Apple Watch Series 2

Hi,

Have to ask the question, as Apple hinted that the GPS in the new watch will allow access to developers. Will Strava look at a native Apple Watch app which uses the GPS on the watch?

  • Thanks for the update though Elle. Hopefully it will be worth the wait. I'm not liking having to use the Nike running app for the time being

  • And hopefully everybody reads the statement from Elle and stops complaining that it doesn't work. We know that already... maybe the Mods can place the post from Elle on top of the topic ?

And like the Dutch say: now we wait !! ;-)

  • Yes, sorry Chris! We really do hope it's worth it too. Much hard work has been put in these last few months. We are already testing the beta around the office.

Thanks Fulco de Vente - I updated my post pinned to the top (1st page) of this discussion. I hope that helps clarify to avoid future confusion.

  • So Steven Warnett, how does one go about selecting their gear when using the watch app. I would think having simplified controls on the watch limits it capability of watch you can track. Do you add them later, etc.?

  •  i go running three times a week and  swimming three times  a week 3000 m each day, now  I use the native App apple watch but i miss my Garmin vivoactive in the swimming mode , while you are swimming the display is on all the time so you have instant access to your average pace,  distance, crono, bpm... you can even program an alarm with vibration every x meters, in addiction to this you can also stop the cronometer  just  by pushing one button.

the native app, block the apple watch 2 and is very difficult to see what  you are doing during the training , besides  this when you want to stop, first you have to unblock the watch and after this stop the cronometre, so it spends 6 or 7 second in this process.

if Strava wants to have a good app for swimmers you better copy  Garmin´s one.

good luck it´s not an easy task ;)

  • Pablo, you can press the digital crown + side button to pause/resume your current workout in the native Training.app

  • Guessing we'll see progress now that their collaboration with New Balance has made it to market --> http://www.newbalance.com/runiq/

All this time people are speculating that Apple and/or Nike may have been restricting Strava's access to the API and docs to give Nike Run Club a chance to take off but I think restrictions from New Balance wanting to steal people from Apple watch (and hampering strava progress there by tying them up with this partnership) is most likely the real cause for delays.

  • I'm dumbfounded that native GPS support is available on Strava for Android Wear 2 devices on DAY ONE whereas support for the Series 2 is still lacking nearly five months since release!  Apple Watch is the best selling smartwatch and yet we're treated as second class citizens by Strava!

Way to alienate your users!  It's not like we've not been patient.

  • I'm also on the beta. I can confirm what Steven wrote: It works - pretty well, actually. GPS track looks accurate, at least no worse than what my Forerunner 235 records.

Great relieve, if you ask me. Now if only Strava would also make use of the AW2's hardware buttons and lets us configure the watchface... then I could even sell my Garmin. Until then, I'll use the Garmin for "real" workouts - for anything else, the AW2 now suffices.

  • @Christoph P. and @Steven

Hi. What's data is in watchface? It shows the current pace or the current Km/Mile average pace? To run, the usefull data is the current Km/Mile average pace. And there are any reminder in each Km/Mile with the average pace of that Km/Mile?

    Thanks.

  • @ Matthew:
It was to be exprected.. see my post I wrote on January 27th 9:35am.
Actually I'm a little bit confused about NB RunIQ. It sounds so good and their marketing promotes the implementation of Strava on NB-Website and on their videos.
On the other side Strava doesn't even mention the watch with a singular word on its website as if they don't want ppl to know about it.
The watch is on the market since Feb. 2nd but strangely you can't find any reviews or hands-on on the net yet. And their support answered my question about integretion of strava live-segments with a "sure!" and a couple of hours later with a "no sorry, strava doesn't plan to implement it in this watch!".
Hello? A "NB-Strava-watch" without one of their key-features? Why?
Actually I'm asking myself where the differences are between the NB-watch and any other Android watch with the Strava-app. Are there any?

    @ Beta-testers
    Does the Strava-app give audiofeedbacks?

    @ Strava
If you still look for beta-testers I'd love to join. I go running 4x/week.

  • @Christoph: So does it work just like the current apple watch App expect no need for a phone? Meaning, start workout on Watch, see speed, distance, pulse. Come back and everything is already on Strava (gps-track, pulse-data and stats surrounding this) and also a Workout is loggez in the Health-app with the same data?
    Any difference in experience/features?

  • All I keep hearing from other standalone app devs, mainly Runkeeper who actually has an app, but seems to have issues every time I use it, is that Apple did not release the AW2 until the public knew about it. Pretty much putting all the developers behind the ball. Which given Apple and their "classified" ways wouldn't surprise me.

I talked with an Apple agent at HQ in CA that had been there 15 yrs and he said he has friends that work in development that used to be in support and he can't get anything out of them. They have a secured area where they code. He says he can't even provide customers real answers because he doesn't even know and they are one floor apart.

So if Apple is that restrictive with it's own internal ppl, I can image that other app devs are having to get in line like everyone else. So much for Apple working with thirdy-party companies. Even NRC is a subpar app and they got their name on the watch. They probably just paid Apple a couple hundred million for the endorsement. Apple is just a stuck up company that doesn't care about it's customers unless you buy into their whole "Apple everything" mentality.

I'm not sure if that's why Strava is behind, but after 5 months you would think that would have something by now. It's a watch app, how complex does it have to be?!?!
