Organizing Routes / Route Search

I love Strava! I just wish I could organize my Routes by distance, elevation, rating, starting location, road vs mtn Bike), or even more simply be able to search the route name would be a great improvement.

Thanks for the great App!

  • I agree.  I have 218 routes and wish I could search through them or sort them into different categories.

  • Being able to sort alphabetically (rather than only "date created") would already be a great first step. Users can then just rename their routes (eg) by activity, starting point and/or distance, or whatever, to the get routes overview to display as they want

  • Agreed - Even an alphabetical sort would be a bonus.

  • Folders would be great, or tags... just some way to organise routes!

  • I totally agree - I also create a lot of routes, which I suppose I could keep deleting if (say) I'm unlikely to go back to a country to ride.  But it ought to be pretty easy I'd have thought.

  • Yep, I design loads of routes for our cycling club and its becoming increasingly difficult to find the one I want without any search or filtering facility. I currently have to put a link in a separate Google spreadsheet so that I can keep track of them all. Just a simple word filter would work fine. I also find it difficult, due to the long list, to find the right route when adding a route to a new event. The date of creation alongside the route name might help there and be an easy fix?

  • I would LOVE to see more organisation of routes, it would be very helpful, these are a really popular feature.

    Things that would be helpful:

    Sorting

    • Alphabetically
    • Distance
    • Elevation
    • Date created

    Filtering

    • Distance based filter (e.g. over 50km)
    • Elevation based filter (e.g. 1000m)
    • Elevation per km avg filter (give overall difficulty of climbing e.g. 10m/km)
    • Tag search/filter

    Organisation

    • Ability to create folders (e.g. Trip to Italy routes)
    • Ability to tag (and search) routes (e.g. #amalfi, #clubroute)

    Additional bonuses

    • Ability to view all routes on a map and the ability to switch some on or off. This would be useful to find routes and compare routes.

Really think this would be a great area to improve (the already fantastic) routing capabilities.

Oh, one aside.... it would be FANTASTIC if we could filter by road bike suitable as I've been caught out a couple of times (once leading a group) taking a ride on an off road trail by following the global heatmap, it really would be handy to be able to see filter by something like road/hybrid/mtb.

  • Another idea would be to sort on "distance from current location to route start point".

The browser can ask the user for the user's current location, and Strava knows the start location of each route.

  • I can see there are a number of requests for this in different threads - becoming a real pita to work with routes without some sort of (any will do!) filtering or sorting on the routes ... distance from a location, distance of route, elevation of route, etc..  I currently page through pages of routes trying to get a route I've done before.  Be great to get this sorted.

    Cheers

  • Andy gave a great solution to organizing routes in absence of a search bar or filter (pasting links into Excel and search that way...). It requires extra time for those of us who create club routes on a regular basis. As a premium member, I would like to see a way to easily search "my routes". I currently have 118 and with the 2017 season beginning, I will be adding many more.

  • Another request here for My Routes sorting/filtering function. If nothing else then by distance would be nice but adding elevation gain and estimated duration, i.e. metrics that are already available, would be great.

  • Me too - I've just deleted a bunch of less-used routes to make it easier to find others, but I ride regularly and I don't like hamster-wheeling along the same old roads.

    My thought process is generally:

    • - Where am I starting from (home, work, holiday location, etc.)? [Tag/Filter]
    • - Am I riding road, CX or MTB? [Tag/Filter]
    • - How far do I want to go? [sort or range filter]
    • - How much climbing do I want to do? [sort or range filter]

I'd live without the last one if I could narrow it down to, say road routes from home between 75 and 90km

  • I would totally agree with that and waiting long such an possibility, which would help very much for an better overview of the self created routes!!! This should be quiet simple to do these changes... With about 50 routes it takes to much time to find a specific route, and i love your route editor. You should orientate at the solutions on other sides like GPSies & Co...

  • There's one phrase that encapsulates Strava management: making a habit of not bothering with member suggestions, or even acknowledging them. Good luck everyone - they're not listening.

  • We definitely need a sort function for our Strava routes.

    Here's another vote for that.

  • Yes, much needed! Having the ability to filter routes based on location, distance, elevation and so on would help to target routes based on ability and training goals.

  • C'mon Strava! There seems to be sufficient support, from your Premium Members, to have a "Search" function in the 'Routes' section. What's holding you up...?!

PS: I would also advocate for a "Folder" section, which would give us the additional ability of filing them as we like...

  • Is there any work being done on route searching/organising,

just  like the folk above, it would be good if routes could be organised by starting point, distance, elevation etc.

if you could assign them to folders for style of ride etc

  • I see that this thread started in March 2016. I posted my resounding "yes!" in reply for being able to search routes, and several people have also done so. I find it frustrating that Strava doesn't seem to be monitoring their own blog and at least posting something to let us know whether this is in the works or out of their scope of work at this time. The silence is frustrating and it makes me want to cancel my paid account and transfer my routes to another platform. Can we have something other than "crickets" from your end, Strava?

  • It is highly frustrating that the prioritise stuff like 'Facebook style' feeds and posts that not many seem fussed about above listening to their paying community for genuinely useful stuff like this.

VeloViewer have actually gone some way to solving this using Strava's API. You can get a list of your Strava routes and resort them in many different ways, that alone is a start and wouldn't be hard for Strava to implement. It is a bit of a poor show.

As you say, a simple response to show these comments are being monitored would be appreciated, the radio silence is a bit frustrating

  • A similar feature to the new Garmin Edge 1030.

Finding new routes based on Strava Community rides.

  • It appears that Strava management has found a way to sort our Route searching requests, directly into their SPAM folder! Their ambivalence towards this feature is truly baffling...!!

  • I think routes have a lot of potential, unfortunately it's a feature that not many people use due to the lack of folders to organize them. It'll be also great to sort them in many different ways (name, lenght, elevation, etc). Pleeeeease add this feature!

  • I've already moved on to other route-creation programs, as have many others I know because of the lack of attention from Strava on issues such as this. What follows is leaving Strava, or at least never, ever giving them any money again. Well played Strava. Well played.

  • Hi Rob, could you share which program you've gone to (or anyone else for that matter).  I'm up at nearly 300 routes in Strava and it is now unmanageable...which compounds the problem as I tend to draw the same route again rather than hunt to find it.  Maybe if we started discussing where we were moving to it would trigger some action?

  • Brendan, I think that's a great suggestion. While I don't have as many routes as you, it is a huge time sink to search up links. Additionally, I find that the cue sheets 99% of the time have blatant inaccuracies. I hear that ridewithgps is good though I haven't spent time mapping routes there (yet). I also hear that you can import them from ridewithgps into Strava, though I'm not sure why one would do that. At any rate, what are others using to map routes and how well do you like the platform you've switched over to?

  • @Brendan I'm using RidewithGPS mostly now - the route creation tool isn't *quite* as good as Strava (routing bike paths tends to be problematic for example, but that may be because it uses different mapping) but the ability to look through your routes based on name, distance, total VM, date created, or location is infinitely better than Strava's non-offering, as is the actual route screen which shows you detail in rows down the page with all your routes effectively on the same page. Using the exported data to give turn-by-turn info on your GPS is also a feature I've been using lately where i'm not familiar with the roads, which Strava doesn't do (in my experience).

There are others out there, but atm RidewithGPS is simply a better option and it's unnecessary for me to use other alternatives. I don't have 300 routes to manage, it's good with the 100 or so I've currently got (and growing quickly). My 100 on strava I don't bother looking at any more!
