Show Segment Creator on Segment page with discussion

There are always bad segments, for many reasons.

A few examples:

- Creating segments from a ride tracked with a mobile, so the profile is bad, or the track is off the road.   Pretty frequent problem.

- Segments starting/ending right near a stop sign/traffic light.  Obviously dangerous, sprinting all out when one should be slowing down.

If the more advanced users knew who created them, they could ask the segment owner to modify his segment to be safe, or just delete it, and let others recreate it from a better data source. (aka a Garmin)

Also, discussion (comments) on a segment would be nice.   Segment owner could be notified on new comments.

  • Basic. One of the must have features. Commenting segments is the other one.

  • A bit far-fetched but maybe segments could have their own message boards?

  • Without the possibility to send a message to other members (creators) it is just a half solution

  • Nice idea, but I think it only works if we account for some of the side effects.  Some I can think of offhand:

    • Any change to the start/finish will alter the leaderboard makeup.  People will get butthurt over this and claim that the segment owner is gaming things.  They will scream loudly at no one about how Strava is permitting tyranny and that they are the rightful King deposed.  People take this stuff pretty seriously.
    • There are third party APIs that use the segment data.  Does the API have a way of letting third parties know if a segment was altered after the fact?
    • What if the person who made the segment deletes their account?  Is it an orphan that no one can "own" and edit?
    • What if the segment creator is just a deadbeat, doesn't care or isn't interested in fixing things, but the community knows the segment is broken?

So, in light of these things I would amend the idea to say that segments can be edited during some initial period (90 days?) after creation, thereafter they are historically set.  I would also make the KOM holder as a person who could edit the segment, but probably more reliably the Ambassador program should be expanded to give this responsibility to someone.  As much as possible it would be nice to have segment edits as a sort of community/wiki type of thing where if people who have ridden the segment 10+ times (or something like it) agree that it should be be fixed they can do it.

People will still get peeved about anything you change though.  Not sure how to prevent that, but bad segments are a downer.  I hope Strava is kicking around these ideas too.

  • Strava has fixed some flaws but there are still flaws. Also KOM's could be should be by bike type. You could have a KOM for a geared bike and also have a KOM for a fixed gear. I train on a fixed gear a few days a week and while my geared bike training is generally faster I have ridden some fast times on the fixie.

  • Great discussion here, thanks Strava users!

There seem to be two main themes here:

    - A public discussion board for each segment

    - A private message system to send feedback to the segment creator

I think this discussion fits in nicely with this one: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21727682-Too-many-segments

This could very well be part of the solution to improve segment quality and help surface the segments that matter to the community.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • This is vanity, I admit, but I like the idea of listing the segment creator as a way of giving credit to well established popular segments.  I am not as phased as others regarding multiple similar segments.  The "Hide" tool can address how one wants their own activity analysis to look and I can also see legitimate reasons for having a nearly identical segment.  A bike shop here in town has created a number of segments with a tag of "Garage Official" in the title (The bike shop is named The Garage).  They then have a leaderboard posted up at the shop for these segments.  I can see them wanting to have ownership of their friendly unofficial competition, so they make their own segments with the "Garage Official" tag so that they own that segment and results are quasi-official.

  • Hi, so any workarounds to show Segment Creator?

  • I liked this thread when it was created but wanted to add...(this pertains to mountain bike segments) as a trail builder I've created a number of segments that make sense. They have good start and end points, aren't dangerous, make sense, are named with regard to the trail name and or direction if the trail is a two-way trail segment. ie NB or SB.

I'd like to suggest having the ability to gain admin rights for a trail system or systems if  you can prove you are someone like me that creates and maintains the trails that contain segments that are wonky. That way they can be cleaned up or deleted if someone that is new or doesn't quite understand how to create segments. I've  had segments created in the trails I maintain that overlap or are the same as an existing segment. I'd like to have the ability to remove them in a case like that.

Trailforks.com is doing a great job of this and have given me admin rights now that I've established myself as a  trail creator/maintainer. Strava should do the same.

  • It would be useful to know who created a segment in my area and be able to write to suguerirle improvements in this segment, for example, take safety measures decreasing the distance of the segments before dangerous intersections or semaphores.

  • +1 At a minimum list the segment creator.  Creation date would be another useful piece of information. That could let you go comment on the ride that created the segment to suggest edits.
