New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • As a Watch Series 1 user, it seems like I may not be able to use Strava anymore. Yesterday, my run was forced to be discarded because it "couldn't detect a change in my location," despite showing me the information I expected to see on my run (that is: mileage matched what I expected, time was right; it wasn't at 00:00 0mi or anything). Today, I told my phone to record the run instead. Which means I couldn't see my info on my wrist, and I guess also means I don't get access to heartbeat info anymore? Audio cues, also a big thing for me, are only available on my phone, so if I go back to the watch once whatever that bug was yesterday is fixed, I'll lose that.

I get that you're trying to support the new tech, but I really wish that the paired functionality were still an option. It seems like there's no other way to get all the benefits I used to get from Strava. I have a Premium Membership, but I probably won't for much longer if this continues to be the state of things. It just doesn't … work, for me.

  • I am so disappointed with this update as Apple Watch users. As many and many cyclist I am using my iPhone mounted to my bike. With premium account I was using display as cyclometr. Speed, distance and map. I also like the beacon app. My watch was measuring the heart rate.

What should I do now? Choose between iPhone or watch? Then you need to miss something.

Please, listen to your customers and bring some option back. I am not paying for premium acccount anymore and thinking about abondoning the app. Very sad so.

    Make Strava great again! ;)

  • Hi,

I'm enjoying Strava on Apple Watch Series 2 since two weeks. Really a nice job from Strava.

    Just two comments to add:

Heartbeat measuring seems not so reliable as other sources. I was using Mio Link on Garmin Forerunner before buying the Apple Watch, and data collected to Strava used to look more accurate before than now. Now the data is more flat.

Track data looks a little bit more random from Strava than Workouts App. I think that simply need a little processment to reduce error before saving.

Thank you Strava for making this app so great and useful.

    Regards,

  • Hey Martin, yes, I've gone back to just using the iPhone and not knowing what's going on or getting any heart rate. I will always choose the accuracy, battery life, and reliability of the phone over my AW2.

  • The reliability of the heart-rate data collected on the AW still seems very low, the readings seem to be taken very infrequently and then repeated, example of this here; https://www.strava.com/activities/938715851/analysis

Could this be improved? Without more regular readings it essentially is useless info and really messes up the suffer scores.

The ability to record from my other bluetooth sensors is also sorely missed, please add this back. Generally the lack of association between watch and phone is a pain and makes no sense for series 1 AW owners who must have the phone with them anyway.

Generally this release has been a big step backwards.

  • I recently switched to RunKeeper for my run tracking with an apple watch. You should copy what they have done. On the watch they have a setting for Watch Only or Watch + Phone. This allows it to work as it did prior to the last update when you do have your phone with you. Segments, live, and audio are all feature sorely missed. I know the audio is being worked on but it only solves one part of the issue.

Any thoughts to working this way?

I canceled my Strava Premium but will be back if the apple watch is fixed properly.

  • As a road cyclist, AW2 and iPhone 7+ user, I'm also disappointed in the latest Strava updates.

All I want is accurate distance, speed, mapping coupled with my heart rate. With Strava's current software, I cannot have all those pieces of data together. I can either use my phone for accurate distance, speed, mapping - but no HR. Or use my AW2 and get HR, but distance is inaccurate - and sometimes rides don't upload at all.

I have 3 use cases and results to share:

    1. Vineyard Bike Tour in Spain: I was excited to have just gotten my AW2 knowing that Strava would work on my watch without my iPhone (phone was in airplane mode since I didn't want to pay international roaming rates). I thought it'd be nice to have our route through the Spanish countryside mapped for posterity. I started the app on my AW2 and rode all day. At the end, I finished and saved the ride on the AW2. When I returned to our AirBnb with wifi, I switched my iPhone 7+ out of airplane mode. The ride never uploaded. No error messages, nothing. It was as if I'd never done the ride. To this day, I don't have that ride data or the map to go along with it.

    2. April 6 Group Road Ride: A 33.5 mile ride is logged only as 32 miles. Strava initiated on AW2.

    3. April 11 Group Road Ride: A 33.5 mile ride is logged only as 28.1 miles. Strava initiated on AW2.

  • I raced the Vale of York 10 at the weekend and have to say that the accuracy was spot on... to the minute, only 7 seconds off the chip time and distance matched perfectly.

