improve display of non-bike, non-run activities

I do a lot of non-ride, non-run stuff, and Strava really cripples the display of data for it. For example, under my profile -> my stats, I can see ride or run stats for last 4 weeks including avg distance per week, avg time per week, distance/elevation in 2015 (or all-time) etc -- yet there is no display that includes other activities. Could you add an "other activities" and "all activities" option so that users may see summaries of what they've done outside of the narrow scope of "ride/run"?

Specifically with backcountry skiing, this is a problem. Elevation gained is elevation gained, regardless of what's on your feet.

Other notable places Strava gives more data for something marked as Ride/Run but not any other type of activity:

  • Heart rate analysis is missing from premium analysis for non ride/run - I canceled premium because of it
  • Activity calendar in athlete profile refuses to show time/activities for non ride/run - shows 22 activities, 12 runs, no way to display the other 10
  • "Matched Runs" equivalent does not appear in activity for non-run/ride
  • Even something as simple as changing "running" to "walk" or "hike" causes that activity to be treated differently - WHY?!

  • 1) I skate ski, after a ski, before I change the activity type I can see my hearty rate info, when I change the activity type all I get is average and max values, nothing on a time access, don't think I became the Tin Man.

    2) I seem to remember when I first started using Strava that all my activities showed up in the calendar along with total distance of all activities, on a weekly/  monthly basis, no more. Is there a good reason for this change?

    Thanks

  • During winter months, my main activity is backcountry skiing (6x /week) but in my weekly summary Strava shows me as doing 0 miles and 0 vertical because I'm not cycling or running. Knowing my weekly vertical (and that of my friends/competitors) would be immensely helpful for me and the thousands of others who use Strava as a tool for preparing for ski mountaineering races and mountaineering endeavors.  This is a market where Suunto's Movescount site has taken significant market share, due to their focus on vertical gain.

  • We've recently updated the weekly profile widget to include tracking of all activity types. Let us know what you think!

  • Elle - I noticed that, and it does work. Thanks!

"My Stats" still only shows ride / run / swim and it should be fairly trivial to add "other" and "all activities" buttons. If you would consider doing this, I would really appreciate it.

Naturally, I would still like to see premium HR analysis in non ride/run activities. It was missing when I subscribed to premium last year and I don't know if anything has changed, since.

  • Hi Elle,

    Great update, thanks!

Of course the bar always moves.....  :-)

Any possibility of showing more detail in the heart rate detail for other activities. When I record, I record as a bike ride, as long as the activity stays as bike ride there is a full record of heart rate. The moment the activity type is changed all that detail disappears in the activity log.

    Thanks for being responsive

  • Yes, thanks for the feedback about HR analysis with other activity types besides running and cycling. I hear you on this one, and I think it's only natural that we move in this direction in the future. However, we don't have any current plans.

Thanks and we appreciate your thoughts!

  • I would definitely like to see a comparison of "matched hikes" as I do many routes on a regular basis and it would be great to see how they compare over time.
