  • Just a note of support. Been having all the similar issues with apple watch Strava app freezing upon excercise completion and the HR light remaining on. I commute and use the watch 6-8 times a day to log miles to clients in NYC so it was super helpful to find the discussion on the forum. Glad it's on their end and not yours. Love the app otherwise. Looking forward to the next OS versions.

  • Hi

The Strava app won't open on my Apple Watch. I get the spinner and it carries on spinning until it dies and goes back to the watch face. I've tried closing the app using the long press buttons.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app on the watch.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my phone and then to the watch.

I've tried restarting watch and phone.

I have a new Apple Watch (got it in December) and have upgraded OS to 2.1

My phone is the 6 plus running OS 9.2

All other apps both new and old run on my watch except for one other that does the same thing.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Eric

  • Should the activities you perform in Strava create a workout in the Activity app on the iPhone? If so, my workouts are not being created. When I use other apps, such as Runkeeper, it creates the workouts successfully.

  • Hi. A couple of questions for Eric (I guess).
    1. When an update to Strava is released, such as today, what do you recommend we should do? Just let it update it to the watch and continue, or remove it then reinstall? I notice that the old Strava was on the watch until I went to my iPhone and selected Strava and move the switch to allow it to install the new version, I guess "over the top" of the old version.
    2. If all we are using is the watch and phone, can we turn off all the devices in the Strava settings or should they still be on? If so, which ones should be left on?
    Thanks,
    John

  • @Eric, are you still experiencing the app not opening?

@Alexis, currently Strava activities on Apple Watch do not sync to the Activity App on the Watch.

@John, let it download the latest version!

  • @Jeremy, are there any plans to allow Strava to write the workouts to the native iOS Activity app?

  • @ Jeremy, thank you. What are your comments regarding the second part of my post?

"2. If all we are using is the watch and phone, can we turn off all the devices in the Strava settings or should they still be on? If so, which ones should be left on?"

    Thanks.

  • @jermey I agree second what @Alexis asked are there any plans to allow Strava to write the workouts to the native iOS Activity app? If Runkeeper can do it there is no reason Strava can't do it.

  • It's not clear to me whether updates to the iPhone app will automatically push updates to the Apple Watch app if the Strava app is on my watch, but Automatic App Install is off (General: App Install).

  • I agree with Chris and Kevin. Strava workouts should display in the Apple activity app, especially as it was touted at the Apple event like a flagship product.

Issue: I cannot get the Strava app on my apple watch to read my heart rate. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app several times. All options in the health app are turned on. I'm running an iPhone 5s and both the iPhone and watch have the latest apple updates. It doesn't matter if I use my chest strap (UA 39) or if I remove the strap from my Bluetooth settings. It just won't read my heart rate no matter what I do. When I have the strap connected, the green HRM light on the watch does not illuminate.

  • Glad to see the progression of this app. I just found this forum and was wondering if there is an update in the works for heart rate recording. After some rides there is no heart rate data in the strava app, but all of the data is in the activity app on the iphone. Other days, the data transfers fine to both apps. I'm running the latest iOS 9.2.1 and latest Strava 4.10 and watch OS 2.1. Any ideas?

  • Ugh! I am having the exact same problem as Michael Taylor, and have been since trying to use the WatchOS 2 version of Strava. Like Michael, it doesn't matter if I have my Wahoo Tickr Run HRM paired to the watch (my preference), to the phone app, or not at all (at which time the green lights on the back of the watch illuminate), all I ever see in the lower right corner of the app is the "circling" outline of a heart. No numbers, and and no data when the workout is complete. I get how this is all supposed to work, and I am completely confident that it is not user error. I want to settle into Strava as my fitness app, but cannot do so until this actual works as described and as (apparently) others are experiencing. Micheal, can we help each other troubleshoot? I ordered my watch on the launch date (delivery May 2015). You? Also, I also cannot het HR data from Runkeeper's OS2 app. Have you tried? (I'm wondering if it is a hardware issue.)

  • Running the latest OS and app versions. Like others, Strava isn't recording the heart rate though the same exact activity shows up in the Health HR data.

  • Hi there. I posted this as a seperate help request before I realised it may have something to do with the watch app.
I use an iPhone and apple watch (both updated to latest OS) to record my runs. If you look at my routes, (e.g. https://www.strava.com/activities/473220139) there's one I do quite often. It's 6.2km long. Every now and then, however, Strava states that it is 6.4km long, even though it recognises it's the same route, like this morning https://www.strava.com/activities/482997255. Also, looking at the pace analysis it's a flat line, and for the first km, the pace is clearly defective! No one runs that slowly!
I haven't changed any settings on the phone or watch, and do the same routine every morning in terms of when I start the run on my watch.
This is a bug that's been present for a long time. Can you advise if you're working on a fix? In the meantime, can the overall pace be trusted? Is there a way of fixing the first km time?

    Thanks,
    John

  • I should add that I'm running on relatively flat ground, with wide open roads and nothing that could interfere with GPS tracking. It's always an error with the first segment, which makes me think it's a bug with your software and not with the GPS signal.

  • Update to my Jan 29 post: the watch app works perfectly now for heart rate monitoring. Apple support walked me thought un-pairing and re-pairing the watch (not difficult - the software backs up the watch data and then restores it) and the watch app now, for the first time, displays and records HR data (either from the watch sensors or my bluetooth HRM paired to the watch). So, Michael, give that a try. Open the Watch app on your Phone, select "Apple Watch" (the first item) and choose Unpair Apple Watch. The process took a while to restore (unsure, but less than an hour), so have enough battery on each device.

