Better Year-to-Date Mileage Totals and Stats in Training Calendar

We've seen a number of separate feature suggestion forums focused around Athlete stats for the current year and previous years, as well as better reporting of these metrics via the Training Calendar and other features, for example:

  • "How do I see my mileage total for last year?"
  • "I'd like to be able to compare my total kms, elevation and time on a graph compared to my previous years on Strava."
  • "I would like to be able to compare each year's stats."
  • "I'd love to see how much climbing I've done per month and year in total."
  • "I want to know how many miles I ran each month, year, etc., and how many miles I cycled, swam, etc.. On the Training Calendar now I only get total miles for ALL activities."
  • "Would love total miles + elevation broken down for runs & rides. Right now the Training Calendar shows combined activities."

Background:

For the current year, your Strava Profile page will display your Year-to-Date stats for your preferred activity type (either cycling or running as set in your Profile Settings). On the Training Log, you can see weekly mileage, time, and elevation totals going back through your history. On the Training Calendar, you can access yearly and monthly mileage and time metrics for all your activities combined, but there is no elevation statistic.

This feature suggestion forum pulls together the main themes from many separate but related forums we've seen. Please use this forum to add your feedback, input and ideas around what is most important to you in terms of year-to-date reporting. 

The leading feedback trends so far are to separate yearly metrics in the Training Calendar by activity type (running and cycling), and to add yearly elevation totals.

March 26th, 2015:

We've just released a very small, but potentially helpful tool on your Profile pages. In the "My Stats" section, you can now select any year under "2015". Selecting another year will display your cumulative distance, time, elevation gain and number of rides for that year.

  • I think your suggestion above on splitting training calendar by activity type will meet my (simple) need: to see my totals for last year by run/bike/swim, so I can beat them in 2015!
    One other idea could be to see the Year to Date figures for 2015 compared to 2014 at the same time, to know if we are ahead or behind last year  :o)

  • It's good to hear the potential for separating running and biking stats on the training calendar.     Yeah, you can view your total yearly mileage broken down separately between running and cycling on the right side under My Stats, but adding a filter to the above section allows you to see a progression of stats over time broken down by month or week.

  • I would like it if the "commute" button meant something -- i.e., I'd love to see a total commuting miles for month, year, etc.  Thanks!

  • The data I want to see is on the My Profile page.  YearToDate totals of Distance and Elevation for Run & Cycle activities.  This was there Dec 31st, and wiped out Jan 1st.  It's a simple filter by date range that is obviously there and just needs to be selectable by a user.  Also, other activities should be made available, swiming, etc.

  • a filter in training-calender-view into running and cycling would be nice, but please also keep the total stats of running and cycling combined in training-calendar anywhere in training calender.

  • Yes please! On the training calendar I would like to  be able to choose an activity type. Then the yearly AND monthly figures would be for just that activity. This would make the training calendar much more useful.

  • I would like to review my previous year totals by sport (ie look at my 2014 running mileage and 2014 cycling mileage).  I don't really care where Strava puts the feature, it just needs to be somewhere.  This is a severe shortcoming for an otherwise incredible service.  Why hasn't Strava addressed this yet?

    I would like to see the years in the side-by-side comparision with other athletes.

  • I found a solution for those of you looking to compute your Year End Totals (miles, elevation).  From the Training | MyActivites filter by type (eg. Run) and sort by Date.  You can then Copy/Paste into a spreadsheet and sum the columns with a formula.  When you insert into the spreadsheet, select Paste Special and choose Text Only (Values Only).  It takes some editing to remove the units (feet or miles) from the cells, but you can do a find/replace to remove the non-numeric units.  You'll also have to cleanup the buttons text that are copies, easy to do with the same find/replace technique or simply ignore those rows.  And since the MyActivities page only displays 20 rows at a time,  keep traversing through the pages until you have all your dates for the year.  Repeat for each activity type, bike, swim, etc.

    This would be easier if Strava had an export tool, but it seems that Strava has several shortcomings.

  • In order of importance to me: 1. Elevation stat in Training Calendar. Essential 2. Ability to compare Current YTD stats vs any previous years' YTD stats at a chosen date. Excellent idea! This would show you if you're crushing it or falling off. Strava, you guys could get really creative with this tool too. You could show the side-by-side stat comparison. But you could also offer it in graph form. All years could be graphed on the same chart. This would give a great visual reference for how the year is measuring up to years past. A gooey serving of hot visual data coming right up! 3. Separation of activities in Training Calendar. For me, this is a "would-be-nice" feature. I don't run as much as I used to. I'm almost exclusively cycling now, my activities being ~90/10 cycling/running. I'm sure the tri guys would eat this up like candy though.

  • FYI, for people who are really into numbers, remember that Strava has an open API. Sites like http://veloviewer.com/ take your Strava stats and give you far more data than you could ever ask for. It's not quite as nice as having it integrated into Strava itself, but there are some options out there.

  • It would be very useful to have a custom range for comparisons and different stats, especially elevation. I often want to know how many vertical metres I've done in one period compared to another period.

  • Great idea...it is a remiss not to have the Elevation Gain on the training calendar with the other metrics.  Most of my rides focus around climbing (as I sure is the same for the vast number of cyclists!), so it's a key training metric.  Also should be  on the My Stats page under "last 4 weeks" and "all time."

  • It would be very nice to be able to see a chart of my yearly activity on my profile page. Currently you only support monthy, or weekly.
