View all Segments in Segment Explorer

I'm always looking for new segments to conquer and many times there are some good ones already defined that just don't show up on the segment explorer.  Is there any way to have a "see all segments" option?

  • Yep. Add me to the list. Live in rural Arkansas. The exercise culture here is basically non existent. The only way to feel not like an alien whilst all the "cowboys" sneer and try to hit you with their pickup trucks and to utilise the 4 or so segments in the surrounding 40 miles or so. Can't do that now.
Useless. Very disappointed in the quality of all fitness tracking apps, over the last few years they have all gotten significantly worse. Will be ending my membership

  • Hello, same here (Spain)... Entire areas are now empty of segments so the exploration of new segments is impossible. If your riding area is not crowded the segment explorer is now useless. What does this have to do with privacy?

I was about to open a premium account but since this change Strava has lost a lot of interest for me. Please strava, switch back to the old algorithm in the segment explorer!

  • It's a shame, the main reason why I bought the Premium subscription was to try to conquer the existing segments and now without being able to see them, I have no reason to continue being Premium, it was good while it lasted lol.

  • Segments are what brought me to Strava, motivated me, got my ass in shape, and caused me to pay for a premier membership.  As winter fades, the roads clear and my psych rises, I find that now, there are virtually no segments in Explore any more.  I am baffled as to why you find any compelling reason for removing Segments from Explore Segments.

Unfortunately after reading through the pages of complaints, this seems to be something you don't care about.

  • The segment explorer is also useless in my area now since your recent updates...

I cannot see a single segment but the 400m track of the local stadium!

  • I was actually considering going to Premium membership...but this problem which has arisen over the last month for me is making Strava useless to me.  One of the main reasons I like Strava was to plan a bike or run over a segment or two for extra motivation.  Now, when i do "Segment Explore" around my area like I used, NOTHING shows up...no segments at all.  Segments that I know are there...segments that I can go back on and access from a run...but I can't get to them anymore in Segment Explore.

    Why is this???

  • Practically all segments in my area have vanished. If this stays like that, Strava has lost its core feature which is about finding interesting places to ride or as an incentive for training through competition.

Hope this gets attention by being picked up by some media like rainmaker or CyclingWeekly, the staff seems not to care about it?

  • I live in quite rural area and rarely see a fellow cyclist on my rides. I've created dozens of segments in the neighborhood, of which I see none in the explorer. Great!

  • This is very frustrating, rendering the most engaging feature of Strava nearly useless... In my local area I now can't see or find most of the segments that I want to view.

Is there an alternative app out there that can find the lesser used segments that are currently invisible?

I can understand trying to limit the number of segments that show up on any given view, but surely give us the option of filtering to view those that are hidden?

  • This is quite a bummer.  Moving into a new area last year, and there were a few "segments" that I wanted to run.  Now they're gone.  You can still do them, but they don't show up on the map.  Making it very hard to find.

I live in an area where it would be very unlikely to ever have 10 runners using strava, so every segment is gone.

  • Hiding segments that aren't popular seems like a hacky solution to data sensitivity.

If you really want to keep military areas out of strava results, why not track down known military zones and exclude from everyone? That seems like the real solution rather than this hacky popularity feature which just makes it so that road rides account for 90% of strava explorer results.

If you are in the military and you create a public segment on military land then it's that persons fault. They can create private segments or simply not create segments in strava if they don't want those locations exposed to the public.
Heat maps are a separate issue altogether. You can turn them off for your rides/runs/etc.

Lastly, the privacy zones feature should allow privacy for customers who want to use strava but don't want certain areas included in results.. It's really not that complicated. The software should give customers the ability to track what they want and hide what they don't.. Hiding based on popularity just makes it difficult to find segments if you aren't a roadie.

  • Yeah... here in my city of 250k+ I have segments with 50-100 efforts from a dozen+ people and they don’t appear on explorer.

    Strava, this sucks.

