Include Weather Conditions for Strava Activities

For the ridden route, pls include weather conditions for a segment when the riding took place

- Temperature

- wind direction

For example: In Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) makes the observations available for various areas. So when riding on a road that exists in an area covered by the BOM, then overlay the segments of the route with weather conditions at the time of the ride.

Similarly, you can overlay with a weather forecast for routes generated in My Routes.

Let me know if you want more info.

  • Wind direction and average wind speed would be great if included on your segments as it has a big effect on how you do time wise on flat segments and even hill climb segments. With a good tailwind you can shave seconds and even minutes on the longer segments compare to a neutral wind or slight breeze. Then I guess a wind filter will be required to compare your similar rides

  • Exactly.... that's why I think you need the weather info because the weather conditions do effect the times in some way, shape or form.

  • I was thinkng the same. Your PR could also be related to weather conditions. MTB riding in winter and summer is very different and you would like to compare your results for each weather condition.

An automatic weather conditions "prefilled" based on any weather site/app would be great. Editing it by hand to correct the localized conditions is awesome

  • Even just a simple temperature and sky on the ride page would be nice.  And then... we could have a badge for riding 25, 50, 100 days in the rain.

  • I manually add the temperature of my ride/run to the title, but it would be awesome if Strava could pull in general weather information automatically.  I know it gets difficult depending on the length of the ride, passing multiple areas or cities, or rides lasting multiple hours.  Maybe just a ride/run Min/Max temperature would work well.

  • My phone already knows what the weather is for my location. It would be a battery drain to monitor constantly, but sampling it every fifteen or thirty-minutes would be sufficient.

  • Just to clarify in response to Butch's comment... I think the expectation here is that Strava's servers would simply poll the historic weather on the weather server on the server end for the locations traveled during the run/ride after the fact and place the summary or average weather data on the activity.  No need for the phone to poll the weather sources directly.

  • I use the Day One app, that app also include the weather automatically. That would be very nice to have.

  • Great feedback! Thanks for adding your comments, and keep the votes and feedback coming. I agree this would be a great addition to Strava.

  • Yes. The temperature and humidity fluctuates greatly where I live--Tampa--and measuring performance requires considering these factors. Let us compare apples to apples, e.g., not compare our performance on a ride or run on a super humid, hot day to that of an ideal day. Etc. It seems easy to add an automatic weather input feature, drawing data from NOAA or the like. It would save me the time of inputting it manually and would enable better review. Another related suggestions: At a later point you could add a feature that allows users to compare performance on similar days, perhaps by clicking on the weather icon of a particular ride/run.

  • Also I had the same Idea, we live in very flat county in Holland. We call the wind Dutch Mountains!!! Also a lot of people over here are adding weather info to the title. Wind is to us what altitude is to others I guess.

  • it would help a lot to have at least temperature, I agree

  • It would be a great feature for weather data with activities.  Wind obviously obviously has a big effect on times for cycling and if you ride in rain, hail and gales you look much tougher and get more kudos. Ideally it would be automatically added from on-line weather data.

  • By recording the wind direction for a user's segment's time, Strava could include a "Wind Index", more positive if a strong wind correlates with the average direction of the segment. This would allow one to see the Leaderboard for a segment but also to weigh that against the wind direction when a particular time was set. A KOM set on a segment with a 30mph tailwind would be highlighted.

  • I explored the idea of some weather specific features in a blog post here: https://medium.com/ui-ux-articles/4257452ebc4f

Let me know what ya'll think -

  • Sportracks has an excellent plug-in which obtains wind data from local published weather data and then analyses this to provide a headwind/tailwind vector at each point along an activity and a graph of head/tail wind against distance/time. This is excellent for analysing how much assistance the wind has given on a ride and in my experience over many rides seems to be very accurate compared with my perception of the wind. Something similar in Strava would be an excellent addition. In addition it would also be useful in segments to provide a summary of the net head/tailwind effect over the segment. It is however important to show the detailed analysis of wind especially where a segment changes direction.

Strava please get your developers to go and play with and learn from the weather plugin on Sporttracks as although you will obviously want to do your own thing its been very carefully thought through and provides a really useful and mature tool with a useful balance between summary and detail.

  • This would be a great new feature! Weather Underground also has a robust API: http://www.wunderground.com/weather/api/d/docs?d=data/history

  • Agreed.

Garmin website does it but I'd rather Strava had it too as the overall experience on here is better.

  • @david koch similar but from weather.gov... http://w1.weather.gov/xml/current_obs/ - Can get the current weather from ZIP code given GPS coords and date/time stamp.

  • Will the new connectivity with Garmin allow this information to be pulled in automatically? If so that would be awesome. If not, why not?

  • I agree this would be a great feature to have. I have to use multiple apps to get all the data I want. It would be nice to have this built into Strava.

  • yeah wind information on segments would be great, eventually once the wind's magnitude and direction tis obtained from an external API the impact on the effort can be computed second by second given the know direction of the bike in that instant.

  • Colder temperatures = higher O2 density and v. versa.

Humidity and wind etc etc.... ambient weather, altitude... all would be really cool. You know all of this of course.

  • Relative humidity too.

  • Here is how Smashrun is doing it. "Smashrun looks at the midpoint of the run, searches for the nearest hourly time to the midpoint, and uses the weather values nearest to that. Data accuracy is dependent on the service provider, but you can view their respective sources on Forecast.io (for Smashrun Pro users) and OpenWeatherMap (for non-Pro users)"

For activities longer than an hour (specifically Races), it might be nice for Premium members to see the weather changes every hour.
