Athlete Search by location or region

Strava used to allow one to do the athlete search function by location.  I was able to enter a city or place name and get a list of athletes registered in that area.  Now the search function only appears to allow for an athlete search by the name of the athlete.  I would suggest going back to the old way, so that I/we could periodically check to see if any of my riding buddies have finally signed up for Strava.

  • Hi strave guys, thanks for doing a good job, BUT,  please would tell us why the geographical athlete search is no longer available, I am currently looking for an Andy Smith who I know personally and who lives less than a mile away from me, so why do I have to search through the other 1000 or so Andy Smith's all around the world before I find the one living next door!  it just seems crazy when you have all the information to be able to list all search results geographically according to the search location, why don't you do it!!!

  • I agree with Jeremy. While I'm not looking for Andy Smith (though I'm sure he's a great guy) - I would like to search for athletes in my town. I used to be able to do this before.

  • Me too. Why the backward step?

  • Me too, was just going to have a whine about this. One of the great things about Strava was this ability, I found some new ride buddies from it for sure. If you can't do this the social side is lost.

  • I am with everyone above. It is very difficult to find anyone that I am attempting to connect with.  In addition to my diappointment in not being able to search for an athlete by location, I have also found that certain athletes are not popping up under my search results... PERIOD!  I will type in a person's name for which I have double checked the spelling, and nothing comes up. Furthermore, the person trying to find me claims he is also having the same troubles.

    Dear Strava,

Please fix this function as soon as possible.  As noting in Rusty Sprocket's post above, why the backward step?

  • I just met a guy on a ride this morning called Fergus. We chatted for 10 miles and I thought I would try and find him of Strava, Well the search is next to useless. I not looking for people in USA or Australia, just Devon UK. You should at least be able to do a search like "Fergus" + "Location:Devon" or similar. Pretty basic stuff really! Hope you can fix it soon.

  • Any news when it will be possible again to search by location? in my case I don't know people in my area by name I would like to search athletes who run in the same areas so I can compare my results.

  • I agree with all above. It's infuriating to meet someone on the road who says they are on Strava but not be able to find them

  • I like the way other sites like Athlinks shows pictures of other athletes in my area.  Sometimes I recognize them and can link up.

  • It seems I have joined Strava after they changed this and was crying about this lack of ability. I do not have any friends that ride, but yet I would love to follow some people that live around me and to see how I compete to riders in similar conditions. At the moment Strava makes this impossible. Therefore it would just be great if there was a possibility to search for athletes near by, i.g. within a field of 50km.

  • At the present time (July 2, 2014), I would be happy if the search work AT ALL.  I have searched for someone by full name (several case-sensitive derivations), last name only, last name/first initial and all found nothing.  Only by the other person following me, was I able to follow them.

  • To add more fuel to the fire:  As everyone above has stated, I am looking for is a list of athletes in a particular region with my level of training.   I know you have the search icon at the top of all Strava pages.  So... maybe along with the “Athletes, Activities, Clubs and Segments” pull down box, you could add a "global search" of cyclist/runners by towns/country.  Allow us to enter the sport, country, then region or town... thus bringing up a LIST of athletes in a particular area. Although not necessary, I would like to find athletes that have the same (limited) ability as me. So, maybe allow us to filter the resulting list by miles per week or even their position in the MTS/Challenges.

By the way, I use the computer, and have no use for Apps, Facebook or any social media.  So please make this as low level friendly as possible!

  • it would sure be awesomeness if you would sort the results of an athlete (or segment) search based on the distance the person (or segment) is from the city that i show i live in. It's crazy to try to search for a friend ( or a segment name ) and have the person i'm looking for on page 20 of the results while some guy from half way around the planet is first in the list.
Seems easy to do since you know the city we list as our home ( not to mention the lat/lng of our exclusion zone )
    Thanks for considering.

  • I agree. This was a massive retrograde step for Strava. I've now no idea how people get started. Initially, you used to add a few friends, then you started looking to see where people in your area rode. If you went to a new area for a weekend, you had a look to see where people rode there, too. I'm not going to enter Dai Bloggs and hope there's one living in the mountains just south of Jakarta, am I? Now people seem to follow people by following followers of their friends - consequently I'm popular with (but hardly relevant to) several Brazilians.

Customer service suggested I used the Activity Search and adjusted the parameters. No dice, unless there's something I'm missing: my phone app feed shows me riders in Jakarta every day, the website activity search seems to contain mostly rides from 2010 - 2012.

I love using Strava and have found their customer service responsive and helpful - to the degree where I was starting to feel guilty that the free service was entirely sufficient for my needs. However... if they'd removed the ability to search by location after I'd paid, I'd have been absolutely apoplectic at my lack of control. The situation is, frankly, ludicrous. Still, if we haven't yet paid, I suppose we're all free to go back to Sports Tracker or wherever it was we came from...

Oh. And put back the monthly summary on the phone app, too... or at least let us choose.

  • Hi! How about being able to search for athlete by their first name (already avaial.) and then naturally sorted by distance from me?

For example, I search for athlete name Nikita and I want to sort out all Nikita who lives closest to me!  How come this feature was not implemented looong time ago?

  • I could just reiterate the exact same thing that everyone says, however I'm going to modify it slightly.

I would like to be able to search for people/rides that have a start/end point within a certain radius (of my choosing) of a given point.  It would mean that I could potentially find people who have similar ride distances to me, we could friend up through Strava and use each other for motivation and ride together.

At the moment I don't know anyone who starts rides near me who I could possibly join up with and ride together, all I know is that people ride past me through the segments, but no idea where they start/finish (generally, not specifically)

  • Did you drop the search by region as a security measure?  A better approach would be to set the default privacy zone to a 1 mile radius around the athletes address, and prompt new members to enter a home location at least near their real address (and tell them why).

I just met a fellow rider. I only know his first name (Jason) and that he lives in my area (Austin, TX). I entered his name in the Athlete search. There are 1805 pages of riders with that first name.  The first two athletes (runners, not riders) are in California, maybe 1800 miles away, third unknown, forth is in Australia.  None on the first page are even in Texas. This is useless!

  • I agree. Sorting search results by distance makes the most sense.

I hate having to sort through 50 people on the other side of the world, just to find a friend.

  • Does Strava ever respond to the community posts or do anything about them? I ended up here because I met a guy just started his run as I was finishing not even 200 metres from my place. I asked him if he was on Strava and got his name naively thinking that and our area is all I would need to find him so we could follow each others progress to some quite big goals. How wrong was I? STRAVA, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO US? DON'T FORGET WE ARE THE ONLY REASON FOR YOUR VERY EXISTENCE.

  • I mean yeah! Good point: I can read all of your guyses posts here without being logged in, but I can't find my neighbour here on Strava... So again we ask: "Dear Strava-Team, are you reading this?"

  • Such a pity that this organisation will not even give a reason for their current policy on athlete search, despite considerable interest from members on this subject for the last few years, so much for customer relations!

Strava is funded mostly by the contributions of it's premium members,  I have been one of these for several years and I feel that we deserve at least some response from the management to this long standing question.

I will not be renewing my premium membership this time around, and I urge other members to do the same, it's a shame it has come to this, but it seems it's going to be the only way we will make the Strava management put some effort into communicating with their membership.

  • Correction, geographic search works. Just write geographic location instead of athlete's name. It is full-text search, so it will search in location data in athletes profile also.