  • I'm sure you're sick of hearing it (although not enough to actually fix it) but as a cyclist and premium subscriber I NEED the tether. I see you've added photos to notifications (kinda low on a list really).

I want to see the live segments to help me improve myself. However, I cannot have this as I have just found out that my cycling activity only counts with Vitality Healthcare Benefits WITH HEART RATE DATA.

So, I'm now in one hell of a predicament. Premium and Strava has now become DETRIMENTAL to my exercise routine.

I'm going to have to just use the Apple app instead, which I'm sure will do just a good as job as the free Strava (if not better, at recording).

I really do hope you see fit to care about your paying users at some point, at which time I shall gladly return as a paying customer.

Thanks again for ruining a great app and great experience. And hope you don't feel the negative impact of haemorrhaging subs too harshly.

  • Apple Watch Series 1.  Like others I would like to seee average speed for cycling.  Also, the screen goes nearly dark during auto-pause.  This means when I stop I can't see my progress, especially in sunlight. This may be for battery saving but makes it very difficult to track progress.  I would like to see ability to see progress in iPhone app while riding.  I think commenters here are calling that tethering, agree with those comments.

  • I'll add my voice to the chorus. I am rating the new Strava app one star and am rethinking my Premium Subscription. I mean it's terrible.

As a cyclist, I want to have the option of using my phone for maps and segments. The average speed and extra data on the watch was great. Now all that's gone. Or my heart rate is gone. That sucks.

As a runner, I want to have audible mile stats. Since Apple still doesn't have a way to play podcasts on the Watch, the audible alerts will need to come off the iPhone.

It'd be nice to not bring my phone, but it's not essential. And of course there are plenty of Apple Watch 1 owners who do not need the untethered feature (heck they are still making those watches!)

I have a simple solution. Create two Strava apps, Strava Classic and Strava Untethered, with two watch apps. Yes, support costs will be higher, but maybe you only need this during a transition period until you figure out how to make a watch app with appropriate functionality.

Please Strava, FOCUS. It's important. FOCUS on what your users want, not on what you THINK they want.

  • Went for a 10K run this morning.  For some reason the run hasn't uploaded from the watch to my phone.  I did another small run hoping it might push it along, but that run has appeared and the 10K run has vanished into the ether.  With no way to force re-upload the run, this has pretty much finished using the Strava app on AW2 for me.  Very annoyed.

    Great comment.

Even easier, hire Motifit to fix the problem! They have it figured out and only downside with that app is you can't see a live map and miles is on the watch not the iPhone.

I dont think anyone at Strava is listening though. As a customer evangelist by profession, I suggest Strava start listening to us or we won't be around to listen to. Silence is the most dangerous customer feedback.

    please stop ignoring us!

  • Excuse me. Probably I'm going to say something obvious.

I think that your app requirements to bikers and runners are so different that we need two different apps.

Strava Run, unpaired from the iPhone, as it is now with some improvements.
Strava Bike, paired to the iPhone, more similar to the app it was before the upgrade.

    Have you considered this option?

  • Hope devs are still reading this, and it may have been mentioned before, but on the 42mm watch the left most column (possible two columns) of pixels is cut off and slices off the left most portion of the numbers for elapsed time and distance.  It also cuts off part of the "A" in "Auto-Pause" under settings.  It is as if the app is not properly centered on the watch face.

Also there's a weird artifact on the stop, resume, and finish buttons where the circle has an extra couple of pixels on the left edge

  • Here's what's coming up on our roadmap:

    •      - An Apple Watch complication will be released soon.
    •      - Next, we'll bring audio announcements back to the Apple Watch experience, coded directly into the watch app.
    •      - After that, we'll work on the ability to discard an activity from the watch, a better summary after finishing the activity, and adding average speed to display.
    •      - Later on in the summer, we'll work to make Beacon a part of the Apple Watch experience. The Beacon signal will be broadcast through the phone's data which means you'd have to take your phone with you.
    •      - We are also conducting research into the use-cases where cyclists are recording cadence and/or power data along with the heart rate from their apple watch, and/or using the phone as a second display, both of which aren't possible after the recent update. We hope the research will inform how we move forward on this.

Live segment notifications aren't planned to return to the Apple Watch experience at this time, but can be reconsidered based on your feedback.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

Also please note, that to support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2, we redesigned the recording experience to work separately from the phone. This means that we can no longer support the way the phone app and the watch app previously connected. Even if your watch still uses the GPS from the phone, the recording experience is the same as with the Series 2: the app functions independently on the watch.

