New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • How do I get back the old functionality of starting on my phone and viewing on the watch?

Now if I start on the phone, the only option I have on the watch is to start another one.  If a session is started on either the phone or watch, the other device should be able to pick up the same session.

  • Using the first series Apple Watch I used to send my safety beacon text from my phone and start the run from my watch. Just tried it this morning and the safety beacon was saying there was no recent activity. So much for paying for premium anymore.

Also no more voice cues for auto pause or mile splits.

Seems like a step backwards to have the apps not talk to each other anymore for people who still run with their phones.

  • I need to echo what Mark Cameron, Nathan Morey and others said - I still have the original Apple Watch, and the separation between the watch app and the phone app is a real step backward. I now have to choose between heart rate data (requiring a start on the watch) and several features only supported by the phone app (audio cues, seeing your intended route on the map, setting a name as you save it, picking what shoe you wore as you save it).

It seems like the workaround is to start the run using the app on the phone, THEN also hit the start button on the watch in order to get it to show me the running stats while I'm running.  But I still don't get heart rate data in this case.

I get why you separated the two apps for Apple Watch Series 2 users and use without a phone, but you have significantly damaged the user experience for the rest of us.

  • SUMMARY: This update breaks functionality and makes me sad, especially as a premium user as I now can not analyze data I upgraded for.

WHY: I have Apple Watch series 1, but I suspect series 2 would also have this problem: I always used it like this:

    1. Mount iPhone to the bike (or put in bag/back pocket, etc.), which is connected to power, cadence, etc. (but not heart rate) & open strava (but don't start it).

    2. Open Strava on AW and start a ride.

The behavior was that both the AW and the phone would start recording, with the AW tracking heart rate and the phone tracking power, cadence, (& GPS). When saving the ride at the end (from either AW or iPhone), all data was uploaded together (heart rate, power, cadence, etc.)

Instead, it seems to be broken. I either have to start a ride on the AW and only get heart rate data (defeating the purpose of a power meter, etc.), or start it only on the iPhone, defeating the purpose of the AW and get no heart rate data. Since this update is for the AW, defeating the purpose of the AW was probably not the goal.

WORKAROUNDS? NOPE: I tried starting the AW and iPhone independently, but instead I got two separate rides that say I rode "with one other." The data isn't linked, and I'll have to destroy one set so as not to post duplicate miles :(

  • Please please please put the watch and phone apps back in communication.  The watch needs the phone more than you allow for now.  The watch would provide audio queues when listening to music through headphones and you get distance and pace alerts on the watch.  Why would you take this away from us?  If not returned, will need to look elsewhere.

  • Hi, I was sooo looking forward to this release...but then it doesn't seem to work. It hangs on the start screen, I have tried this three times now and have to give up and use the native activity app. Which I can't sync as it duplicates in health and screws the data (I know this is a known issue). Any ideas on why it is hanging? Is it because it is looking for GPS?

    Thanks

  • I'd like to echo comments from the cyclists above. With the new release I was looking forwards to a more integrated experience between Watch and iPhone, whereby the various sensor information and displays compliment each other. As a premium user, the iPhone app could replace a separate bike computer, and the Watch heartrate monitor should negate the need for a separate strap.

However, I now find myself reverting to a chest strap, and ignoring the Watch during rides. Was this the intent for the new version?

  • Hi Elle,

I have an Apple Watch Series One, and this update was automatically pushed to my iPhone & watch, so I now have a little issue, actually as its losing track of distance a big issue. I used to be able to start Strava on the watch, check everything as I went (heart rate recording), at the end of the ride I'd open Strava on the iPhone, change ride name, change to correct bike, add photo, add other info etc, then finish & upload. I cannot do this anymore, the phone is locked out from that current ride, it does not show I have one in progress, even to the point I can start Strava on my watch and another on my iPhone! I understand this is how it is supposed to work for Apple Watch series 2 but surely that is not the intention for the Series 1 as they have to be tethered to work? I also lost 3k's ride length this morning, I know this as I have done the same ride twice a week for 5 years, and my wife was using Strava (no Apple Watch) beside me all the way. Not particulary happy, please can you clarify if this change is correct and is meant to work this way now.

    best regards

    Luke

  • One more thing I noticed after my second ride today - the estimated average power, estimated power output, and calories all seem to be calculated differently than they used to be. Below are two nearly identical rides, one recorded a couple weeks ago using the iPhone app (started from the Watch), and one recorded today using the new Apple Watch app. I used the same equipment and my heart rate and speed are roughly similar, but the calculations are very different - in fact they're lower by more than 35%!