  • My Segments don't appear in my small town of 9,000.  I created 20 segments and they don't appear so all my running friends don't even know about them.  are you fixing this issue?????

  • This has been an ongoing issue and Strava does nothing! I was once a Premium member and cancelled due to this. Retired military with 25yrs service and I can tell you Google Earth is a much bigger force protection issue than Strava. The military can/will enforce it's own control measures if it's that big of an issue.

I have created routes in hopes of enticing other MTB riders to come try a certain area that I've ridden but of course due to the stupid popularity policy they dont even show up. I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of great segments created by others as well. However, I do see hundreds of road bike routes that I'm not interested in but can't filter.

Nice job Strava at making the Explorer useless...and not listening; Brilliant!

  • The segment search / explore is atrocious!

I just want to see my local trails, but no. Can't even find what I created. Piece of shit software!

Thank god I don't pay for this...

  • Crazy. I made a bunch of segments, trying to get all the good climbs in the local area. There aren't many road riders but a decent number of tourists and I thought it would be a good resource for them. Now most of the segments don't show up because they haven't had 10 riders... kinda defeats the purpose.

  • At it's most basic functionality, Segment Search is useful for extreme anger, befuddlement, and disappointment.  Strava "team" does some nice things but why the Segment Search is so awful is baffling.  Segment Explorer is it's evil twin, which kinda works.  They have the worst search engine.

  • The popularity filter is now jacked up way too high or there is some other change that has made the feature useless...

  • I thought strava was supposed to motivate people, hiding about 90% of the segments in my town hasn't really done it for me. I use segments for speed training and it makes a big difference to my running but I can't see where they are now.

  • Similar experience here. Segments previously visible through segment explorer have all vanished. Not sure what changed in the code base but it needs revisiting...

  • I agree on people saying how crucial it is to see segments on the map. I've used Strava for years for road / xc, and I will not quit Strava like this, but for new people there is nothing now that gets their attention: the data, the segments!

Strava used to answer the question "where do you guys ride?" but it's now shooting its own leg. I'm not angry or disheartened, but more like afraid for the future. If I had any money involved with this business, I had already started making big noise.

Yes, I read about army bases vs. heatmap in Finnish news, but later on Finnish defence force publicly wrote how they deal with location privacy. It was not at all strict to my ear. I understand that active operations abroad is different than army training, but what if...

    1) Make global heatmap viewable through Strava account login? Cuts off the most of the world easily. At least for the time being.

    2) Segment explorer already is restricted to users, has always been, right?

I know a user can be a leak, but it feels kind of far fetched to think such things for... what, global security? Who's data is it anyway?

  • Maybe this is a good time to make use of the Strava's ability to add posts to the Activity Feed and share this with our friends and followers to get them joining in on this conversation.

  • Strava has hid all segments in my local area of Cabot, AR and surrounding area.  Little Rock Air Force base is about 15 miles away from my location.  It appears they kept some segments in Little Rock, Conway, and Searcy...not sure why that is.  Stupid move on Strava's part IMO and their explanation doesn't make much sense.  Just another disgruntled premium member.

  • Hi there!

I hope the segment explorer will be function very soon again like before. It make no sence, if the athlete can't see all segments in the window of the segment explorer.

I have seen this problem 4 weeks ago and at first I was thinking, that it was a problem of my PC. But it is'nt. I have use different browser, different windows systems and different PC's. All the same problem, that the segment explorer dos'nt work and dos'nt show the segments.

I hope starva will fix this function because it makes no sense.

This tool can be used to have a look to the segments near your home and with "athlets with bad intent" it dos'nt have anythimg to do.

Kind Regards and have a nice day to everyone!

  • Same problem here. Strava segments have just disappeared from my explorer (not a military zone). Time for a new app to take over from strava maybe

  • I am so bummed out by what Strava has done. I used the segment explorer feature a lot. I use it to locate new spots to ride here in Nova Scotia. I’ll be dropping my premium membership if this feature isn’t brought back.
