This is the post for all feedback and feature requests related to Privacy on Strava.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • Robert Mountjoy Can you please submit a ticket to our support team so we can assist?

Christopher H. While it isn't possible to prevent your followers from favoriting you, you can see who has chosen to do so via the mobile app. Navigate to your profile > Click on "Followers" > at the top, you'll see who has favorited you.

Annella C you can see what information is always public by visiting this help center article: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034758331-Your-Privacy-Defaults-when-you-Create-a-Strava-Account

  • Can you please stop giving me the "Welcome to Flyby" notice EVERY time I check flyby? I would not even have the link to flyby on my activity if I hadn't already read that stuff and purposefully went in my settings to re-enable flyby. Now I have to see that redundant notice just to check and see that yes, flyby is still mostly useless.

  • Jojo, thank you for replying. I know I can see who favorited me. I don't have a problem with that so much. I just don't want automatic notifications going out to people when I finish an activity and think that Strava should give control over that to the athlete whose activity it is, not their followers. If Strava is concerned about our privacy, I hope you guys will reconsider how the Favorite function works. Otherwise, I'm going to start blocking people I don't really want to have to block.

  • Please increase the largest radius option on privacy zones. In a city, a 5/8 mile radius (the current max radius) covers hundreds or thousands of households, but in rural areas, a 5/8 mile radius may only include one or two houses.

  • Really great feature would be an option for default private activities and allow a setting for a minimum distance for an activity to be set public, per activity type

  • PLEASE include the simple feature of hiding start time! I am surprised to read that this feedback was submitted to Strava already years ago - and STRAVA does not care. That is such a simple thing and in my user case it prohibits using Strava as a Work Environment CLUB plattform - because it is not OK from legal perspective that supervisors or union can see when an athlete was engaged in an activitity.

Surprised that no one at Strava gets the importance of such easy thing!

  • The flyby featured has essentially been inactivated because Strava has set the default to "off" and very few people know that this is the case.

I assume that Strava did this to automatically protect people's privacy, but it is absurd that when you participate in a race and then you want to connect or see who you ran with, talked to, etc during the race you are unable to do so because so few people even know that their flyby feature has been automatically disabled.  There is little to no use of the flyby feature for people that I already follow (I already know them and knew where they were in the event); it is only useful as a tool to expand community connections.

Was abuse of the previous flyby settings really a problem?  I would suggest making the default "on" or getting rid of the feature entirely.

  • Could you expand the "blocking" features of Strava? For example, I can still see someone's kudos given and comments from someone I've blocked. And a blocked individual can still see my profile photo, a few statistics, and flybys (if they are enabled). For a "block" to be fully executable, there ideally should be no ability for the blocked individual to be seen from my feed, and the blocked individual should not have access to any of my profile information. This is for safety and mental health reasons of all parties.

  • Today during 1 hour I believed that "start hide time" feature was implemented, but no, bad luck again:

    For example:
Let's take "Sentier de la treille" segment https://www.strava.com/segments/12692283.
Fabien Champarnaud, locked profile https://www.strava.com/athletes/12747215, did it on Dec.15th, 2018 : https://www.strava.com/activities/2017967283. Start time is not displayed, then it seems that it works: no way to know his start time ! Bingo !
(OK let's assume that he did not forget to deactivate "group activities" on his profile ; here I can see that he was with "Mitch M", and by browsing activities of Mitch M (who did not lock his profile) I can see that start time was 9:31 AM...)

But beyond this, what is bad is that using Android Strava app, I can see Fabien's activity and start time is displayed in clear text : 9:31 AM too.

Then even when having a locked profile and a carefully selected followers list, in fact start time is visible to anyone using Android app.

When do you think we will have something solid regarding this basic privacy data ?

  • How to use geographic coordinates instead of an address at privacy zone? already changed several times the format and it´s never correctly located.

Can you please inform in which format to put, and the geographic coordinate system.

    Is that WGS84?
