Challenges not being updated with my rides

Hi,

My rides are not updating my distance and climbing challenges for October.  I have left and rejoined but that hasn't done anything.

  • Best guess, is because your activity is not public. After the new privacy settings feature introduced in september, challanges has only counting if the activity was public. A change which make me considering switching to TrainingPeaks.

  • I'm experiencing the same with the Gran Fondo challenge. Besides leaving and rejoining I tried refreshing the Challenge Achievements, but that didn't do anything either.

  • You have to share all rides to public. Thats the reason I will leave all challenges. I'll be back, if I can share it only to my followers.

  • I have the same issue David, left and re-joined loads of times

  • I think the issue is if you have rides/runs etc ... only visible to followers, it doesn't apply to challenges anymore. I was having the same issue and after doing some poking around this is my conclusion. I am not thrilled about it. I'd like to be able to participate in challenges but still have my runs only visible to followers as it used to be.

  • Hi Folks,

We've updated our Privacy Settings. You can read how this update affects your activities appearing on leaderboards and challenges here

    Cheers!

  • It's a real shame that my rides, my life needs to be public to take part in challenges.

It's even more of shame that I just renewed.

This is a really bad decision by Strava.

  • Hi All, I’ve logged this with strava support and they confirmed that all activities have to be public to count towards challenges. They argued this had always been the case, wrongly... which was rather annoying and not at all customer friendly, given the fact that, like you, I’m also seriously considering switching to another service, as I like the challenges but don’t want to compromise on privacy either. Anyway, here’s the full response from customer service person:

    Hello,

Thanks so much for reaching out—happy to provide more information about this. First you should know your settings haven't changed. We have never enabled athletes to compete on public segment or challenge leaderboards while at the same time limiting activity access to your followers. If you would like your activity's segment times to appear on public leaderboards, you will need to adjust the activity's privacy controls to "Everyone".

Our previous setting called “Hide from Segment and Challenge Leaderboards" removed the activity from public leaderboards and prevented it from counting towards challenges. It also meant that non-followers could not access those activity details. However, we never had the option to be on a public leaderboard or challenge while limiting that activity’s visibility to followers.

No matter what you choose for your activity’s privacy control, you will always be able to see your own segment times on your activity page and can even filter by “My Results” to see a complete history of your times for that segment.

We have many ways for you to control how you show up on Strava, please visit this article to learn about this setting or our Privacy Center to learn about the change.

    Regards,
    Travis‍

Don’t feel very ‘supported’ to be fair... what do others think?

  • Right, I've fixed it.  It is to do with who can view your activities.  You need to change the settings to allow activities to be viewed by everyone but this only applies for any new activities.  You then need to go into each activity and then edit it and at the bottom, you can change who can view.  Once done, they all count.

That said, I also agree, that I'm not happy that the activities have to be public to take part in challenges.  The whole point of this is it is a social site.  I have friends that live in flat areas, other countries and I live in a hilly area, so the challenges are nice to have a bit of competition against each other. :-(

  • Does anyone have a phone number for Strava or are they just an email company?

  • Can't stop wondering, why they would make a change like.

One of my guesses, is the right to data. Is making a ride public, the same as a consent, that Strava can share/sell our data, with/to whomever?

Can't see why else making such a downgrade.

If I had to renew my Strava subscription tomorrow, I had declined, because it was one of the things I minded to pay for. Unfortunately, my subscription was renewed in September.

  • Strava is a joke. I have TrainingPeaks and other REAL tools for training, I used Strava premium since 2015 for the small perks, like having challenges and badges between me and friends, while this happened it was never EVER required me to go fully public (you had to dig in on the leaderboards).

I didn't use any private rides, I just kept it between my friends and followers. Does Strava realize the world we're living in? Do they think it's somehow worth it to challenge yourself and earn a simple jpg badge and signal every stalker, thief and anyone to know what routines you do, and where do you live?

Even if you do a big safe safety area around your house it's easy to pinpoint and follow you and put you in jeopardy, and that's what you people at Strava are inviting users to do, to put themselves in danger. They're encoraging people to give up their training data, riding data for free for anyone to see.

I don't think that we all should go public to police each others just because Strava can't do it on their own, and cant effectively control who is cheating. As a matter o fact they've already won, cause you put everyone as a cheater for the sake of some rotten users - some are not even premium. It's a shame and I'm canceling my subscription and will do it loudly.

  • Since the beginning all my rides were shared to my followers. Every month I saw my position in the leaderboard and my rides has counted to the whole world distance.
I’m not an professional sports man, it was just for fun.
Now I’m missing this feature. And of course I will end my subscription. The only thing I did the subscription was to take part in the “le col” rides.
Maybe we none professionals didn’t like the feature now is. We are commuters. We are riding from home to work and there should be no public interest where these locations are. Professional cyclist are riding senseless circles.
Maybe the fun was to see, that a commuter can beat a professional.
The result is. I will end my subscription. I will not take part in challenges. I habe less fun of using strava.
But I will ride my bicycle. Thats the real fun.
And it isn’t right. All my rides has counted. ;)

  • Disappointed with this change in terms for challenges, would like to join various challenges but unwilling to do so if I have to make my activities public. Even if activities are private, they should still be included in the challenges. 👎Strava on this feature ☹️

  • Just discovered challenges have to show all activities as public. Strava, I do not want the world to have access to every detail of my workouts, only followers. Now you've taken away a feature where I could see my miles vs people I follow (Monthly run and bike challenges). Disappointed and downgraded my subscription because of this.

  • I have my activities showing PUBLIC, but the Challenges didn't get updated and I cannot figure it out.  Many of the Activities were Virtual rides would that be a problem?  If so why?

  • Greg - That is correct.  If you read in the description of the challenge, it says that manual entries and virtual rides do not count toward the challenges.  There is no way to verify the legitimacy of a virtual ride like you can with a GPS tracked activity.  Essentially, it is too easy to cheat with a virtual ride.  I could easily adjust my calibration for my trainer making it super easy to cover a lot of miles on something like Zwift if I wanted to (no reason to in my mind, but it is possible).

For those wondering about why activities need to be public to show in the challenges, it is because this is a user-moderated program.  If people can't see your activities, how can anyone tell if things are legit?  Someone could have an account and go drive a big hill a few times and "win" the challenges every month and nobody would be able to see if it was legitimate or not.  Wouldn't be fair to everyone else.

  • I'm having this same problem, I've switched the privacy settings to "Everyone", but it's not showing my rides, which are virtual.  The instructions actually say that "virtual rides will count towards the Challenge goal." (the next sentence includes "non-virtual rides will not count, but the 'non-' is on the line about 'virtual', which may explain the confusion).

Does anyone have any other suggestions how to fix this???

  • Chris Detwiller - You may want to go back and check again. All of the challenges I just looked at specifically stated that manual, virtual, e-bike, and trainer riders DO NOT count towards the challenge. If you are seeing something different, which challenge is it stated under? I checked the November Cylcing climbing and distances challenges.
