A "KOM" or "QOM" should only be for a categorized climb Segment
I'm of the mindset, that unless the segment is a categorized climb, there should be no KOM trophies. Maybe that's a bit extreme, but it should not be a KOM, unless its meet some climbing criteria, e.g. +3% grade for +0.75 mile minimum.
Instead of trophies for segment leaders, jerseys more appropriate to the segment would make more sense.
For example, real climbs should get a polka dot jersey (not a real jersey, just an icon instead of the trophy), and it should be the only segment given the KOM moniker. Flat, one mile/kilometer or less sprints should green jerseys, and long 15+ mile segments with climbs, flats, descents should be given the coveted yellow jerseys.
Lastly, in no way, should descents ever be called a King of the Mountain. I don't necessarily advocate that downhill segments should go away, but since they are not ever issued points or awards in real competition, should left as least significant of all the segments. Ribbon icons, or PR's, but not a trophy or jersey.
We all ride with what I call the "segment chaser" guys, who sit in the back of a group all day, only to jump out near the end of a segment, all rested up, speeding past the group, seeking a new PR. On descents, these people are careless and dangerous, or just make things needlessly chaotic and dangerous for those of us who are training and working together for the benefit of the group/club/team/etc..
Please find a way to make real and challenging segments more rewarding, than easy top speed oriented descent segments. All those big guys who want to smash it down a hill, can save it for the club ride sprints.
