Fitness & Freshness: Training Impulse bug

I've noticed that Strava massively over-calculates "Training Impulse" if you do multiple activities in a day - you can do 2 very short & low effort activities one day which will have a massively greater combined training impulse than a much longer (in total) and higher effort single activity another day - which means the whole Fitness & Freshness graph is pretty useless - if like me you record the occasional dog walk alongside bike rides and also often do ~16 rides in a day when doing MTB uplift days...

  • I've noticed that too and have asked Strava support to explain.

Two sessions of Snowboarding each with a suffer score of 6 caused the Fitness and Freshness graph to give a suffer score of 61. Agreed bug must be sorted in order to restore trust in the Fitness numbers

  • Has strava got back to you on this? Just been doing a series of short low intensity rides planning out race courses for different age groups and it's given me the same training load as an actual day of cx racing, practicing and warming up etc

  • Nope - Strava seem to be ignoring this completely...

  • I'm having the same issue. My training impulse numbers for past bike rides have changed. A ride with a suffer score of 200 now has a training impulse of 11:P

  • Same issue. My standard commute of 17k has a trimp of 236 ?

  • Same here. My fitness and freshness chart shows a training impulse of 145 for a day with two short bike commutes and a short hike (relative efforts for each activity were 1, 4, and 7 respectively), yet a training ride with a relative effort of 136 only shows a training impulse of 80 on the F&F chart.

  • I seem to have encountered a similar issue to everyone else. My fatigue attribution from my IDT sessions is far higher than an outdoor ride. Comparably a 1h10m /800kJ IDT session has a Training Impulse of 64 but a 2h55min /71km/ 1400kJ has a Training Impulse of 56.

I certainly feel a lot more fatigued after yesterdays ride yet the Fitness and Freshness graph has almost negated the outdoor effort.

My IDT is on a Kickr which has a Power meter and I'm not using HRM. My outdoor ride is on a HRM and not Power meter. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the algorithm and calculations.

    Something is off though.

  • Related (but possibly different) problem I encountered is that a short comute ride of just around 5 Relative Effort score is counted huge (~50) Training Impulse in Fittness & Freshnes.  This makes Fitness graph totally unreliable.

  • @Robin - I looked to see if you submitted a ticket and I don't see one related to this. I also don't see any recent activities on your Strava profile page to look into. Shoot our team a message and we can figure out what's going on with your Fitness and Freshness.

Have you all read through the Fitness & Freshness article we have posted here? It may give you a better idea of how it's calculated.

Of course, if you still have questions, please reach out!

  • I just did ~45 minutes on a treadmill desk at work and it registered a training impulse of 176!! Makes no sense at all when the FTP test I did yesterday only providing training impulse of 96.

  • I have been following my Fitness&Freshness score over the spring and realized the same effect what has been discussed here and it makes this functionality totally useless. If I do two short walks 10+20 min Training Impact is the same as in 111km semi tough ride (strava relative effort 131).

Also if is ride to work and back to home and have these two rides as one exersise in garmin (and in strava) training impulse is 106, but if I do have same rides as two separate activities in strava training impulse is 190!