  • So, for anyone with the original Apple Watch or need to integrate watch data (HR) with other bluetooth sensor data (cadence, power) or use beacon or other premium features, this release is a major loose-loose. Is there any way to turn it off?

I understand that runners and swimmers (eventually) would prefer a stand-alone Watch app, but most cyclists would probably be better served by just being able to pull Watch HR data into the iPhone app. Any way to do that?

  • Thanks to the Strava team for the standalone Apple SW2 app..

I had given a try.. It on dot the distance/pace  (accurate than the Runkeeper)...

Still this a very basic APP. would be happy to see following in the future update.

    • Average speed (changeable with a touch run keeper does it).
    • GPS signal indicator.
    • A better summary at the end of the activity.

  • hello

Great job ... Thanks to the strava team

Could you add the average speed on the screen of the apple watch during the workout ?

It is an important information for the runner ;-)

Thanks a lot for this new developpment

  • Thanks, great progress.

However, I am missing a few items:

    - A watch face complication would be very nice, to start it immediately

    - It used to show accumulated weekly progress - now it doesn't

    - As I use the watch for heart rate and phone for power/cadence from the crank sensor - I need the option to still ride in sync between the watch and phone

  • I have an Apple Watch 1 so can't use the GPS on the watch so this update is of no extra benefit. In fact it has made it worse as I now have no audio announcements if I use the watch app. Please bring back the audio announcements when you start a run from the watch along with the audio splits. Otherwise you have made my watch redundant and I would be forced to start and stop my run from the phone just to get the announcements. A very poor update without this feature.

  • Really disappointed with the update! No longer any audio feedback via my phone when I start a run on my watch app. Is there any way around this?? The whole point of using my watch was so I didn't have to mess about with getting my phone in and out of my pocket while running!! 😬😬😬

  • I gave the new Strava standalone a try on Apple Watch 2.

I think, for me personally, I'd REALLY like to be able to look down at my watch and see my average pace.  It's a huge bummer that it seems the only app that actually gives you the ability to see average pace on the watch face is the native Workout app. Add that, and I'd be using this app exclusively.

  • Hey Elle,

The only thing I missed was the voiceover. It would be great to hear alerts for start, km, finish..

  • Tried the new app yesterday and spot checking pace looked all good as did total distance (spot on).

I really hope you intend to build on this basic version and adding more functionality. To me I run using three metrics, hearth rate, pace and cadence so would like to see the cadance added.

Then for the pace it would be great to select averages (3s, 5s, 30s or last 1km).

Hope this is more of a POC and a more full featured version will be released soon.

  • M first run with the AW2 + Strava standalone:

    • No audio cues when Watch set to km.
    • Auto-pause too sensitive - looked at AW2 when I knew I hit 1km but the app paused even though I was still running.
    • No pace on the screen.

  • Can't believe how poor the "new" updated app is. Basics are missing. No audio feedback, no comma between iPhone and watch if you so wanted. Other apps seem to be making decent inroads into their respective AW2 apps. Time to quit my premium membership me thinks

  • Hello,

Thank you for all your hard work in releasing this app. I can only imagine how much time went into it.

I recently became a Premium member because I find the app greatly useful, motivating and a powerful tool.

I see it's been commented before, but I would like to echo 2 concerns I have with the new update:

    1. No audio cues while using the AW2 Strava app. Having audio cues on my BT headphone is a huge asset while I run.

    2. I could use my iPhone for audio cues, but with the new app, the AW2 and iPhone don't sync. So, if I want audio cues from my iPhone I can't see my pace, distance run, time, etc. on my AW2 which is on my rist because they don't sync.

Now, I don't know what to do or use. Can I uninstall the new update and use the older version until this is fixed?

    Thanks,

    J.

