How Do I Use the Crop Tool on My Activities?

Learn how to use Strava's Crop tool to trim bad or motor-assisted data from an activity, and what to do when the tool can't fix your problem.

The Crop tool can be used to trim unwanted, inaccurate, or motor-assisted parts of an activity. Only activities with GPS data can be cropped, which excludes some indoor activities. Data cannot be cropped from the middle of an activity, only the start and/or end. Examples of when to use the Crop tool:

  • Trim any unwanted rest time at the start or end of an activity.

  • Cut out parts of an activity recorded in a car or that are motor-assisted at either the beginning or end of an activity.

  • Delete GPS location errors at the start or end of a ride.

How to use the Crop Tool

On the web, open the activity you'd like to crop and select the ellipsis icon. Select Crop from the menu.

  1. Use the sliders to specify the portion you'd like to keep. You'll keep what's shown in orange and remove anything shown in blue on the map.

  2. For small adjustments, use the Back and Forward buttons below each end of the slider. You can zoom in much further on the map by selecting Satellite view.

  3. When you've made your selection, select Crop.

  1. Use the sliders to specify the portion you'd like to keep. You'll keep what's shown in orange and remove anything shown in blue on iOS and grey on Android.

  2. For small adjustments, use the arrow icons to adjust the start or end time one second at a time.

  3. When you've made your selection, select Save.

FAQs

Why Can't I Crop Data From the Middle of My Activity?

The crop tool only removes data from the beginning or end of an activity. If the bad data, for example a section driven in a car, is in the middle of your activity, split the activity into two parts first. Then use the crop tool on the middle section that resulted from the split.

What if My Whole Activity Was Recorded in a Car?

If your entire activity was motor-assisted, change the activity type to something other than Run or Ride. We recommend Workout, since it is the most generic activity type available. If you change the activity type, the activity will no longer be eligible for activity-specific Segment Leaderboards.

What if the Bad Data Is on Someone Else's Activity?

You can only crop your own activities. If you find bad data on someone else's activity, flag the activity instead. Flagging removes all of that athlete's times from the Segment Leaderboard.

What if I Made a Mistake While Cropping My Activity?

There is no way to undo a crop, but you can upload the original file again. This requires deleting the incorrectly cropped activity first, since Strava does not allow two versions of the same activity to exist at once. Deleting the activity will remove all kudos, comments, and photos associated with it.

  1. From the activity page on the Strava website, select the ellipsis icon and choose Export Original. The original activity file will download to your computer.

  2. Delete the incorrectly cropped activity.

  3. Upload the original file here.
