Surface Types

We use OpenStreetMaps and the tags associated with each surface to display the surface types you see within our products. The trails, roads, and paths are defined below:

  • Solid white (road): paved road.
  • Dashed white (road-paths): footpaths, for pedestrians but not specifically tagged for hiking or trail.
  • Dashed pink (road-trail): hiking/trail/bridleway.
  • Solid pink (road-track): a “track” in OpenStreetMap, generally meaning bikes or even vehicles may be allowed but likely still unpaved or otherwise not part of the paved road network.
