View all Segments in Segment Explorer

I'm always looking for new segments to conquer and many times there are some good ones already defined that just don't show up on the segment explorer.  Is there any way to have a "see all segments" option?

  • Yep, same story here. I'm trying to boost up mountain biking here in Ruka skiresort and creating Segments was a very handy tool to get more people to ride amd to discover new trails. Now that Starva is giving us BS about popularity treshold, creating or finding new trails is basically impossible. Strava was a very good and useful app, now it's just useless.

  • @Jonathan Smars,

The only way I have found other segments in more rural areas, is to find at least one segment at least somewhere close to you if possible, and then click on those runners who ran that route and see if they hit any other segments on that particular run.

It's how I found a segment right next to my house that literally only had 6 people attempt it.

  • It would really be nice if Strava acknowledged this.  The link to the blog at the top of this article leads you here:

"Reach out to our Community Support team if you have any questions or want help.

And when you get here all you find is more frustrated users.

Strava: Please get rid of the segment popularity change!!!  Please let James Quarles know our frustration.

  • Would have nice to have seen this feature fixed instead of the time being spent breaking premium into 3 lesser packages.  When will the segment explorer functionality be restored?

  • what is needed is for it to return all of the segments within a search area, paginated, not just 10.

that also needs to apply to the API as well. it would also be useful if the API would return segments that start/end within the bounded area, not just those that are full contained in that area

  • I think a filter for segment distance would make segment explorer much more useful. I'm trying to find some longer segments to do (I want to work on longer efforts), but I can never get them to show up. If I zoom out they are over-shadowed by all the short segments that are more popular (I only know about them if I encounter them by chance and see them after I upload). It seems that short segments by default are more popular. My hypothesis is that the shorter a segment is the larger the number of riders that encounter it will be, thus allowing it to become more popular. Some longer segments might be more popular if riders were able to seek them out instead of find them by chance.

  • The identification of segments in a given area is the main issue for me that lets Strava down. An app that is all about segments but does not have a user friendly or acceptable way of finding them. you need to be able to expand the map to full screen to see all segments in a particular area not just a few selected ones.

  • Yes extremely annoying, if you want to make your environment a little more interesting for other athletes

  • Yep I'm echoing everyone else here but it would be a lot more fun if you could explore and find every segment or at least be able to search for it.

  • When visiting small towns, I have found that many popular tracks are not showing up at all in the segment explorer. This seems to be an achilles heel for the whole application if you ask me.

Furthermore, reading this thread kindof pisses me off as it seems Strava doesnt give many f##ks about community requests. It's abundantly clear that this is an issue that a large part of your community cares about, and yet 5 years of moaning have passed, you have provided no fix, and hardly even responded. The f##k am I paying for? Pathetic. Get me out of here.

  • I guess nothing is changing for this segment exploring feature for a few years, based on this thread going on and on with no resolution.  Shame because I liked this app too.

  • Martyn Hd 🏴. Agreed. Is there a way for Strava to check and respond to these comments or are they falling on deaf ears? I also would like to see the functionality of segment explorer to actually show all segments.

  • agree with this a lot.... because you can't see them you can't star them to load to garmin.   this is low hanging fruit for strava and should fit in a sprint.   the popularity filter is broken as many in our area don't/won't show at all....and many of us like them a lot

  • To be fair, many people won't add their bike, and even if they did, they might then forget to update as they move their computer from bike to bike.

But don't get me wrong, Strava are bizzarely lazy when it comes to adding new features. In this case, notice how crappy mountain bike segments usually have about one athlete listed on the leaderboard. Strava, could I search only for segments with a minimum number of athletes please?

There are many such reasonable improvements which Strava could make, but don't. I could make a few guesses as to why they do so little, but I really don't understand them.

  • Heat Map! Yay!

Can we get the map a bit more visible so you can figure out where you need to be/ go? Then some filters would be ace (gradient, length, road/ offroad/ downhill... the usual stuff)

From a newly relocated mountain biker looking for decent trails

    Cheers!

  • It is even worse - sometimes I am connecting via a proxy in foreign country. If you now search you will find almost nothing. Even search for correct city and street give you an international result. Zoom in doesn't help.
So seems some dependency on geolocation.
The explorer definitely needs filter criteria. The criteria in doogal seems to be perfect, but seems still to have the same issue as the segement explorer itself. Not all segments shown that are definitely there.

  • Good to know i am not the only one with this problem. I was wondering if i was really stupid in not finding my own created segements :).

I actually created today a new segment as on the Leadersboard of a segment it showed that my PR time was a better time than the CR, but i didn't arrive anywhere on the board. We can not find segments but even Strava can't recognized that my PR on that segment is faster than the CR of that segment.

  • @James Hero thats quite a good way of finding more segments! Thanks for that!

My suggestion is that EVERYONE who reads this, starts a support ticket and complains about this. You've taken the time to look this thread up and some even reply, take 2 more minutes and write a quick support ticket about this. If enough people do it maybe they will listen, I doubt they are reading this post at all. I have!

  • Totally agree. So many features that used to exist that no longer do. This one in particular and the ability to explore segments using satellite imagery and not just the bland standard map is a great miss.

I would have thought at the very least, paying subscribers should have access to these. Very disappointed.

  • Jaako, that actually makes sense IMO. They want to show segments where people actually naturally ride, vs segments that are unique to an individual or created just so someone could get a KOM (which should probably have been private to begin with). I've seen people create crazy weird segments that wouldn't make sense for anyone else to ride that specific sequence (like 3.5 laps of some big trail followed by a road ride back to the person's house).. People like KOM's so they make dumb segments to get them.

My issue with the popularity thing is if they're only showing the most popular segments it won't show hardly any off-road  segments in areas that are dominated by road biking since they won't be as popular. They should have an option in the search to show the less popular segments (excluding perhaps ones where only a single person has ridden) or something so we can find new places to ride.

  • One issue is not being able to see segments with a leaderboard that has less than 10 people. I can understand Strava's reason for that, although it still seems arbitrary.

However, it is absolutely impossible to see many legitimate segments even if they qualify due to having enough popular segments nearby. That especially applies to longer segments. To see a longer segment one needs to zoom out so that both the segment's start and the segment's finish fit on the map. But zooming out includes many more popular segments in the map, so the chances that that longer segment won't make the top 10 popular segments in the area are very high. So basically no matter how much you zoom in or zoom out, or move them map, you won't be able to ever see some very nice segments.

  • Now that segments is a premium feature, will Strava finally prioritize improving Segment Explorer / Search?

Using popularity as a filter to show only top 10 popular segments is a really flawed approach.

Popular segments are often boring because they occur in most trafficked areas.

It is much more fun to discover less popular segments and try to make top 10 on them, which I have zero chance with popular segments. But the only way to find those is to see what other people run in my area and what segments they happen to match. Once I find those rare gems I have to star them, otherwise I would never find them again in Segment Explorer. That especially applies to longer segments - finding those in the explorer is nearly impossible. And by longer I mean segments that take upwards of 1 hour to finish. Competing those is a much more challenge than sprinting a 0.1-0.2 mile segment.

  • If u guys are true hardcore strava users u will just create routes thru the area in question and it will expose the segments (even if u have to use manual mode because no trails there)