  • This release ruined Strava for cyclists with the original Apple Watch. With the iOS app completed decoupled from the watch app, I now can use one or the other. Obviously I can't use the watch app because it has no GPS or connection to bike cadence sensor. Though I could use the iOS app instead, I no longer have the heart rate info from the watch. The only solution appears to be buying and wearing a dedicated heart rate sensor.

Or is it time to ditch Strava and my premium subscription and use something else? I like Strava, but I don't love it. And dumping untested software like this makes me like it less.

Let's say Strava actually pays attention and eventually reverts this update or provides a real fix. In the interim, is there another solution I could use which would allow me to import GPS, cadence, and heart rate data into Strava later?

  • Well I used the app for my 4.5mi run this morning. My Bluetooth HR device worked good. I did fartleks to see how fast the HR and time would update. Disappointed in the pace as it was slow to avg out. I was trying to pace my self to get a good feel. Wish there were more options as what to display.

The GPS tracked good and was about as good as any I've seen and it started and stopped in the right location.

    Issues:

    1. Even though the app tracked and synced to Apple Activity app the correct data, I went into Health App and saw that Strava had doubled my entries. Only one showed in Activity app because they were the same time.

    2. I have Strava set to sync with Health, but when I went to MFP it did not sync my data. I have Health setup up with MFP so whatever goes to Health should sync to MFP. This keep other apps from sending duplicates to MFP via the source apps. Runkeeper works fine as it syncs to Health and Health syncs to MFP.

I enabled MFP in Strava to see if it would sync to MFP with the source app. I did a test on the phone app and on the watch app and both synced to MFP. So there is an issue with the data being fed from Health to MFP when it comes from Strava. The workout I did with the Apple Workout app synced to MFP no problem. I've tested multiple apps so this is not an Apple issue in my opinion. It's how the data is sent from Strava to Health that is the issue.

Overall is was decent. I really want to ditch RK and use Strava, but I'm not completed sold yet. It did sync my metrics which was nice and also to RunGap. RK gives me the option for my Bootcamp training, so unless I just track it as a run in Strava I will still need to use both apps. I torn as Strava needs more UI development and functionality for me to use is alone.

  • To start. Gps was spot on! So thank you. In future upgrades (hopefully sooner rather than later) would like to see average mile pace, audible mile/Taptic, would like to see a brief pop up with last mile times as well (like the AW2 native app does), hard press lock screen, miles in tenths, customizable screen.

Also, quick question. Is HR data being pulled from Watch only? How do you know where data is being pulled from if you also have a blue tooth HR strap on?

    Thx

  • Please find a way to restore the ability to have stats of a current run or ride show up for non-GPS watches.  I totally get the separation for Series 2, but it was and is a really nice feature to be able to track a workout simultaneously on my watch and phone while working out.

  • Sorry guys this version is a complete fail for cyclists.

You should rename this new version Strava run for which it's suitable and am sure appreciated by people who only run, but for a cyclists it's a fail.

Use phone and have cadence and phone screen but lose heart rate from Apple Watch OR

use watch and no cadence etc and no screen but get heart rate.

    Massive backwards steps

  • Thanks for pushing the update out!  Wanted to put in my vote for seemingly simple additional features needed to the app:

    1. Auto lap notifications - if not verbal then definitely taptic.
    2. Auto lap editing - it would be great to change the auto lap from 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile to mile to 5k.
    3. Manual lap entry - would be awesome if I could double tap the screen/press both side buttons to lock in a lap and start a new one.
    4. Ability to record a different workout using the app but no GPS, like weight training, etc.

I think I read above that the average pace during a run is the lap average pace.  If so, that is great, I really like that viewing option due to the variability of trying to see instantaneous pace.

  • Realy glad to hear this news. I had a short look at new Apple Watch S2 app and yes, it perfect, but ...

we need haptic response (choice 0,5km, 1km etc)

we need delete button after start app (exercise) accident (there is discard just in case of no moving)

we need swimming (new Apple Watch S2 are watterproof, and Strava have swimming log)

we need user settings of HUD (main screen durig excercise) For me example is dominant distance, not split time

Next feedback after using app on excercise ;)