  • I am having the same issue as Eric.  Starting two days ago, the Strava app won't open on my Apple Watch.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app on the watch.

I've uninstalled an reinstalled the app on my phone and then the watch.

I've restarted the watch and phone.

    Iphone 6 running OS 9.2.1

I don't see any suggestions here...but maybe I'm missing something?

FWIW, I find it the "buggiest" of the watch apps.  Sometimes it stays on the home screen during a workout and at other times, I have to select it.  It sometimes gets hung up at the beginning or end of a workout.

  • Nance,

What version of WatchOS are you using? You can find out by going to the Watch app on the iPhone and then picking General > Software Update. Apple does not yet push the latest version of WatchOS even if you delete and reinstall.

Please make sure you're running WatchOS 2.1 by going to General > Software Update. You should see a prompt to update if an update is available.

  • I have tried to read through all these comments but have not seen the issue that I face. I only use the Apple Watch to track runs, as my Garmin 520 is fantastic for my cycle sessions. But have been noticing that while on a run the Apple Watch Strava app will just arbitrarily end the session - there does not seem to be any one factor that would stop the session (whether it be time based or distance based).

It started on this run https://www.strava.com/activities/487738731 it just ended before my run finished.

This morning I was out on a run and it just ended and the next time I glanced at my watch it was back at the start icon for a new session. https://www.strava.com/activities/493926684

Its been cool in the morning and I have been running with a long sleeve top and I wonder if that in some way has been inadvertently ending the session. Curious to hear if other people have had similar issues. I have the latest versions of Strava app, iOS and WatchOS.

    Thanks

  • @Mark Mitchell: I am certain it is the sleeve issue you mentioned, as the same happened to me a few days ago. I think that swiping right to end is a poor UI choice, and should at least be able to be user-disabled, if not abandoned altogether. Here is how it happens: you raise your wrist, the display activates, and as you lower your wrist the sleeve is heavy enough to act like a swiping finger (yet before the arm-lowering disables the display). The UI should be -only- force-touch to stop. If there is a second option, it needs to be a combination of gestures that cannot be accidentally activated. Very frustrating to find out you've lost the record of part of your run.

  • I have several of these problems. I believe many of these issues stem from notifications that come in during the run.

    1. Today, there was a 15 minute flat-line in my heartrate data. It seemed to recover after I futzed with my watch during the activity. It started right about the point where my watch stopped updating data after I dismissed a notification.
    2. Once I get and dismiss a notification during an activity, Strava stopped showing up when I raised my wrist. I think Runkeeper does the same thing. I had to manually launch Strava, even though the green exercise man was showing.
    3. Also after the notification came in, when I raised my wrist, the screen displayed was always the "Stop activity" screen, probably since it's the first.

My hunch is that after dismissing a notification, the watch "forgets" that it's supposed to show the exercise app on a wrist raise. When you force it (by toggling the setting to always show the last app and not the watchface), it re-launches the previous app and shows the first screen by default, which in Strava's case is not the data screen but the "stop" screen.

It's really a shame that all these apps have problems like this.

  • Please provide "lock screen" function to Strava app on Apple Watch. Such option is available in Apple Workout app during activity (hard press->lock screen).

Sweaty sleeve of my rain jacket keeps interrupting my activities! Thanks in advance

  • Hi.

New problem after the latest update to the strava app - no pulse rate being recorded. I've uninstalled Strava from the iPhone and watch, reinstalled, addressed every notification, turned on everything  in the health settings, but no HR is being recorded in Strava.

I can start and stop the run form the watch, and the HR appears on the watch throughout the run.

Is anyone else having that problem?

  • Hi,

I got it to work after trying various steps.  My issue was strava iwatch gave error when trying to start a run ( cannot connect iphone check bluetooth etc).

I think the timing of it breaking matched when apple release a new iphone IOS patch.

    Failed tries:

    Reboot

Turn on and off access through health app

Enable disable heart and other monitors

    Reinstall Strava

    Throw watch

    Complain a lot

    Success:

Unpair watch.  Pair watch and run restore.  My watch was backed up ( to icloud I think ) so everything is back to normal.  The steps to do this are pretty automatic.  It took about 15 minutes though.

I hope this helps as it was very frustrating experience

  • Not really a solution, I suppose, but ultimately I just got a Garmin. I still love my Apple Watch, and Strava, but the heads-up display of the Garmin, along with its (more accurate) heart rate monitor, and the speed and cadence sensors, just resulted in my forgetting all about the issues with the Strava app for the Watch.

  • I have done the same. The apple watch, iphone just cannot cut it when trying to do regular training - trainer/road. Especially if trying to capture all metrics when working in a program/with a coach.

Garmin is seamless and simple, the only part of strava that is of any use now are the segments. I don't know why strava is turning into another social media app. Unfortunately, I've already paid my year subscription, but I won't be renewing going forward, its not worth the lack of functionality for training and I could care less about leaderboards.

  • I've noticed that the HR from the Apple Watch frequently show flat for the first 1-6 kilometers in the iPhone Strava app. Then seems to be more accurate after that.

  •  I've had the following issues with the apple sport watch:

    1.  Incorrectly recording the first split of a run - it's almost like as the iPhone app kicks in it also stars recording and I get a 12min per Km split for the first one when all of the others then go back to normal 5-6min per KM.

    2.  Crashing and not starting if a message or tweet notification comes up just as I am starting to go for a run. On more than one occasion I've had to abandon using the watch and quickly skip over to the watch app.

Im on the latest update, in fact now it's just downloading 2.2 so let's see if that sorts it out.
