Correct and Edit bad GPS points in an Activity

Occasionally I've had problems with my cycling GPS data, and have been getting spikes and spurious readings which result in strange route fits, and miscalculation of actual distance traveled (usually overestimated). Are there any plans to allow for manual pruning or manipulation of bad GPS data points by the user, thereby allowing Strava to "fit" the route more closely to the actual ride? Obviously, my phone is the culprit for the bad data, but it would be really useful to have the ability in Strava to either 1) remove/edit the wonky GPS points, and/or 2) to fit/nudge the route manually to existing roads on the map when the route is not properly tracked.

I've heard that other cycling apps can do this, but I don't have any experience with these. I think it would be very helpful for those of us who want our Strava logs to reflect our actual mileage :) I realize it's probably easier said than done, and of course this would effectively kill any segment stats in the affected area. But since I use Strava mostly for mileage and mapping, and less for segments (though I do use and enjoy these), I wouldn't be as concerned about the effects on the segment calculations.

Anyways, thanks for considering this. Keep up the good work!

Some great tips and tricks in this thread on how to fix existing problems with GPS data! Thank you for sharing.

It's quite an intensive project to build a GPS-editor tool for Strava. It's clear that there would be great value in investing in this project - however, it is not currently planned. Please keep adding your votes, and we're always happy to consider this project for a later time.

  • same problem. would love the route correction ability.

  • For this to be something added, Strava would also have to eliminate those "edited" sections of the ride/run for eligibility in any nearby segments.  This could lead to a slippery slope of moving waypoints and skewing segment data.

  • Agreed, Eric. It wouldn't be an optimal fix, and the effect on the segments could be pretty significant. One potential method would be to have a "mask"  feature akin to the Crop Ride functionality, wherein the user could select a specific customizable region to ignore (presumably one with bad GPS data). Another would be to nudge/reposition the route. Of course, as you mentioned, the edited/masked region would not be eligible for segments within and/or flanking that region. But with bad GPS waypoints, the route, mileage, and speeds are usually vastly miscalculated, so the segment data is already inaccurate and the offending segments would be useless anyway. How Strava would treat  the ignored region(s), (e.g. connect the dots using best route fit vs remove the ignored region mileage altogether) is open for question.

This is not a life or death feature, but it would be nice to at least have the option to tweak things to keep the routes accurate, even at the cost of losing some segment functionality. This with the caveat to users that editing the route will impact segments.  My guess is that such functionality would be more useful to those users who are more concerned with route accuracy than with the competitive aspect of things.

  • I also would love this. Having just done an epic 26 hour ride I would love to cut out the straight line bits where my phone was on charge in the support van and to move my finishing point also after the battery had died again. Just being able to edit the map of the ride and draw in the actual route taken would be brilliant. ( that or find a smart phone with a decent battery!!)

  • Mike, you can trim off the start and end points of your ride. When you log in from the website (not the mobile app), select the ride and then click in the wrench icon. Select "Crop Ride" and it will take you to a module that lets you crop off the starting or ending points of your ride. Great for situations like you described.

  • Was in a hotel, on a trainer (not mine) and saved up the HR ... well it would not let me enter the miles so have the HR only ... and when you "add a workout" doesnt hold the HR ...

  • GPS is GPS right - I need the same ability for my runs.  I have been adding little segments here and there to make up for when Strava says my run is too short, but I have no way to crop it if Strava says it is too long.  Either way it's a pain to deal with this discrepancy.  It is a pretty basic feature request if you ask me, Garmin, Training Peaks, DailyMile, and SmashRun all let you edit your runs (or rides).  I don't understand why we don't have this here.  https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/43144320-Ability-to-Edit-Distance-Time-of-an-uploaded-activity

  • I realise it could be open to abuse, but it would be nice to be able to top and tail the elapsed time so that it is true moving time - my most frequent route takes around 35-40 minutes, but for logistical reasons I press Record a good five minutes before I even sit on the bike, then when I get to work/home, it can be another five minutes (or occasionally an hour) before I get it switched off. To be fair, I rely on the Garmin for proper course recording, and Strava just for individual segments, but would be nice to have some consistency.

