Strava includes public photos on both saved and suggested routes across all sport types to help members of the Strava community better understand the route they plan to take.
They will also be visible on your maps page on the Strava website. These photos can provide more information about recent trail conditions, viewpoints, tree coverage, and more, ultimately helping Strava users better understand whether a route meets their needs and draw inspiration as they plan their next adventure.
How It Works
Strava subscribers can view photos on their saved routes, in the Strava community routes, and on the maps page at Strava.com.
On the mobile app, open the Maps tab from the bottom navigation menu and select the icon to the right of the search bar to view your saved routes. Select Routes at the top of the screen to browse or generate Strava community routes.
On the Strava website, you can access the community photos by opening your Maps page from the navigation bar at the top of your screen.
Tap on the relevant route to view associated photos. Scroll through the photos and tap a photo to view it in full screen and see more details about when it was taken. To turn off community photos, click the layers icon at the bottom left of your screen and toggle Community Photos off.
Opting in or out of Community Photo Usage
You can control whether you'd like to make your photos available to the community (subject to your privacy controls, see below) by following these steps on the Strava mobile app. Any changes to this setting will apply to all photos you've previously uploaded to Strava and to all photos you upload going forward.
Open your Settings by tapping on the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner of the You tab and selecting Privacy Controls.
Tap Public Photos on Routes.
Choose whether or not to allow Strava to use photos on routes.
Which Photos Are Shared With the Community?
If you've opted in, photos that meet all of the following criteria may appear on public routes:
Your profile page privacy controls are set to 'Everyone'.
The corresponding activity's privacy controls are set to 'Everyone'.
The photo was not taken in an area of the map that you've hidden using our "hide specific address" setting.
Please be aware that selected photos will not be associated with or linked to the photo uploader's account or activity on the route page. In addition, we aim to exclude photos that contain identifiable faces or specific gear (e.g., a bike).
If you would like to exclude a photo from consideration for public photos on routes or remove one of your photos from a public route, you may do so by:
Adjusting the privacy controls on the activity associated with the photo or your profile.
Deleting the photo from your activity.
Opting out of Public photos on routes.
Providing Feedback on Route Photos
Please indicate whether or not the photo was helpful to you using the thumbs up or thumbs down icon at the bottom of the photo. This helps us determine which photos are most useful to the community, so we can improve the feature.
