Different Heart Rate zones for Running and Cycling

Although I saw several posts on this topic, I really want to give this issue the attention it deserves.

As a paying Premium member, I want to have my data to have value. For that, I have to be able to differentiate my running and cycling HR performances. Now, usually, the max (or treshold) HR value of running is well above cycling, mainly because with running you use more muscles that require hence more oxygen. For example, my running HR Treshold is 160, whereas my cycling HR Treshold is 150. Having set my HR values on running, my cycling HR data are useless.

It wouldn't be too much trouble correcting this I hope, I know Trainingpeaks does give me the opportunity to differentiate HR zones between sports, so I can use Trainingpeaks to analyze my workouts. WIth Strava Premium I cannot.

So, I would give a shout out to the people of Strava, to add this feature, so that my Premium account can be more valuable. Thank you.

    Hi Folks,

Thanks for taking the time to leave comments and upvotes. Due to the overwhelming number of potential projects on our roadmap, we haven't had the chance to consider this yet.

  • This would be a great addition to Strava. My Garmin device allows for different HR values in the 5 training zones. These HRs are determined by laboratory testing at quite an expense to myself. Max HR on the bike is some 17 beats below Max HR on run (163bpm vs 180bpm). Similarly, OBLA is 137bpm on bike and 160bpm on running.  these differences are very important when it comes to analysing results of training sessions.

  • I have the same problem. You have alerady mentioned you would add different heart zones setting in your comment in 2014 and still no update. As a premium member I would also expect that feature!

What's the value of the suffer score if it is based on the wrong training zones? I think this is a necessity in a premium version. Maybe we should all switch to Trainingspeaks until Strava solves this issue.

  • +1 on separate HR metrics for running vs cycling.

  • That is probably why my Suffer score of cycling activities is so much lower than with running.

I agree that the one of both becomes useless in this, and thus also the fitness and freshness has no meaning anymore

  • Yup.  Me too.  I also want this.  My runs show up as being primarily in "anaerobic" since my zones are set from mountain biking.

  • +1 I agree. Its annoying to have to get out my chart and customize the zones for different activities.

  • Yes please, it's crazy Strava doesn't have this already. I can do a long hard ride and get a very low suffer score and fitness progression on the graph compared to a much easier and shorter run.

It is incredibly disappointing to get such a low suffer score after a brutal ride, yet running a short way gets more +fitness points because of the higher heart rate.   Sort it out Strava.  Also I do a lot of 'Fell Running', please include altitude climbed on the feed like cycling has.

  • This article in “Active” (https://www.active.com/articles/why-are-there-heart-rate-discrepancies-in-cycling-vs-running) appears to suggest that heart rates for both running and cycling should be similar and that the reason they may not be, is that the athlete may be more specialized in th one discipline than the other. In other words, we should re-think our training program and focus on Training that would elevate the cycling HR to that of running?

  • I'm glad to know I'm not the only one struggling with this issue.  I'm not a chiseled athlete but I do want to know if my cross training in other sports is supporting my overall fitness.  Right now, it shows no value. Actually, I was very disappointed in my performance on the cycle.  Now I realize it's not me. Please Strava developers take on this project so we can be the best we can be!

  • Strava I applaud you for improving on suffer score by introducing relative effort. But you advertise this as a way of comparing efforts between sports, diciplines and people, when in fact it is useless in that regard without having the ability to have different heart rate zones for different sports.