  • When strava stops and if you could add the missing miles you would not get the segments where the missing miles are...! simple

  • What if anything is happening to these requests? I would like to manually input swim data (as I do not have / cannot afford a swim GPS), and sometimes my battery dies on the Run / Bike. Strave, please let us know what the developers are / are not considering.

  • I would like to think someone is reading this and would like to improve the site by adding a missing bit of functionality, but I don't get that feeling unfortunately; I've mentioned it in another thread and Twitter a few times without any responses yet...

  • Sorry Ken! I'm reading every word. Sorry I haven't chimed in yet.

We have no current plans to add a feature for this, but please keep your votes and feedback coming.

  • Thanks @Elle, then can you or someone else at Strava please tell us why this would not be added?  Otherwise I may as well just manually enter distance and time for our runs/rides if that is the only way to get an accurate entry onto this site.

  • http://ridewithgps.com/ allows this and has been adding features to help things be accurate ... hate to have to start over with them but just signed up for a year to get around this!

  • Right, as I've mentioned a few times elsewhere, SmashRun, TrainingPeaks, Garmin Connect, etc. all allow you to edit your own data to correct for discrepancies...  so... why not Strava?

  • I supposed the easiest answer is that this feature has not been prioritized by our development team. However, feedback like yours helps! Sorry we can't do more in the short term to help with your request.

  • My phone frequently runs out of battery at the end of work day when I am riding home. The fact that I cannot add to my route and finish point and time to complete the ride is ridiculous! This alone may be a reason why I go back to the other guys (mapmyride).

  • Still hoping to keep this request alive as it is a basic feature that shouldn't be hard to implement.

  • I would like to see Strava add the ability to edit the overall distance of a run or bike ride, even if this editing ability causes all segment/elevation/mapping to be deleted.  Another option would be to mirror a previous run or ride that didn't have gps problems, i.e.: I ran the same route today that I've run 10 times before, let me use the previous good gps route with today's time and heart rate information.

  • My problem is with "riding" on a trainer. I can manually enter my "ride" with the time and distance and additional comments as to my wattage and RPM. I would also like to have my heart rate info to check my zones. But, if I use my Garmin Forerunner 305 for this and upload the "ride", all I get is the time and HR info and no way to enter distance. So now I have two entries for the same ride. Is there any way to either combine these two into one, or simply add the distance for a "trainer" ride? Since there is no GPS data, adding distance is not going to give me any KOM's and therefore no cheating.

  • Did a 53 mile ride and discovered strava gps error. Strava reports my ride at 61 miles and cannot match over 15 segments I traveled. I tried the segment match tool, but it refuses to match segments due to gps data. Strava should provide improve gps accuracy and provide tools for correction before the strava gps error becomes wide general knowledge.

  • When running on the treadmill distance is not recorded, but I can read it in he tredmill, I can't find a way to manually add distance to my strava input that came from my garmin-

  • Strava will never be my go to training log until miles can be edited.  Things happen on a run(or I'm on a treadmill) and I need to manually update the mileage.  Runningahead and Garmin Connect allow this and I'll be sticking with those two for now.

  • I would love this feature too -- a lot of my runs are on the treadmill, and all of my bike rides are on the trainer; it's annoying that unless I manually add an activity (and delete the one synced from Garmin, thus losing the HR info), I have a bunch of activities of 0.0 miles.  Garmin, MapMyRun and RunningAhead all have this feature; Strava should too.

  • I am on vacation and have used the Strava Ap on my iPhone to record when I have used a spin bike in the gym.  Each time I have recorded a 30 min workout/spin and tried to record it on Strava ap.  When it uploads it states I have worked out for 1 second (even though I recorded for 30 mins +)  I NEED to be able to edit it once I have downloaded so I can input the distance, time etc actually recorded on the spin bike!  Please!!!!!!  Annoying Strava!!!!!
