Android Wear 2.0 Feedback

I love the push that Strava is making to improve its standalone app on Android Wear devices.  That being said, I think there are a few additional features that should be added that will greatly increase the capabilities of the app.  Some of them will only be feasible on devices with GPS and LTE, but others will only need the GPS.

1. Workouts - it would be great if workouts could be designed on the web or phone and synced to the watch.  Set intervals with time or distance parameters that can vibrate to let you know when you hit the next portion.

2. Beacon - premium users should be able to broadcast their location at set intervals to designated contacts.  Battery life drain would be crazy if it were set too often, but perhaps once a minute or every 30 seconds this could be done.

3. Maps - for watches that have GPS and LTE, these maps could by dynamic and change when the user changes location.  Even if LTE is not available, select maps could be downloaded and stored offline.  Your path could be traced on the map.

4. Live Segments - similar to the last feature, it would be great if this could be dynamically tracked and updated.  Otherwise, segments could be stored offline and you could be notified as you run/bike them.

5. Advanced metrics - it would be great if AW watches could provide the same types of advanced metrics as Garmin watches.  Cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, etc should be able to be tracked with all of the AW sensors.

  • Are live segments supported at all?

I'm looking to buy a new watch and looking at the Garmin Forerunner 735XT simply because it supports live segments.  From your post, it looks like Live Segments are not supported, and you need to compare them after uploading your workout.  Any info would be great!

  • I don't have an AW watch with a GPS built-in - so I unfortunately cannot test it.  But I can almost say with certainty that live segments are not supported.

Reading the description available on the app's page does not give any mention of any of the subjects that I've described in my post.  And there hasn't been a response from anyone at Strava, so I can't say anything with certainty about these areas.

  • Such a bummer you can't do live segments on Android Wear! A real missed opportunity that would be a real selling point for Strava Premium. With a connected phone tucked in your jersey pocket you wouldn't even need an Android Wear device with GPS.

  • It would also be great if there was an official list of each major Android Wear watch and what works and what doesn't.  Not getting the heart rate monitor used on my huawei watch  (v1).

  • Is there any way to use and ant+ HR sensor and strava wear app?

I used to run strava on my cellphone (Galaxy S7) with an Ant+ HR band, with the phone in the pocket, using a LG Watch Urbane to monitor my HR and time.

Now, it seems that the watch uses only its own really bad HR sensor. Is it possible to use the watch the old way?

    Thanks!

  • @Dionei

Use the watch settings app to disable sensors for strava

swipe down from watch face then hit rightmost icon (gear cogs)

    Apps->Strava->Permissions->Sensors

This will disable all watch sensors for strava which means Strava won't use the watch gps either but it should be able to use your phone gps still.  Obviously not a good fix if you want to use Strava on your watch without a phone connected.

  • To clarify my first post about when a watch gets strava HR support it seems to be when your WATCH gets upgraded to Wear 2.0. (Check settings ->about on the watch) not when the Android Wear App on your phone gets upgraded to v2.   Obvious in retro spect but not clear as the android app makes a big deal of being v2.

So you need to check with your watch manufacturer as to when they are releasing Watch 2.0 for your model of watch.  My Huawei Watch v1 was upgraded in early May '17.

  • @Gordon

I want to use it the old way: phone gps and ant+ hr strap connected to the phone (my watch doesnt have a gps anyway, and the watch hr sensor is pretty bad).

Disabling acess to the sensors on the watch just made it stop using its internal hr sensor - the ant+ hr strap still not used, only the phone gps data.

All i wanted is to "reflect" the data that is been collected on the phone, the way the app used to work :/

  • @Dionei Same request here. With old wear app, I was able to see HR and per km split times. Now missing both of these. Using Ant+ hr strap as well

  • @Michal I gave up and started using Ghostracer.

It works as the old Strava app (its better to be honest, its possible to chose wich fields to show in every screen), works with Ant+ straps, uploads to Strava and its only a few bucks  (in the pro version, can be used free with restrictions).

Its so far the best option i've found for this kind of setup.

  • I have a Huawei watch that runs Wear 2.0. Does the Strava Wear app constantly use the heart rate sensor? I tend to have long rides sometimes (8+ hours) and would like the HR to be sampling rather than constant. This would consume the battery less.

  • @arnold which version of the Huawei Watch do you have?

My watch v1 only samples every 5 mins or so.  It also fails to log a strava reading over 99bpm but that's another story.

id love to get continuous heart rate :)

  • I have a watch v1.

@gordon you are right, the heart rate reported in Strava seems to have low sampling. For one ride (of an hour), it seems to have recorded only one heart rate. I don't know if this is an issue with Strava or the Huawei Watch.

This is my ride from yesterday, whose HR cannot possibly be correct.

  • I as well have a Huawei watch 2 with AW 2.0.  I noticed when using the training plans it would notify me to "slow down" based on the target heart rate levels being high, crazy high.  It got to the point where I was running so slow i would have to walk in order to try to get heart rate measurements lower.  I knew something was not right - there was no way my heart was working in the 180's at a 12 min pace.

I purchased a TickR and was able to use Runtastic since it had the option to connect to a 3rd party monitor on Android Wear rather than using the heart rate sensor on the Watch 2.  During a 2 mile easy run at 9:30 pace my average heart rate on the chest strap was 142 vs. the Huawei Watch at 166.  The chest strap did not have me going past 154 bpm while the watch tagged me at a max of 192 bpm.  The difference is significant.

Runtastic has the capability to use 3rd party HRM, I am hoping Strava can do the same soon.

