Show Total Elevation lost/Total Descent during an Activity

Hi

With the increasing popularity of Enduro racing, and many mountain bike parks offering lifted/shuttle service.  It would be great if Strava displayed both the total elevation gained and also the total elevation lost during an activity.  This feature would be of benefit to other users as well, as any ride which doesn't start/finish in the same location will have different elevation gained/lost during the ride.

Cheers,

Trevor

  • I agree with Trevor. I have recently moved to Strava and love the app however the one feature I miss from other apps is the feature to monitor your elevation gain (or loss) during a ride.

  • Yeah, would be great for shuttle rides and other sports like skiing, either XC or downhill.

  • And for downhill endurance running as well. A long descent can be just as challenging as an ascent. Obviously, the data is already there, please show the elevation drop numbers as well! Thanks!

  • I think this would be huge for mountain bikers in general and gravity riders in particular. Bike park riding is really expanding to include all mountain and even trail bike riding along with the traditional big bike stuff. For me, it's more relevant to my riding and training to know how much I descend, which isn't anywhere close to how much I've climbed when lifts are involved. Check out this inspiring and relevant article: http://www.pinkbike.com/news/Adam-Billinghursts-One-Million-Foot-Trek-Session-99-Bike-Check-2013.html.

  • YEEEEES PLEASE!! We need elevation loss! Only having elevation gain gives very limited information about the session. Can it be added soon? It shouldn't be very difficult. Ps: I do really like strava a lot, but it's in desperate need of elevation loss. Thank you

  • This is just about the only obvious feature missing from Strava. Please add it; I'm considering switching to a ski tracker app, most of which show elevation loss. Mountain bikers need this information for obvious reasons.

  • Yesssssssss!!!! please add elevation loss/descending to the stats :)

  • Come on Strava, add elevation loss. Like most MTBers, the descent is the reason I ride up!

  • Why is this not a feature? This is the one thing Garmin Connect does better than Strava. Lots of people want this info. Not everyone using Strava is a roadie that just cares about climbing totals. Come on!

  • It's not about Roadie Vs. Mountain. It's about having the full picture of your ride. Fully understanding your adventure and knowing what you did. Road bikers and mountain bikers both want to know this.

According to strava, these two rides are identical:

    1) A 30 mile ride with 3K of climbing, but no descending (all flat). I'll come home from his kinda tired, but not really.

    2) A 30 mile ride with 3K of climbing and 3K of descending. I'll come home from that with a TOTAL workout (including upper body workout from the descent).

    Fail, on strava's part.

I've moved to using a ski tracker. It tells me how many miles I've gone, total up elevation, total down elevation. Really simple and obvious features that all bike riders want to know. I can't imagine why this would be controversial, they have the data to implement it.

  • What is the status on this? Can we monitor elevation during a ride or not?  Runtastic and other apps do this. Strava should as well.

  • This would definitely be good to know for hikers too.  I did a strenuous one-way shuttle hike yesterday that had 3200 ft. gain and over 5000 ft. loss.  The stats show an "elevation difference" of 5320, perhaps that is close to the elevation loss.

  • This is why I left Strava and use a ski tracker instead.

  • This is a logical request. Strava collects ascent data today, why not allow us to access it?

  • I agree!

Worth noting that us mountain bikers do care about climbs, we want figures on total descent too. I do some rides with an uplifted start to say 2000M, then a 1000M descent, 500M Climb and another 1000M descent. I can work it out with segments or by looking at the highest/lowest elevation difference and then add the climb.

Rather than show 500M climbing on the ride can it now show whichever figure is the highest - ascent or descent if it cant show both?

  • Has this thread been going on for two years with no response from Strava?  This seems like a no-brainer.  Why do I have to look at the Garmin website to compare elevation loss to gain?  I just did a ride today where I would love to compare descent to ascent - started at the local ski area and road trails back to town - plenty of climbing but even more descending, which is good living.  Please, Strava?

  • Still no total descent? Hopefully I am wrong but does Strava have something against Enduro and DH? This has to be a business decision because the code it simple. These communities really want/need to see descent totals. Strava is a great tool for casual riders to racers of all disciplines because of the useful data it provides. Not all rides are loops or out n backs though, some utilize ski lifts or shuttles so users can't just look at total ascent to determine descent. What might be the most important piece of data in those rides? DESCENDING!! We need total descent data PLEASE!!

An added benefit is users won't have to leave Strava on during shuttling to determine total descent (by looking at ascent) and the roadies KOMs won't keep getting busted.

  • I can't believe that this feature was requested in 2014 and it still hasn't been added.  Kind of surprised that it wasn't in there in the first place.

I just spent the weekend shuttling Downieville and would love to know how many feet I descended each day.

    Strava, PLEASE add this feature.

    Thanks.

  • Wow this is pathetic. I'll make sure to phase out Strava soon since your competition actually cares about their customer service feedback. Not even a response in 3 years is this for real?

  • Convinced Strava is avoiding this for liability reasons.

It's not like it's slowing anyone down.

There are still responsible users out here Strava.

I have heard rumors about another app coming out that will be fully inclusive and show descending data soon....
