Filter Segments to individual KOM, Group ride KOM and Pro KOM

In the area where I live there is a Pro team (NFTO) there are Club Chaingangs and obviously individual riders. These groups and pro teams hold the majority of the Segment records and as such you can't get near them unless you're in a group which in my humble opinion defeats the object. I want to know that I am the fastest individual etc and not be blown out of the top 10 by a large Chaingang group or indeed the Pro riders.

Segment leaderboards should show

Individual rider KOM / QOM

Group KOM / QOM (the definition of a group would be 3 or more riders riding together) Strava can already identify group rides and as such this should be easy to do.

Pro rider KOM / QOM - Its a bit unfair for Pro riders to hold all the local Segments but it is nice to see how you fair against them.

As such, the segment filters could easily show the above data and everyone would be happier.

  • I agree but for different reasons:

    1. Where I live in Phoenix, many riders avoid the heat and do their group rides crazy early in the morning -- for me at least since I like the heat.  I have trouble finding groups to ride with so all my achievements are individual and I'd appreciate the opportunity to compare to other individual efforts for my own motivation.

    2. Group achievements are perfectly fair but so are individual time trial-like efforts.  To filter on the two would be very helpful -- and motivating.

  • Agree. You're in competition with local riders and you all are in top ten, and one day a pro race goes on your local roads... Now you're on 168 position and you run out of steam. Please make leaderboards for pros separate!

  • We can "TAG" users as they are PRO riders (if they don't do himself) in a way quite similar as we tag risky segments, "vehicle rides" or something...

So it's not impossible doing this "PRO rider filter" ;)

  • Yes Strava, please do it,

It would be great and more real for users to know exactly  against who are you 'fighting'...

  • I totally agree! There certainly needs to be a separate KOM and QOM for Pros!

  • Wow! - a whole year and no resolution? It sucks big time that riders who are wheelsuckers who can barely maintain 16 mph solo get in a group of 4 or more, ride 21 mph on a route, then that group steals your KOM and boasts PR's they can never achieve alone.

  • Yes come on Strava don’t ignore us.... add in leaderboard KOM / QOM filters for Pro, Group rides, individual etc.

You’ve managed to add a filter to allow an individual to appear to people who don’t follow them to look like they’ve done an individual ride when they’re in a group ??? I don’t see the point of that !!!

  • I agree with the sentiment, but not all parts of all the responses.

I ride alone, I like it that way at least right now.  The group ride recordings make both the free KOM/QOM accolades, and the paid-for direct comparison with other riders of similar age/weight a nonsense in most segments. Only where it is technically difficult, not interesting to most, or is a clearly established race-to-the-finish is there an even field.

A review of the data for a segment makes it fairly clear when a bunch has been out on a route on a given day.  The wide variety of sensors used or not used makes it hard to know how the data was collected in many cases.  For instance, riders without recording GPS - presumably they have been declared as companions on the ride and therefore quite easy to separate as a group rider.  Other are more strange sometimes, but even so it's not inevitable that all those posting great times do so by choice.  If ou're in Strava and you do a ride in a group it just happens.  You would have to do something to prevent the time being posted.

If you look at some segments though, the records stand out as odd, and Strava could easily find these automatically even if times are not posted live.  For instance, two riders posting near identical times on the same day, one with estimated high wattage to achieve the pace, the other using a power meter system and recording way lower power than would be needed - clearly in a group wouldn't you think?

As a lone-rider I would also say that it matters not how many people you drafted, if you were not in the wind the whole way you don't get an individual time.  On one local segment I could clearly see in the data that the KOM could not even keep up with the person they were drafting the whole way, and there is only clear record that two were on the ride.  Crazy even to bother claiming it.

Besides all the other good reasons for wanting to distinguish efforts that are already mentioned, this is now paid-for data, and I would say that in most cases I'm not getting decent comparison data except on quite off-beat segments.

  • This still hasn't been addressed by Strava. In fact they did the exact opposite.

For some unknown but totally stupid idea they now allow you to hide the fact that you are in a group ride. So for example my wife has a QOM, another girl is second place but when you click on her ride it shows she rode alone. However when looking at the photos on it she's in a group of 14 riders. Looking at the other riders profiles on that day, you see she appears with them in the group.

Now to me this is ludicrous. Her settings allow only those who follow her to observe she did that ride and got her achievements in a group, but to anyone else she did the segments alone.

Come on Strava get this sorted out.

Different colour Crowns for different ride types

Gold Crown for a segment taken by an individual or riding with a max of 1 other person.

Silver Crown for getting a segment in a group of 3 or more riders.

Its obviously an easy fix so lets get it done. It then encourages individuals to go for Crowns which are attainable as an individual!

  • Even two riders is obviously a group. Have you ever seen an individual time trial with a max of 1 other person?

  • Unfortunately, this would not be accurate at all, especially if you factor in historical data that does not have the associations already in place.  Strava's ability to determine what was a "group" ride or not is terrible.  I've been tagged as riding as part of a group that I never even saw.  Looking at the flyby, I was near them a few times, but never part of the group and definitely never getting any assistance from the group.
