Push Notification when someone I follow completes an Activity

We are notified, when someone comments my activity, gives me kudos and all others actions, however the main notification is still missing. Strava is about comparing with others and competing and we are still not notified, when some of my friends/followers just completed the activity. There is only option by receiving e-Mail, which is received like 1-2 days later. So when you want to know, whether some of your friends/followers has completed some activity Today, you need to keep checking application 10 times a day manually. This is the only or main missing functionality comparing to other tracking applications.

PLEASE ... add push notifications to be sent to a mobile, when some of your friends/followers has just completed or uploaded activity.

  • Unfortunately it has not :( It would require a lot of LIKES from users and then STRAVA Support Team would be just considering :( Such a simple feature.

  • I'd really like to see this too, another tracking app I use has it and it's nice to be able to congratulate or give a like/kudos someone straight away after they've achieved something.

  • Recently started using Strava, after migrating all my runs from MapMyRun, and this is the first feature that I've found to be missing, and its kind of a big shock to me.   It really does seem to be a huge omission.

It won't stop me from continuing to use Strava because I love so much about it, but hopefully this will get added soon.

  • On the iPhone IF (if this then that) can do this for you. You can even setup alerts for specific people you follow.

  • There is an app available for both apple and android users called 'If That Then This' (IFTTT) that will allow you to get push notifications to your phone when specific friends complete activities on Strava.

    https://ifttt.com/recipes

Once you have installed that app you need to create 'recipes' to notify you when a specific friend completes an activity on Strava. You need a new recipe for each friend, unfortunately, so it may take a while to setup initially depending on the number of friends you want to receive notifications for.

I appreciate that this is just a work around for a Strava shortcoming but you might be waiting for a while before Strava add this feature. Clearly it would be better for Strava to develop this functionality themselves but I feel that this app has solved the issue for me.

I hope that you find this helpful?

  • I totally agree. Seems like such a basic function. In fact, it may be the MOST BASIC function of an app that claims to be a social network for athletes. I was very surprised when I realized that I wasn't getting notifications for friend activities being uploaded. I felt like they were sneaking activities in on me. What's the point of "Following" someone on Strava if you don't get notified when they're doing something? That's the main motivator of this app (or could be). Such a no-brainer. Why do we actually need to convince Strava IT that this is a great function? Totally confused.

  • Totally agree with every word you wrote ! STRAVA should already come with this most elementary function.

  • Three sites are always opened in my browser - gmail, google+ and strava. So for me it doesn't make sense to get notified about all activities, but for some people with few follower it could be helpful and really it is not very difficult to implement it.

  • Roman, I agree I would want it to be an option that could be turned on/off for each person I'm following otherwise you might get overwhelmed with notifications.

  • It's still probably not enough people a not visible enough for Strava Support team. Last week I have contacted Strava Support team once again, to remind them this topic. The answer was, that they are not at the moment working on such a feature, but they have recommended IFTTT to me instead as a solution, where we can set notification, when any of your Strava friends completes the activity.

OK ... to save you all some time ... I have tried it and following is why I have uninstalled it after 3 days of trying ...

    1) It doesn't notify you right after the activity is saved/completed by your friend. It happened to me, that I have found completed activity by my friend earlier by checking Strava manually than waiting for IFTTT. IFTTT notified me 18 minutes later.

    2) Notifications are preset to show, that your friend completed the activity measured only in METERS. So for example if your friend completes bike ride, you might get notified, that your friend has just completed the activity of 145846 meters, what I personally find SILLY ! You can change the syntax of notification, but the distance can be only in meters, so the only way is to remove distance at all.

    3) When any of your friends completes the activity, you will receive push notification from IFTTT about friend completing the activity. When you open it or click on it, it doesn't open Strava application, but it opens IFTTT application instead. So you kind of confirm, that OK, you've been notified, then you need to close IFTTT and you have to manually open Strava again. So you get notified, but now you need to open 2 applications.

    4) And now the funny part ... if you have many friends and for example 5 of them completes their activities Today, you will receive 5 notifications from IFTTT. OK ... now you need to go through 1) point, that means, you have to open IFTTT to kind of confirm and agree, that you got notified correctly. Then you close it and now you are going to open Strava. You just got rid of 1st IFTTT notification, but on your display will still be remaining 4 IFTTT notifications. Opening the notification from IFTTT doesn't close all notifications from the same IFTTT application. So ... now you need to 5 times re-open and re-close IFTTT application and confirm 5 times, that you got notified correctly. After you 5th time confirm IFTTT, you can close it and now you can finally open the Strava.

4th point made to to immediately uninstalling IFTTT.

  • Whether Strava cares or doesn't care about customer's satisfaction, not allowing this feature I find as real fault by Strava. I can get notified, when I'm mentioned, by using @name, I can set cover picture of activity, but I cannot get notified, when my friends completes the activity ! What for is there motivating kind of competitions by segments ? Why I can get notified, when someone takes over my KOM and I simply cannot get notified, when someone completes the activity ? Don't understand, what is behind this, what holds Strava for allowing this feature, because I'm sure it not about possibility, but it's something else, what is behind all of it.

  • Strava, please add push notification option to the app! It would greatly enhance the functionality and experience. I know a few people who would drop their current tracking app and start using Strava if it had this simple addition.

  • @Mark Allain - yes this can work, but it's a poor solution to a glaring omission in the native functionality of a modern social running app/website.

As posted about earlier, there is a significant delay between the event and the notification.  Clicking on the notification doesn't take you to the run in Strava, it takes you to the IFTTT app to tell you that you were notified. (Thanks, I guess?)