  • Apparently the devs edited the comment an hour ago, so they're reading that at least.

And they aren't listening to their users.

So I'll speak the language they can understand.

1 star ratings and no more premium until they show that they care about their users.

You'd think, in this day and age, that companies would get that the user experience is important. I just read an article about Valve, the game developer, in which people in the company constantly ask themselves "What do users think."

But then there are companies like United, who don't seem to care about user experience. Apple too, as they've shifted from thinking about what users think to thinking they know what users want.

Sadly, it's becoming clear where Strava falls on this.

I've stated what would make sense to users. Santi Gutierrez succinctly stated basically the same thing two posts up.

    Strava devs, please listen.

  • Went for a ride today and the app kept pausing and resuming, where in the past i had no issues in the area where it happened. I have a first generation apple watch and really liked the feature of the heart rate monitor last year. The update that was brought for the second generation does not bring all the goods for me. Strava needs to bring the features that people really want, i cannot connect my wahoo blue sc with the apple watch to use all the features. Bring back the heart rate monitor!!!!!!!

  • Finally an announcement from Strava on what's happening!

On the up side, they're listening

On the down side it won't be as good as it was before???

    I'm done.

Loving Motifit and am now sticking with it.

  • I don't think you're getting how the 'average runner' would like to use Strava.

    • I bring my iPhone and earbuds with me to listen to music/podcasts while I run (it is also for security in case I or someone else needs help).
    • I use a separate cadence app when training.
    • I like audio announcements to tell me how far I've run and my current pace, so I can adjust my effort to match training goals.
    • Live segments are fun and motivating.

If I have to bring my iPhone with me for GPS data, then surely a tethering model will allow me to use my Apple Watch as a second screen to access a fully featured, premium Strava experience.

  • Elle - thank you for the recent update (Apr 15 02:50). This is extremely disappointing. You are wasting development resources on things, which matter less to your user base, and not giving any priority to reestablishing the AW / iPhone tethering method. This is VERY disappointing :-(

Seriously, "conducting research". I think this thread alone is all the research you need. Possibly also looking at your sub revenues too.

Cyclists WITH watches (especially PREMIUM) don't see the benefit in being untethered. Just stop procrastinating and FIX THIS DREADFUL MISTAKE!

  • Been using Strava app with Series 2 Apple Watch since end of last year.. has worked fine.., but then today it completely lost a ride that I just did.. Finished the ride.. pressed save .. and it's not appeared on my dashboard.. didn't know about untethered thing as I always have my phone with me (but never look at it when on the bike).  Anyway, mightily peed off as it was a new ride (and a big one)...

  • This is such a mess. The Apple Watch simply DOES NOT WORK INDEPENDENTLY OF THE iPHONE! Please please please bring back the option to keep the strava Apple Watch app and iPhone app teathered. If I hadn't managed to downgrade to version 5.12.0 I would have no option but to find another app to track my runs. It used to work so well, now it is utterly useless. Strava, PLEASE READ THIS THREAD AND DO WHAT YOUR APPLE WATCH USERS WANT!

I love strava, but you have really messed up here. =[

  • When i run using the strava app the calorie data is still way off, are you looking into this? I used to have a garmin 235 so i now how many calories i burn per mile, about 90. Strava has me burning nearly 500 on a 5k run. That is way off.

  • I'm debating switching from Nike Run club app to Strava for running.  My preference is to start the run on my phone with the Nike App, and then I love that I can see the status on my watch -- even thought I started the workout on my phone.

Is that something that can happen with Strava?

Thanks and sorry if this has already been discussed!

  • I've moved back to RunKeeper and will let my premium lapse.

Sad to see such poor community relations here, and frankly very surprised as I thought Strava had the "inside" line on what serious runners wanted.

Strava folks—most of us don't want to leave our phones behind—we run at night, or miles from home, or want to be connected for safety still—we simply want our watches for convenient display and control. When RunKeeper does already what you seem to have having an impossible time doing, it does nothing for your credibility.

  • Hey all, I've found a solution that can be used by some people. I'll simply say, google search for "app admin" + "ios 10". You'll be able to discover what this little gem can do as well as what needs to be done to get the functionality required.

    I'm now happily using 5.12.0.

To Jacob Board, strava version 5.12.0 can do what you've requested, versions after that cannot - I guess it was a management decision.