  • The Android Wear app needs to be swap-able from Standalone to Mirror mode.  Either just use the watch as its own recording device (standalone) or show what your phone is recording through all its connected devices (mirror).

AT the moment I am having to use Ghostracer to record activities so that I can see what the Ant+ devices are recording on my Hwatch.  Currently the Strava app on my Hwatch won't show me my Ant+ Heartrate strap or cadence/speed sensor.

  • I have been using Strava on android wear 2.0 for a couple of months now, using a Huawai watch 2.

I'm really disappointed by it - the app keeps pausing even though I have auto pause turned off, and I keep getting big gaps in my GPS data.  If I use the Huawai fit app I do not see this issue (although Huawai fit is useless as I cannot export my data).

Is Strava aware of these issues?  I can provide a link to the activities if necessary.

I really want this to work, standalone Strava GPS and HR tracking is the reason I bought the watch in the first place.

  • My thoughts on the Android Wear 2.0 Strava App.

I have used the Garmin Forerunner 220 for 3 years and have loved it. I can configure all the metrics I want to see on 2 data screens.

I bought the New Balance RunIQ watch impulsively because I got it for a very good price. Decided to use the strava app over the New Balance run app. GPS data seems inconsistent, sometimes its very similar to my Garmin (which doesn't have GLONAS) and other times it looks like it just would rather make stuff up.

As far as what I see during my run, I'm extremely disappointed. The Garmins have always had CONFIGURABLE metrics and multiple metrics per screen. I find it odd that Strava would only have Distance/BPM/Average Pace/Splits/Laps on scrollable screens (hard with a sweaty finger I might add). There is a lot of real estate to split up at the very least 3 metrics on a single screen.

I also find huge benefits in seeing my LAP PACE, I don't much care about Average Pace across the run while I'm running, I like to manage my pace per lap, which brings me to my next thought.

Unless I missed a setting somewhere (and I've looked at all of them) I cannot see if there is an  'Auto-Lap' setting. On the garmin side, you can set a lap to whatever you want and once you hit that, it laps for you and resets the lap metrics. Why is Strava not doing this? Lap Time/Lap Distance/Lap Pace should be immediately available to me WHILE during my activity. All of the data is in, it just needs to be displayed.

I also cannot stress enough how beneficial runners find multiple metrics per screen, limit the amount of scrolling I have to do while running, otherwise it jacks up cadence and whatnot and I could run into a tree :)

  • I've been using the Garmin Vivoactive watch for sometime now which uploads my workouts directly to Strava. Having recently bought the Tag Connected Android Wear 2 watch, I tried to use this as a replacement via the Strava app. It is very poor. GPS continually cuts out or fails to record and there are no segments recorded. I'm heading back to the Vivoactive for my Strava needs as it is efficient and reliable.

  • Add me to the list of people who want the app to have the option of working the old way (Mirror).  I have a wear 2.0 watch but it doesn't have built in GPS or HR, and nor do I want to spend that cash when I have a setup which can already get the GPS and HR (via a BT/Ant+ sensor) data on my phone.

I was pleased when I got my watch to see that the Strava app would start recording with the app on my phone, then I upgraded the watch to Wear 2.0 and now I basically can't make any decent use of the app at all.

Very disappointed. I understand the drive towards the option of not having to take your phone with you on a run/ride, but what about those of us who don't mind doing that?

  • I agree with Paul and others.  When I realized that the only use of Strava on Wear 2.0 was standalone without any integration with the phone app, I sent the Wear device back.  I just couldn't see the point of another 250-400 EUR device that added no extra value and in fact took value away.

  •  So so so disappointing. Strava on my Huawaei Watch 2 measures about 10% short compared to Strava on my phone or my Garmin vivoactive. The Huawaei workout app records pretty much identical distances to Strava on the phone so at least I know the hardware is ok.

Surely GPS accuracy is the first thing any tracking app must get right?

  • Hello.

I have a TicWatch S and I'm running it with the Strava app. I'm so happy too. However, I would not want to have a feedback function that would be useful to me e.g. via audio or vibration signals that I ran a kilometer, or 10 minutes, etc. This fun action would round off the Strava app for me well. Please provide :-)

  • Hello Strava,
I'm using the Android Wear Strava app on my Huawei Watch 2 for the last few months, and it works very well with built in GPS, and mobile data.

@Dan H. I'm not experiencing that on my HW2. All seems very solid GPS data.

During race days, i don't like having to rotate through the 5 or so different screens to see the data i need i.e. -
Time, Average speed/pace, Distance, Heart rate, Run splits, Laps

I really think a 'custom' or a 'detailed' screen for Android Wear would be hugely beneficial, as most really don't want to touch the watch during race days to get the data I need. A simple details screen, showing some combination of the above would be superb.

As @Dionei M. mentioned, the ability to customise the metrics like Ghostracer or Garmin devices would be great, like so:

    Thanks,
    Darren.

  • @Darren McEntee the GPS data has improved recently - it no longer drops out - I think it must have had an update. However I now see a bug where the screen goes black when running strava sometimes. The watch is still running, as when I get home if I restart the watch it has saved all the route, but when the screen goes black I can't get it back on without restarting. Only happens with strava.

    Using Huawei watch  (v1).
    Not getting the heart rate monitor;
    Not getting Laps info;

  • Happily using Strava on my Wear OS 2.0 wach for quote some time now. For me the only thing that’s missing are audio announcements evry km.

So Strava team, please add Audio announcements to the Wear OS app 🙏

  • I don't know if any of the Strava wear app developers read this thread... But I see requests for audio announcement from 1,5 or even 4 years ago and I'm truely dissapointed it's still missing... I must switched to MyRunningApp, it's great solution.
