Strava subscribers can set their focus on the Progress Tab to personalize their subscription experience. Focus tailors your Instant Workout recommendations to what you're currently working toward as an athlete, whether that's building a base, training for a race, or getting back into a routine.
Setting and Editing Your Focus
You can set your focus on the Progress Tab at any time. Only you will be able to see your focus. When setting your focus for the first time, choose from the following categories and tap Set Focus to save:
- Build Fitness: Improving overall fitness (speed, endurance, strength, etc.).
- Train for an Event: Preparing for a specific race or event.
- Stay Active: Maintaining a consistent routine.
- Recover: Taking it easy or coming back from a break.
After setting a focus, you can add optional information. Tap Save to save any changes:
- Details: Describe your fitness goals in your own words (up to 300 characters). Keep it fitness-focused, such as a target distance, an upcoming race, fitness habits you want to stick to, or sports you want to try. Except in certain circumstances, we’ll use this information to personalize your experience. For more information, see our FAQ below.
- Target end date: If you have a timeline in mind, you can set a date up to two years from today. You cannot set a date in the past.
To update your focus, details, or end date, tap the pencil icon at the top of the Progress Tab. If you change your focus, your details and end date will be cleared. Changing your details will not affect your other saved fields.
Your personalized experience
Progress Tab
Your focus is displayed on the Progress Tab. Tap the display to view or edit your optional details.
If you've set a target end date, a countdown will appear showing how much time is left. The display adjusts automatically based on how far out your end date is. If your end date has passed, the progress bar will appear fully filled.
When you reach your end date, you'll receive a celebration summary with statistics about your training. To receive this celebration, you must have uploaded at least twice during the focus period. If you were training for an event, you must have at least one upload within five days before or after your event's end date.
Instant Workouts
Your Instant Workout recommendations are tailored to your focus, any details you've entered, the sports you enjoy, and your recent activity history. You’ll receive a new batch of twenty Instant Workouts every Monday. If you add or change your focus mid-week, you’ll receive a notification when the new recommendations are ready, typically within a few minutes.
While your focus will always be taken into account when we create Instant Workouts for you, the details you tell us about your focus may not be used for personalization. For example, details that violate Strava’s Acceptable Use Policy and Community Standards, relate to health conditions or injuries, are unsafe for us to support, are irrelevant to fitness, or include unclear content, are not used for personalization. We’ll let you know when your details were not used for personalizing your Instant Workouts in the Instant Workouts hub.
FAQs
Are my Goals different from my focus?
Yes. Goals help you track weekly, monthly, and annual stats like time, distance, and elevation. Focus helps you track qualitative, longer-term fitness goals, such as a target race and pace, a feeling, or a new habit.
Can I clear my focus?
You can clear your details and end date, but you cannot clear your focus once it's been set. If you're not working toward a specific fitness goal, set your focus to Stay Active.
Can I remove my details or end date after saving?
Yes. Open the edit page from the top of the Progress Tab, clear the Details or End Date field, and tap Save Details.
Will changes to my focus generate new workouts immediately after I set them?
Yes, if you add or change your focus mid-week, you’ll receive a freshly personalized set of workout recommendations and will get a notification when they are ready, typically within a few minutes. You will continue to receive the weekly batch of new workouts every Monday as well.
Why don't I have the option to add text details?
The option to add natural language details is not available to athletes under 18. Instant Workouts is also only available to subscribers who are 18 or older. If you're over 18 and still having trouble, visit the Strava Help Center and chat with our virtual agent.
When are my details not used for personalization?
Details that violate Strava’s Acceptable Use Policy and Community Standards, relate to health conditions or injuries, are unsafe for us to support, are irrelevant to fitness, or include unclear content, are not used for personalization.
Why can’t I save my focus details?
You won’t be able to save the focus details that are not aligned with Strava's Acceptable Use Policy and Community Standards. If you think that you should have been able to save the details you entered, reach out via support.
What else will my focus be used for?
Focus will soon power more subscription insights. This article will be updated when those features are available.
