Events comments would allow discussion about the Group Event specifically. Option to be notified of comments if you have joined the Event.
    • Allow any Club member to create an Event: Currently, only club creators and admins can create Group Events
    • Integration into the Strava mobile app: Especially for mobile features such as the "I'm running x minutes late" alert to the group
    • Group Event export: Ability to export the information in the Group Event to a range of formats/uses (PDF, email, etc.)
    • Link to more than one Route per Event: Add an "A" and "B" route, or attach 3 possible routes for the group to choose from.

Keep the ideas and feedback coming! This is already a fantastic list for the Product team to consider adding to the Group Events feature. Thanks!

  • Additionally, I wanted to add some notes about the feedback above on our Strava Routes feature:

The ability to "Duplicate" an existing Strava Route, and edit that copy while preserving the original is coming very soon! We're also working on a way to make one of your existing Strava Activities into a Strava Route. This would mean that you can easily select the Route for the Group Events feature from one of your existing activities.

@Predrag - a great way to find good roads in places where you are visiting is to use the Strava Heatmap that is part of the Routes builder. Click on the "Gear" icon on the left side and flip the switch for the Heatmap. You'll see all the roads in orange and red where people ride in that area.

There is a forum here that suggests the Routes builder accept GPX files for upload as new Routes: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/29275730-Import-GPX-files-to-Strava-Route-builder

Any other good Routes feature suggestions can be added as a new Forum here (Search first to make sure it doesn't exist already!): https://strava.zendesk.com/forums/20154338-Strava-Feature-Suggestions

  • @Andrew - Unfortunately, I cannot provide any information around a timeline. This forum is simply to collect feedback to pass along to the product team :)

Also, are there still any bugs around the date format when creating a new Group Event?

A tip for more social clubs, it can be helpful to have the Club creator make other members Admins. This is just the click of a button to make any current club member an admin, and any admin can create a Group Event.

@Bryne - Are you still getting a blank Events page?

@Warren Marshall - do you mind elaborating on comments 2 and 3 above? "Provide a way to select all club members instead of manually having to select each one by one" and "Enable a group email feature so that you do not have to input email addresses each time."

@Martin - I'm still working on the report for the potential bug you've found....

  • @Elle - Still getting the blank screen. have logged it with Strava Support and @Sheila is working on it but cant replicate the problem. It works on MAC but not iPad, or Windows. Have tried different browsers (Safari (both iPad and Windows), Opera, IE11, Firefox and Chrome) with no success. All the other Java scripts work fine, just not this one! Quite perplexed...

  • @Elle, that is really nice.  Elle listens, she...*listens*!

The est. moving time is a Route mapping feature, but it affects Club Events directly.  In looking at a Club Event, members will be estimating when they will return, as they may have other obligations.  That Strava does this is great because its an objective 3rd Party estimate, and thus avoids reproach if the estimate is optimistic.

We have discovered that  Est. Moving Time  does not always account for hills.  I mapped a 6.6 mile, 8.2% grade hill climb, and the Est. Moving Time  was 26 minutes.  A time like that would require Kreuzotter's default 157 lb. man to pump out 561 watts.  So, for this one hill climb it was way off.

    http://www.strava.com/routes/270979

But when we did a 100 mile route with 10,000 ft. of climbing the est. moving time wasn't nearly so far off.  The est. was 6:39 minutes

     http://app.strava.com/routes/205122

The actual moving times of 7 hrs to 7 hrs 40 minutes.

    http://app.strava.com/activities/121199001

I don't know how it can be so far off on a 6.6 mile hill climb, which should be the easiest thing to calculate.

  • William, you may be interested to know how we estimate moving time for routes:

Your estimated moving time for a Route is calculated by your 4 week average speed. On your profile you'll see your average distance per week, and your average time riding per week based on your last 4 weeks of activities. We take that average and apply it to your estimated moving time.

Cool part is that if you share the route, the person will see their own personal estimated moving time based on their stats, not yours.

If you typically ride flatter routes, and map out a very hilly route in the route builder, this could cause an underestimate of the time it takes to complete.

  • Thanks, @Elle, it is good to know how these estimates are divined.  I had thought it was a super-sophisticated proprietary Strava algorithm that started with the rider's estimated watts/kg,  analyzed the route for factors such as elevation gain, etc.,  and then crowd-sourced average speeds on various segments to arrive at an estimate so accurate as to be spooky.  Now I know that the algorithm is, uh, er, parsimonious, and multiplies average speed x route miles.

This Saturday we are planning an 83 mile 8000 ft/climbing ride (for the Strava Gran Fondo 4), and these estimates are definitely part of the planning.  Know I now that much of the estimated time is based on my flat commute and flat tandem rides, and I can add time to the estimate based on the 8000 ft.of climbing, and thus avoid the reproach of the riders and their families that expected the rider to be back an hour earlier.

  • elle:

Your current model is the following:

    time = A × distance

    I recommend the following model:

    time = A × distance + B × climbing - C × descending

This is 3 parameters instead of 1, but they don't need to be derived without constraint.  For example:

    1. Derive A0 = riding time / riding distance for sample period

    2. extract portion of rides which are "climbs"

    3. calculate riding time / riding distance for this portion

    4. extract portion which are "descents"

    5. calculating riding time / riding distance for this portion.

Then it's a simple algebraic equation to calculate A, B, and C in the model.

  • Right on Dan! Nice to have you chime in, although I feel like I'm back in high school math class. The forum that's been started on this topic can be found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/28103400

Do you mind posting your suggestion there too? I'm sure the existing algorithm is more of a 'first pass' so I think our developers will be interested to review your thoughts. Thanks! And hope you're well.
