Strava Verified Segments

What are Verified Segments?

Strava is full of segments created by our users. Verified segments help highlight the iconic stretches of road and trail where the community competes. Strava inspects segments from our segments database, identifies which are the most representative of the road or trail, and verifies them. This feature aims to reduce confusion and improve the accuracy of the world's most popular segments.

How do we Pick Verified Segments?

Verified segments are chosen based on their popularity on Strava. We use a blend of matched activities, leaderboard views, goals, “stars,” and other technical factors related to the segment geometry.

Whenever possible, we work with local experts and event organizers to ensure verified segments' start and end points are in the correct location. We also inspect every segment section to ensure it follows the proper track. Segments are based on GPS data from activities, so we're looking for segments that accurately match the underlying road or trail.

What happens when we verify a segment?

When we identify a segment for verification, we take a few steps to ensure it is most useful for the community in the future.

    1. We use our elevation dataset to ensure accuracy. Data from uploaded activities also increases the accuracy of the segment's elevation data, helping everyone get a correct picture of the segment's elevation profile.
    2. We align the segment to the basemap to ensure accuracy. This helps ensure that activities that follow the segment's track match the segment.
    3. We move the segment to a Strava Admin account to ensure it isn't edited or deleted.

If a segment you created becomes verified, it will no longer appear in the "Created Segments" tab of your My Segments page on the Strava website. Strava Admin becomes the owner and administrator of the segment to preserve it for future use by the Strava community. If you notice this has happened with a segment you created, we sincerely appreciate you making a segment for the community!
