What Is the Strava MCP Connector?

Learn how to connect the Strava MCP Connector so Claude can answer questions about your activities, fitness trends, and training load using live Strava data.

Written by Marie

The Strava MCP (Model Context Protocol) Connector launched on June 1, 2026, as part of the Strava subscription, built with security and quality guardrails in place. It's the supported path for athletes who want to interact with their Strava data through AI.

The Strava MCP Connector is a remote server that provides subscribers with conversational access to their activity data via AI assistants. It also provides, for the first time, access to subscription features such as training analytics outside the Strava app or website.

Athletes connect via OAuth and can ask questions in natural language about their activities, fitness trends, and training load. Answers come from live Strava data, not a static export.

FAQs

What Kinds of Questions Can I Ask With the Strava MCP?

You can ask about your training history, fitness trends, and how different training types interact. For example, you can ask which activities have improved your fitness the most, whether your easy days are actually easy enough, or how your cross-training is affecting your running.

Will This Roll Out to Other AI Clients?

We're launching with Anthropic (Claude) and looking to support other AI clients in the future.

Is the Strava MCP Connector a Subscriber Feature?

Yes. Only Strava subscribers have access to the MCP. Access is included as part of the following subscriptions:

If your subscription is on trial, you will not have access until it converts to a paid subscription.

Can I Use the MCP to Upload or Edit Activities, or Is It Read-Only?

The MCP is read-only. It cannot upload or edit activities.

Are the MCP and My Data Secure?

The Strava MCP is built by Strava and was designed with security and quality guardrails. As always, your data stays yours. The MCP connector provides read-only access scoped to your account and is revocable at any time in Strava settings.

You can learn more about Claude's security and privacy here.

How Is This Different From Exporting My Data and Uploading It Into Claude?

The Strava MCP connects live to your data, so Claude can read it as it changes and use it throughout the conversation. Exporting your data and uploading it to Claude only gives Claude a snapshot of your data at one point in time.

Why Did Claude Give Me a Different Answer Than What I See in the Strava App?

AI clients process information differently, which can lead to insights and responses that differ from what you see on Strava, such as Performance Predictions or your Runna training plan.

Are There Any Limitations in How I Can Use the MCP?

The MCP can currently be used for activity history, fitness trends, readiness, goal planning, cross-sport training, and gear. We'll be adding more functionality in the future.

There is also a limit to how many requests you can make per minute and per day.
