Amazon Fire Phone App

Hi,

Please do a conversion of your android app to the Amazon App store! I've got a Fire phone and really miss my ability to track my rides :(

  • It's been months! Endomondo has an app. You'll be losing my business if you don't make a Fire Phone app.

  • I was recently in a session with amazon developers, and the Fire phone uses the android SDK, and based on what they told me, existing android apps can run without modification. If that is the case, what is the hold up on making the app available on the Fire phone?

  • Whether or not you'll be putting the app on the Amazon app store, can you confirm one way or another? I need to decide whether to switch to Endomondo. We haven't heard anything in over a month, so please stop leading us on.

  • It's a new year. I would really like to start using strava as soon as possible. Please create an app so I can happen. Thank you

  • I just came back from a ride using the Strava app.  It seemed to work just fine.  I just purchased the Fire Phone.  I've not even put the sim in it yet.  I installed the Google Play Store.  Then I install Google Maps from the play store.  Finally I installed Strava from the play store.

Did you sideload the google play store app? If so did you follow the instructions that were linked to from amazon's comments section? I think it was a total of 4 apks to get google play to run?

I was kind of leary of those since they came off of dropbox. but may give it a try. Cheers.

  • Ive tried sideloading but all I get is 'no connection' on Google Play app. Followed the instructions to a T. Anyone have this problem and managed to overcome it?

  • Let me see if I can list out the steps and then all of you can point out where it doesn't work.  The you tube video of installing Google Play Store was hard to follow and didn't seem to work for me.

    1.  From the amazon app store install ES File Explorer.

    2.  Then  download the following files.  This can be done on your desktop computer and transferred to the phone or directly on the phone.  I prefer my desktop computer because I'm sure where I put the files.   If these files have the zip extension instead of apk, you'll have to change them to apk.

(First problem I don't remember where I found the last two files)

    Google Account Manager_4.0.3-239410.apk

    Google Services Framework 4.0.4-338691.apk

    com.google.android.gms-4.3.23.apk

    Play Store 5111.apk

    3.  On the phone open the ES File Explorer and navigate to the "Download" folder.  Touch on the file and then install

    4.  When finished you should have two new icons on your phone.

    5.  Open the Google Play Store app.

    6.  Install Google Maps.

    7.  Finally Install Strava.

  • 'Can't see the me to button...'

You have to log into the desktop site. Button isn't available on mobile site.

Thanks for taking the time to share this, it's much appreciated.

Update: Still doesn't work for me. I googled the files versions listed as my versions were older but I still get the same error. A bit of research is suggesting that I need two things for it to work:

    1. Donor Android device registered to google play account (I've never had any Android device?)

    2. Copy the APK downloads to /system/app using ES file explorer (I get read error EROF folder is read only). Google suggests I need to turn on 'Root Explorer' in ES File Explorer however this doesn't work (feature cannot run on your device) - you need to root the device to use this.

Any help would be appreciated - I'd like to avoid rooting my device

I am going to try this procedure this week. Seems similar to Charles'

This link was posted by a very detailed amazon reviewer. Second review on amazon on the unlocked fire phone reviews.

  • I looked at the link Graham provided.  I'd have to agree that it is better written than my post and included a step or two I forgot.  However, the apps appear to be different and I installed one extra one.  You can get three of the apps at the link below, but they are not the same version I found previously.

I didn't think about needing a Google Play Store account as I already had one.

I put the apps in the download folder and installed them from there.  I didn't attempt to place them in the system folder.  I've not attempted to root my phone and  I did this without root privilege.

  • FYI I have had an answer from the support team to advise me: "There are no plans to release a version of the app for Fire OS."
Hopefully Amazon will try to persuade great apps like Strava to get on board in future

  • See if I can get these instructions down a little bit better.  You don't need to have root access and don't attempt to move the files into the /system/app folder.

    1.  From the amazon app store install ES File Explorer.

    2.  Then  download the following files.  This can be done on your desktop computer and transferred to the phone or directly on the phone.  I prefer my desktop computer because I'm sure where I put the files.

download the first two files from here

    https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=73036323a69e3cf1&id=73036323A69E3CF1!1484&ithint=folder,.apk&authkey=!AIVXLFXAOWDeM0Q

    Google Account Manager_4.0.3-239410.apk

    Google Services Framework 4.0.4-338691.apk

down load the next file from here

    https://mega.co.nz/#!XAtRiCQB!of7avIXfIqCgczdx_Wl5xwZTBz_DPUJOyVI_xUVY5aA

    com.google.android.gms-4.3.23.apk

download the final file from here

    http://www.devfiles.co/download/fwyUA4Cg/Play.Store-5.1.11.apk

    Play Store 5111.apk

    3. On the phone  open settings > applications & Parental Controls > Prevent non-Amazon app installation.  Then on App Installation move the bar to "on",  Then press okay.

    3.  On the phone open the ES File Explorer and navigate to the "Download" folder.  Touch (click) on the files in the order above and then touch (click) install

    4.  When finished you should have two new icons on your phone.

    5.  Open the Google Play Store app.

    6.  Install Google Maps  (I can't say this is necessary but it is what I did and I'm not willing to start over).

    7.  Finally Install Strava.

Thanks for your good intentions but this method does not work for me. I have reset the phone to factory default, executed the instructions (I've tried variations of this about 10 times now) and the play store will not connect. My google play account has an Android device logged to it but if i try to download an app on my computer it prevents me because 'You don't have any devices'?

If anyone can use this method by creating a new google play account I'd be interested to hear from you please as it seems that without a previous device that can be used as a donor, this method doesn't work.

Another factor could be UK Fire devices (I live in UK). The OS is 3.6.6 whereas other sites report compatibility only for later versions

  • Dale;

I'm sorry this doesn't work for you.  I'd suffer from withdrawal, I fear, without Strava.  :)  I did check I have version 3.6.8 of the OS dated 28 October 2014.  Maybe at some point you phone will update and Strava will suddenly work.  :)

  • Charles' instructs (and file links) still work like a charm. Just loaded files and started using on my unlocked Fire today.

    Thanks for the post!

  • Unfortunately, I started getting notice about Google Play service had stopped working.  I tired the suggestions I could find, but the notices would pop up faster than I could kill them.  Ended up removing Google Play services which means Strava quit working.   I did find View Ranger in the Amazon App Store.  I can write out a gpx file on the phone and then use Silk to upload the file to Strava with only a few "clicks".

  • Charles,
Same Problem with me must be due to a recent application update on Google's side. I have restored my phone to factory specs and started using endomondo. It's a shame that that is the only fitness app on the Amazon store. Not sure why strava won't port their app to the fire OS as many other applications Have done oh well I'm kind of over Strava anyway. Cheers.
