Club Waivers for Members

Strava now allows Club Admins to create and require waivers in order to RSVP for hosted events. This article explains what club waivers are, how they work, and what to know before accepting one.

About Club Waivers

Club waivers are created by club administrators—not Strava. When a club requires a waiver, you'll need to review and accept it before you can RSVP for any of that club's events.

Important: Waivers are agreements between you and the club—not between you and Strava. Club administrators are solely responsible for creating their waiver content. Strava does not review, approve, or advise on waivers.

When You'll See a Waiver

For clubs that require waivers, you'll be prompted to accept when:

  • It's your first time RSVPing to an event for that club, or
  • The club has added or updated a waiver since your last acceptance

Waivers apply at the club level, not per event—so you accept once for the club rather than for each event. If a club has multiple active waivers (for example, a liability waiver and a photo release), you'll need to accept all of them to complete your RSVP.

How to Accept a Waiver

  1. Tap to RSVP for a club event
  2. The waiver will appear on screen, showing "Waiver 1 of X" if the club has multiple waivers
  3. Read the waiver carefully,
  4. Review the Important Information section, which confirms that:
    1. Club admins—not Strava—created the waiver and are solely responsible for its content. Strava is not a party to, nor liable under, the waiver.
    2. The club admins will have access to your signed waiver.
    3. You are of legal age, have reviewed the waiver carefully, and agree to the club admins' waiver.
  5. Check both boxes:
    1. "I have read and agree with the 'Important Information' above."
    2. I have read and agree to the Club admin(s) waiver."
  6. Tap Confirm to complete your acceptance

If the club has multiple active waivers, you'll proceed through each one before your RSVP is complete. Once you've accepted all active waivers, you can RSVP for that club's future events without accepting again—unless the club updates or adds a waiver.

What to Know Before Accepting

Waivers are intended to create binding agreements. Before accepting:

  • Read the entire waiver carefully. Make sure you understand what you're agreeing to.
  • Consider the risks described. Pay attention to what activities, risks, and liabilities are covered.
  • Ask questions. If you don't understand something, contact the club administrators before accepting.
  • Know you can decline. Accepting is voluntary, but declining means you cannot RSVP for that club's events.

Club waivers are only available to members 18 years or older, which means members under 18 cannot RSVP for clubs that require waivers. Contact your club administrators to discuss alternative arrangements, such as parental/guardian consent provided outside of Strava.

If You Decline a Club Waiver

If you choose not to accept a club's waiver:

  • You cannot RSVP for that club's events
  • You can still remain a member of the club
  • You can still view club content
  • You can leave the club at any time
  • You can accept the waiver later if you change your mind

FAQs

Is Strava responsible for waiver content?

No. Waivers are created by club administrators, not Strava. Strava provides the tool for clubs to issue and collect waivers but does not review, approve, or advise on waiver content.

Who do I contact with questions or concerns about a waiver?

Contact the club administrators directly. They created the waiver and can explain what it covers, why it's required, and answer any questions about the terms.

If you're uncomfortable with the waiver's terms, you can choose not to accept—though this means you won't be able to RSVP for club events.

Can I see past waivers I agreed to?

Yes. To view waivers you've signed for clubs you're currently a member of:

  1. Open the Strava mobile app and navigate to the club page
  2. Tap Settings (gear icon)
  3. Scroll to the Events section and tap Waivers
  4. See the waivers you signed for that club with the date stamp of when you signed

If you are a member of multiple clubs that require waivers, follow the above instructions for each club.

Can I withdraw or terminate my acceptance?

Strava does not support withdrawing or terminating waiver acceptance through the app. If you have questions about your waiver or your rights regarding waivers, contact your club administrators directly. Note that applicable laws regarding your legal rights may vary depending on where you live.

What data does Strava store when I accept a club waiver?

When you accept a waiver, Strava stores:

  • The waiver text displayed to you
  • Date and time of acceptance
  • Your account identifiers (name, email address, Athlete ID, etc.)

This data is retained by Strava for 3 years from the date of acceptance. Your waiver acceptance is retained until the expiration of the 3-year retention period, even if you leave the club or delete your Strava account.

What if I have a data request?

Strava's waiver records: You can view your signed waivers in the Strava app (see "Can I see past waivers I agreed to?" above) or export your data using Strava's Bulk Export feature (see Exporting your Data and Bulk Export). Strava retains waiver records for 3 years from acceptance for potential legal defense, as permitted under data protection laws. These records cannot be deleted during this time.

Club administrator(s) records: Club administrators are independent data controllers for their waiver acceptance records. For questions or requests about their records, contact the club administrators directly.

Why am I seeing a waiver I already accepted?

Clubs may require you to accept a waiver again if they:

  • Updated the waiver content
  • Added a new waiver (clubs can have up to 5 active waivers)
  • Want periodic re-acceptance (such as once a year), even without content changes

You'll need to accept before your next RSVP. If you have questions, contact the club administrators directly.

Can I still see a signed waiver if I left a club or the club was deleted?

If you removed yourself from a club or the club was deleted, your waiver acceptance records are retained by Strava for 3 years from the date of acceptance. To access these records, export your data using Strava's Bulk Export feature. Waiver acceptance records are included in the export. For instructions, see Exporting your Data and Bulk Export.

What if the Event is open to anyone, but the hosting Club is private?

Some Clubs choose to host events that are open to anyone while keeping the Club private. The process of accepting the waiver remains the same. If you want to see your signed waiver but you’re not a Club member, navigate to the Club page and tap Overview. On the Overview screen, you will see the Waivers available for that Club. Tap on each waiver to see the waiver text and your signature.

What if I'm under 18?

Club waivers are only available to members 18 years or older, which means members under 18 cannot RSVP for clubs that require waivers. Contact your club administrators to discuss alternative arrangements, such as parental/guardian consent provided outside of Strava.

Why am I receiving an error message?

If you get an error message when trying to RSVP for an event that requires a waiver, check that you have a valid date of birth on your Strava profile and that you’re using the latest mobile app version.
